Red: The area around where the tonsils used to be may look beefy red. There may also be red spots on the soft palate. The appearance does not help one identify strep vs virus.

my daughter was diagnosed with the croup this morning. now i have white spot on left tonsil, is it adult croup or strep throat? should i see a dr?

Hard to say:  The actual adult equivalent of croup is voice loss/laryngitis. A white spot on a tonsil is not specific to a particular illness and could be a benign tonsil stone. If you have no fever or sore throat I would ignore it.

i have strep throat at least three times a year plus many sore throats. the er doctors say i should have my tonsils removed, is it safe as an adult?

Tonsillectomy in adu: Tonsillectomies in adults have about the same amount of bleeding as the children. They are definitely more painful.  You will lose a minimum of 8 to ten pounds.   Biggest problem post op is the pain. You will need to be medicated in order to get through the pain.  Good luck!  feel better.

Absolutely: Streptococcal pharyngitis is not dependent on the presence or absence of tonsils, so the answer is yes! a simple swab will confirm your diagnosis in a few minutes, and you can immediately start appropriate therapy. Good luck.

Essentially the same: Strep throat is strep throat--a bacterial infection due to exposure to a specific germ called streptococcus. Headache, sore throat, red throat, swollen lymph nodes of the neck, nausea, vomiting, generalized achiness or malaise, even a fine sandpapery red rash known as scarletina can occur whether one has tonsils or not. Admittedly the chance of strep throat seems less after tonsillectectomy.

Yes: The tonsils and adenoids represent large collections of gland tissue that are often involved with strep infections. After removal of most of those structures there will still be other glandular tissue present that can become infected with strep.

Yes: Although removing the tonsils may decrease the frequency of strep throat, it is still possible to become infected with strep without tonsils.

Highly unlikely: Highly unlikely. I've had a patient who developed not only tonsillitis but an abscess after a previous tonsillectomy. It happens if residual tonsil tissue remains after the tonsillectomy.

should i get my tonsils out if i keep getting strep throat?

Accepted Answer

Yes: If recurrent cultures of the tonsils, when infected, demonstrate streptococcus and you are significantly ill and it occurs 3 to 4 times a year,  you should have a tonsillectomy.  Rarely, but definitely, the recurrence of true strep tonsillitis may lead to heart or kidney disease.  I believe this rare but potential danger should motivate you to have surgery on the tonsils.

Hard to say: I wouldn't think about a "look" of strep in the throat.  It can be hard to predict sometimes by looking.  Instead, if a child has a sore throat with a fever in the absence of cold symptoms like cough and runny nose, they should be checked for strep.  Whether or not they have tonsils, they can also have headache, abdominal pain, vomiting and/or rashes.
