Verification Code Scam?

I recently got a message supposedly from Plenty of Fish with a verification code. I didn’t even know what plenty of fish was and looked it up; a dating website. Is someone on the website using my number? Or is it someone just trying to get my to reply to that message?

If you are looking to get a phone number for POF creating account

Use DatingZest POF service to bypass POF phone verification, it works great.

It's someone trying to scam u, don't reply to it, don't click any links

Figured. I just hope no one on that website has been using my number :/. I just completely ignored it hoping they won’t text again. Thanks!

Hey iLoveViewers, it's possible someone has entered your number to try and verify a Plenty of Fish account, but numbers are not stored on our platform or associated with any accounts and without the code you were texted that person won't be able to create an account. No cause for worry here!

Good to hear. Thank you!

Pof is location based right? It uses your location to find matches. So one would think if it used a phone number in another location for their verification then they could use your location for there location.

Pretty sure this happened because someone used to have that phone number when they created their account. Then they got a new phone/sim card/phone number but didn't update their account with the new number. Now, after waiting a length of time (long enough that the phone number has been re-issued to someone new) the 2-factor verification check is being sent to their original phone number that they no longer have. It's a good reminder to update your new phone number on all of your accounts (banking, etc.) that send verification codes, otherwise you'll no longer have access to them.

Nah, it's a real scam.

I’ve been trying to get into my pof It said I changed my password which I haven’t done. I continued and set new password but then it says it will send a sms to my phone number which the last 2 numbers is not my phone number I have had my only phone number for 20 years and it ends with 28 not 90 please get back to me as I have a feeling I’ve been hacked you can email me on. tess__louis@hotmail.com

Yeah... someone got you to give them the code, and then they own your account now :/.

Can't you just make a fresh new account if they get yours through this scam though? If so what's the point of the scam and what's the harm in it other than having to block some incoming texts or something?.. I just don't really get it, like the point 🤷🤦

yea, but like Moonsfishsammy said, they own your account and will have access to your other personal information. Think about that for a second .... I had been corresponding with a lady on another dating site, not POF, she seemed suspicious; She only had my phone number; this was two months ago when I reluctantly gave it to her; Just now she messaged me on Whatsapp and asked to use my number for POF verification; I told her no, and that I'm not getting involved; I googled POF telephone number scams and it brought me right here in Reddit. Now, I'm convinced the Scammer is hard at work trying to get into my pocket. Be careful folks.

I havent send anything but shes presuring so i told her im in no rush you csn find someone else

Never give someone an access code. All that code does is to verify that it’s you and will get into an account.

u/iLoveViewers avatar

Anyone that has/ ask for your number, then says oh can I just have the verification code, immediately block/ report them. They are trying to get into your account by using your phone number to login. So an app will send an access code to make sure it’s you. Scammers do this all the time by tricking people into thinking the code does nothing.

Just woke up with this exact thing happening to me. Wild that it's been going on for 3+ years. I had no idea what POF was until today, and this post was very reassuring. I thought I'd been hacked.

Welcome .^

So I just got a text of a verification code on POF, but I never had an account with them.

Yes I occasionally get them myself. I just delete the messages and don’t even open them.
