Check Bank Balance Online Without Going To The Bank?

In the era of the digital world, the advancements of technology have led to various operations which required time and effort – an easy task.  For example, the financial and banking operations can be done without visiting the bank. There are many things you can do like transferring money, checking account balance, depositing money and other such tasks at the click of a button. With so many transactions we are doing daily we need to keep a track of your bank balance. A habit of checking balance keeps a person informed about errors or frauds right away.

There are many ways by which a person can check account balance. It can be through email, push notification, SMS, net banking, UPI and others. Below are some of the common ways listed which will help you in knowing how to check bank balance.

Things which are necessary for checking account balance

Before going into the details here are some of the things required for checking your account balance:-

  1. Registered bank account
  2. Registered mobile number
  3. Net banking account for people wanting to check their balance on the bank’s website

Eight easy steps for checking account balance

1. Login Online (Net Banking)

One can easily check their bank account balance anytime through this method. For getting started, one is required to navigate to the bank’s official website and enter the information required. One can use a bank’s mobile app. For most of the apps, one needs to look for options such as “Account Access” or “Login”. If this is your first visit to the app or website, you will need to register by clicking on “The first-time User.”

For registering follow the process below:-

  • Step 1: Enter your account number, registered mobile number, registered email address, debit card number and CVV number. Click on submit. An OTP will be generated.
  • Step 2: After entering the OTP which is sent to your registered mobile number, enter the username (new) and password. The account is created.

Next you need to check the balance, just enter your username and password. Apart from checking bank balances online, one can also transfer money to various banks, pay different bills and others.

2. Text Messages for balance checking

Another convenient way of checking your balance is through SMS. If you have checked the option for SMS alerts while filling up the bank account while creating a new account, then for every transaction you will automatically get balance updates along with the amount credited or debited. You don’t have to do anything extra like entering passwords or usernames. If you have not checked the option, visit the bank branch, ask for an SMS option and then fill up a form at the branch to get updates.

You can also check your balance using the registered mobile number by sending an SMS to the bank’s number. The number is different for different banks. The list of numbers and the format of SMS is mentioned below in this article. If this option is enabled you’ll get quick balance updates.

3. Use an ATM

One can also use ATMs to find out about the account balance. You just need to go to any ATM and follow the steps below:-

  • Enter your card
  • Enter the PIN (a 4 digit code)
  • Select the balance inquiry option

The balance would be shown. The process for the ATMs is more or less the same. But it depends on that specific bank’s ATM. It is advised to use your bank’s ATM as using another ATM can cost you some charges. If you are checking through a foreign bank’s ATM, it might cost you an additional fee.

4. Call the Bank

For those you are not comfortable with, the above approaches can call up the bank to know the balance. But unlike the above options where you can check your balance anytime, this process cannot be done 24/7 if the bank’s system is not automated. Nowadays it is basically automated. You will be asked to enter certain information like bank account details and others, then they will let you know the balance immediately.  The list of numbers for different banks is given below.

5. Setting up Alerts

If you don’t want to check your account balance every time, you can just ask the bank for a message which is sent to you whenever your bank account has a low balance. For any big withdrawal or low balance, you will be alerted by your bank immediately. For such alerts, you can customize the amount and other things while setting up alerts.

6. Talking to a Teller

If nothing is working for you, you can call up the bank and speak up to a person if your bank has a brick-and-mortar bank with local branches. It is different from the fourth option mentioned above as by talking to a teller you actually talk to a person as compared to automated calls.

Every bank has a specific number which you can call up and talk to the teller. But unfortunately, it is getting difficult to have access to tellers. As most of the banks have shifted to online processes they are less likely to hire tellers. Plus they will charge you extra fees for calling up a teller. But tellers do tell the bank balance in exchange for some information.

7. UPI and other banking apps

The most convenient and easiest way to check balance nowadays is through UPI and other banking apps. If you have various bank accounts and don’t want to install so many apps then you can just install a UPI app.

Follow the below process for checking bank balance with UPI

For the first time:-

  • Step 1: Install any UPI app.
  • Step 2: Ensure the mobile device having the UPI app must have the registered mobile number sim in it which is active and has enough balance for sending an SMS.
  • Step 3: Open the app it will ask you to choose the bank name with which you have a bank account and the registered mobile number in case the phone device has a dual sim.
  • Step 4: The registration process begins. The app will automatically send an SMS and verify your number.
  • Step 5: After successful verification, the UPI will ask you to create a UPI pin (not the same as an ATM card pin) and will give you a UPI id.
  • Step 6: Enter 4 digits as per your wish. The registration process is complete.

Note: If you have already created a UPI ID with a particular app then use the same id across all such UPI apps. Some apps also ask you to provide an email address. The email address may not be the same as the registered email address, it can be different.

For checking balance:-

Just open the UPI app and click on ‘check account balance’. Enter the UPI pin and the balance will be displayed automatically. There is no charge for checking the balance through UPI.

8. Missed call

You can check account balance if you make a miss call with their registered mobile numbers. But for getting miss call balance updates the following are required.

  1. Registered mobile number – To check account balance you only require a registered mobile number. The bank will only send balance updates if your number is registered with them. The number should be active for giving a missed call and for receiving SMS to check account balance. This facility should be active with your bank.

What is Available Balance

As one checks their bank balance, one should check which type of balance they are checking. When one uses the bank’s app or any online process, one should note that the banks show the balance available which generally tells how much a person can withdraw or spend that day. Generally, the available balance is less than or can be greater than that shown. It is not that the bank is showing the wrong balance but rather it doesn’t show the pending transactions. The upcoming bill payments or the deposits might not have cleared by that time.
