Miles and More is a total rip off there customer service center in California is staffed by nothing but idiots and assholes one in particular is Monica. She is supposed to be a supervisor and is a total b***h and idiot.
The scam is they make you use 50K miles to upgrade and they will not confirm the upgrade until you have purchased the ticket. So they can tel you they have the upgrade space and then you buy the ticket and have to cal back to the M & M service center to find out there is no upgrade and no refund on your ticket.
British Airways is much better only 25K to upgrade and confirmed at time of booking.
If anyone at Lufthansa reads this fire that IDIOT Monica.

Lufthansa lost in court - devaluation of Miles behind member's backs

Lufthansa devaluated the value of their members miles without informing them. One of their premium customers, a guy who had over 80 flights within a year took them to court (in Germany) and he won.
There is a law firm in Munich which is working on a class action (which I already joined):

Elite is Great

I have friends who because of business travel are in Elite status on FF programs. These folks pay no baggage fees, get practically unlimited upgrades, and lots of free flights. The people who are not in Elite status get virtually nothing as pointed out by the above letter. I used to play along - fly the airlines where I could collect points, give up my seat for a "free" ticket, and occasionally find a free seat for miles. The available seats are few and far between and virtually never on any flights to anyplace anybody would like to go - Hawaii, Orlando, etc. I therefore book seats only on Hawaiian and Southwest where customer service is great and have dropped everybody else -AA, United, Delta, Northwest etc. I never give up my seat . It only benefits the airline and keeps them from paying an involuntary fee to someone they have to bump because they oversold the flight. Thank God for SWA and Hawaiian. I could care less what they charge. I'm with them for life. If SWA doesn't go where I'm going I get as close as I can with them and drive the rest of the way. People should reward the carrier that provides excellent customer service and doesn't charge ridiculous fees. To heck with FF Mile programs.

Miles & More admitted to me that its like a lottery game to get an upgrade

You are right, most of the frequent flyer programs are scams since they are not regulated. these guys want to make you believe that you have "earned something" but in reality you don't have any rights to get what they promise for their miles. In order to get an upgrade they expect you to pay full fare for your initial booking. On their website they would never reveal the booking class, you will only know later and that is one of their favorite excuses: "this booking class was not upgradable". If the booking class was actually upradable than it is "the upgradable seats on the plane were already taken, we can't tell in advance how many seats are available for an upgrade..."
Their marketing managers have nothing else to do than to invent these games, they are professionals who get paid for designing strategies to cheat "customers". Remember: they make the rules, not you and their primary interest is not the happy passenger but their profit.
I have had the experience that Miles & More in Santa Clarita told me something new, each time I talked to a different rep. Lufthansa does not stand behind the information that they give over the phone and not even behind the information that is given on their website.
the lesson that I have learned from these guys is that i will stop flying with them, their Miles & More program is supposed to tie passengers to Star Alliance and for the last years I stricly flew with Star Alliance partners. After my decision not to use them anymore I found that there are still airlines that treat me like a customer and that appreciate my business, like Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest, Air France, KLM... Now I am free to choose the best schedule, the best connection, the best price.
I am wondering how many customers have already been pissed off by Miles & More instead of being made "loyal customers"... '
