What Are Examples of Authoritarian Governments?
Some examples of authoritarian governments include the regimes in China, Myanmar, Cuba and Iran. In an authoritarian political system, control is held by a single ruler or small group. Authoritarian governments do not permit freedom of speech and look to control every aspect of the daily lives of their citizens.
Although authoritarian governments do not allow citizens to have any say in how the country is ruled, on some occasions, elections can be held to justify a continued hold on power. However, these elections are far from free, and the result is almost always predetermined. The regime of Mao Zedong and his Cultural Revolution is perhaps the most extreme example of an authoritarian government in action.
