      1. Not all speak English today, but the Philippines was under US control from the end of Spanish American war until 1959. During that time, all children were taught American History and English in school. Prior to that,
Spanish was the language used for all business. Of course, Tagalog and one’s dialect would be spoken in the home. My mother was born in 1919 and spoke and wrote impeccable English. It wasn’t until I had left home and after several years that I realized that Mom had a slight accent.
The very next generation to now, they didnt have to learn English in this manner, are heavily accented and not as proficient.

      2. A couple of centuries ago, America was at war with Spain. Spain, at that time ruled over the Philippines, but that came to an end when (as part of the American/Spanish war) the Americans decided to invade the Spanish held Philippines. The Philippine people fought alongside the Americans, against the oppressive rule of the Spanish, who lost, and were kicked out. The Philippine people believed they were going to be freed from foreign rule, but their hopes were dashed when the Americans refused to leave, and colonised the Philippines in place of the spanish, which led to civil/guerilla war for several years. However, the Americans were less oppressive than the Spanish, and also brought in what was then the best education system in Asia. The Spanish ruled for around 500 years before the Americans took over, then after about 200 years, autonomy (self rule) was at last Granted to the Philippine people.

        1. Majority of your information is incorrect. Suggest that you check legitimate history books.
Basically the Spanish were there about 375 years. The Filipinos revolted after this period and actually declared independence in 1896. Unfortunately as the Philippines was not recognized as an independent country by the rest of the world, after defeat in the American-Spanish war in 1898, Spain ceded the Philippines (which was no longer theirs to give) as part of the settlement to the Americans under the Treaty of Paris.

Here you go, taken from the history page of this site.
Spain’s rule of the Philippines began soon after the explorer Ferdinand Magellan discovered the islands in 1521.

The Spanish conquistadores reigned for nearly 400 years until 1898 when the United States defeated Spain in the Spanish-American War. As a result of the Treaty of Paris, Spain surrendered the Philippines, marking the end of Spanish colonial rule and the beginning of American control.

American rule was interrupted briefly during World War II when the Japanese occupied the islands from 1941 to 1945. After the war ended, the United States granted the Philippines independence on July 4, 1946, ending nearly 50 years of American government.

          1. Amanda again. Sorry have to correct something. In 1898, Admiral Dewey of the US did attack the Spanish in the Battle of Manila Bay. The Spaniards in the Philippines did not even know that Spain was at war with the US. Dewey won that battle but the formal turnover of the Philippines to the US was thru the Treaty of Paris.
