"Tribute to Jasmine Lau and other great hospital administrators"

Managing and running a multispecialty tertiary care medical centre is no easy task. Dealing with administrative, clinical and corporate issues requires one to wear many hats, and to be proactive in identifying possible challenges.

Jasmine Lau (left in main image) is that kind of individual. The chief executive officer of Bukit Tinggi Medical Centre (BTMC) in Klang, Selangor, was able to feel the pulse of the institution through her walkabouts, interacting with the staff at various levels, consultants, and patients. At a time when many hospitals are facing an acute shortage of staff, she was able to turn things around by resolving the factors that led to these shortages, so much so that we had staff coming in from other medical centres, and our former staff seeking to rejoin us.

Her close relationship with community leaders created avenues for initiating projects that benefited the people at large. She gave her full support to the ‘Gift of Sight’ project, which we have managed to run successfully, with BTMC picking up the Malaysia Health and Wellness Award 2023, under the CSR category for the community project.

It has been a great journey with Lau. There were occasional setbacks, as there are in real life, but these hurdles were quickly pushed aside thanks to good communication, commitment, and execution.

But, as with every journey, we all come to a crossroads where we have to decide which new road we should continue our journey on, to reach the destination. It may involve leaving your company. The road may be smooth, or there may be hazards, but I am sure Lau, who will be leaving BTMC, will travel the road, overcoming hurdles and hazards, to chart a safe and sound path to reach her destination.

Who knows, our paths may cross in the future. Till then, I pray and wish her all the best on her new journey.

This is all about our progress in this journey called life. We all have dreams and aspirations, but it is important to remember that life’s journey isn’t just a straight line from point A to point B. There will be twists, turns, ups, and downs. But if we stay true to ourselves and our dreams, we will eventually reach our destination.

All the best Lau!
