Food stamps: How to know if your state will give more money in May

Are you getting extra EBT money this month?

Food stamps: How to know if your state will give more money in May
Actualizado

Emergency allotments were authorized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to help SNAP households meet temporary food needs during the pandemic, according to the US Department of Agriculture. EA amounts are calculated by subtracting the maximum benefit for the household size from the monthly base benefit.

All SNAP households that receive less than the maximum benefit can receive emergency allotments from state SNAP agencies on a month-to-month basis. Households on or near the maximum SNAP benefit, on the other hand, receive little or no additional assistance.

States may choose to continue providing monthly emergency allotments as long as a national public health emergency, or PHE, is in effect - and the state has declared an emergency at the state level.

U.S. Secretary Xavier Becerra of the Department of Health and Human Services has extended the COVID-19 federal public health emergency until April 16. A PHE declaration is valid for 90 days or until the secretary declares that the PHE is no longer valid. On July 15, the current PHE will expire.

What states are getting additional EA SNAP benefits?

In states where these benefits are available, all households will receive emergency allotments of at least $95. Households receiving $95 or more will receive the same amount in the future. Supplemental EA SNAP benefits will be issued in the form of state EBT cards, which can be used to buy eligible foods at authorized locations.

The USDA has granted waivers to the following states through the end of May 2022:

  • The District of Columbia
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Wisconsin

What are the SNAP benefits for other states?

While eligibility requirements and benefit levels are consistent across all states except Alaska and Hawaii, the way benefits are calculated can differ significantly from one state to the next, according to the US Census Bureau.

According to the most recent data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, here is an alphabetical list of each state's SNAP participation rate.
