Ireland women chanting "up the Ra" in celebration of WC qualification
Interesting looking at these comments and seeing the difference on the Irish subreddit
They probably think it’s an innocent chant, try telling that to the family of someone blown to pieces by the cowardly terrorists.
Try saying that to the millions of people unionists have killed for the sake of taking our land
But what about insert Protestant massacre
But what about insert Catholic massacre
But what about insert Protestant massacre
But what about insert Catholic massacre
This tit for tat argument is pointless. Join the 21st century ffs.
[removed]
Lol that sure works out a lot more for one side than the other.
Your land? I was born here maybe it’s my kind too
Millions? AHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAH you fucking moron
How many people died from the English monarchy refusing to actually give us aid from the monarchys of other country's cause it made them look bad for a start, the Labour for food basically working the weak and sick to death to get enough food to subsist long enough to build they're roads. This Is two items of the longest list on the fucking planet, eg how the English screwed over the Irish people
Unless you are illiterate you have no excuse for your stupendous fucking ignorance.
The IRA refers to the people who fought for Irish freedom, you are referring to the provisional Ira
Why can't they just not do that?
I would rather have tit-for-tat song singing than blowing each other up again. At least now with everyone recording it's out there for every one to shame them.
Because idiots are, well, idiots.
If you think this is bad wait until you hear the song they sang before the match
What was that?
Amhran na bhFiann
That’s the Irish National Anthem - A Soldier’s Song. What do you expect an Irish team to sing?
Would Come out ye black and tans be better?
Tbh yeah
Because it is an absolutely quality chant/slogan. Catchy as fuck.
Why can’t people just not light bonfires?
Are the NI team lighting bonfires on the pitch?
Ayebutwhattabout
That is my mantra.
Edit: glad to see this is not true, upset that someone went out of their way to mock this up!
Second edit: my mantra is not ‘up the ra’ and never has been, my mantra is ‘why can’t they just not do that?’
Loooool their manager admitted guilt
Oh dear!
Would be more than happy to find out the one I posted is fake, but from the link above it's two different clips? I'd like to see the "original" of the same clip
My mantra is also ‘why can’t they just not do that’ about any kind of stupidity, closely followed by ‘pffff… oh for fucks’ sake’
TrucksNShit, I completely agree. It's disheartening tbh.
Surely it's easier not to sing this craic? They represent Ireland and in turn this behaviour taints us all, enjoy your victory - don't be a cunt about it.
Yeah they went from being heroes to an embarrassment.
This was a very dumb thing for them to do
I'm happy to see that all of these ignorant comments are heavily downvoted but the sheer amount of them is truly disappointing. The replies to every comment are just people making excuses. We didn't accept those excuses when the Orange Order video got released and we shouldn't now.
How many of these ladies experienced the troubles I wonder? How many witnessed the aftermath of bombings like Claudy, Omagh or Enniskillen? How many experienced the loss of a relative due to violence like the families of Jean McConville or Lyra McKee or faced IRA "justice" such as a beating or kneecapping for a crime they didn't commit? There is no way to justify this as it comes from a place of pure ignorance.
The peace process has done a wonderful job in transformation NI into a place where you wouldn't know that less than 30 years ago we were still at each others throats but unfortunately this means that young people today have a warped view of the conflict as they didn't experience the suffering brought about by the troubles first hand.
It's important that we commemorate and celebrate peace but in doing so we must remember the violence that preceeded it and respect and acknowledge that people have very legitimate experiences stemming from that violence because if we can't comprehend the perspectives of those on the other side of the divide we'll never be able to tear it down.
Most of them probably born after the GFA and obviously don't realise how fragile the whole thing actually is.
Is Celtic Symphony really comparable to the (untitled) Michaela McAreavey song? One is a mainstream published and played song, whereas the other only seems to exist in the folk memory of drunken Orangemen.
Whenever you try to say "Is this sectarian thing less bad than that sectarian thing" just take a beat and realise its all wrong and that's all that needs to be said.
See the comment I replied to who made the comparison initially.
I don’t think all things are reciprocal.
It’s far worse actually. It clearly glorifies a mass murdering terrorists association. An organisation who murdered and maimed 10s of thousands of innocent Irish civilians. The fact republicans can see no issues with this open support for a human rights abusing terrorist group is even worse again
And any Republican would say the same about the RUC and British state forces.
At a certain point it has to be accepted that radically different opinions of the past exist, and living peacefully means not losing the rag when someone shares a different view of the IRA.
I don't agree with alot the IRA done but without their resistance against british oppression catholics would still be getting treated like 2nd class citizens in their own country.
Sure, but the RA's resistance shouldn't have included gunning down innocent people as a policy. Bit hard to be considered virtuous doing that.
The people who lead the NI Civil Rights movement don't believe this so why do you? Why support the militants who explicitly fought for reunification rather than the humanitarians who explicitly fought for equality?
Well said.
Idiot children. Peace dividend babies who have no fucking clue.
The impact of the troubles needs to be taught as graphically as possible.
Lose a few family members or have a drying man, with a family, crying in your arms as half his organs are about to fail due to concussive damage and laceration and you would fucking change your tune.
The awesome thing about this thread is it exposes the knuckle dragging mouthbreathers with double standards on bigotry and sectarianism so you can easily block them and live a better life
Indeed.
The Provo fan boys on here claiming the IRA can not be classed as Sectarian as they didn't target people because of their religion. Yeah, basically my chauvinism is better than your chauvinism. It's infuriating.
But thats one of the funniest things about this sub for me, you get to see how hypocritical people are and then after doing a quick search on their comment history can shove their stupidity right in their faces! 🤣
I'd also like to say, people are saying "stupid young people" as if these young people didn't learn this from their parents who were likely involved in the troubles. These biased views come from BEFORE and DURING the troubles, not after, so these kids learned this from their sectarian parents. Someone somewhere needs to break the tie.
A decent number of them aren’t Irish, they’re English, Scottish, American, even Canadian, with enough heritage to be eligible when their home country doesn’t call them up. Their parents probably didn’t experience shit, and these heritage players probably have no idea what they’re chanting or its significance. Chances are their teammates taught them it, and they get to effectively cosplay being super Irish without understanding what they’re doing. It really is just dumb, at least where those players are concerned, you think they’d have bothered to check
The video won't load for me so I had assumed considering this was posted in a Northern Irish sub that it was Northern Irish people.
Lol I was assuming this was a womens football sub. I do forget r/northernireland is constantly on the front page. It's the republic of ireland womens football team, celebrating after beating scotland to qualify for the world cup for the first time. Absolute shame.
Oh, I see. Strange reaction from them then. Thanks for letting me know.
I'd love these edgy kids to sit down for a conversation with someone who worked in the security services in the 80s or 90s while they describe what it's like to clear up after a car bomb, lifting body parts, calling at a front door to tell someone their loved one is dead
glorifying murder isn't edgy or cool, it just shows your ignorance
Fairly sure anyone working in the prison service still has to.
[removed]
This narrative propagated by Britain that the security services helplessly stood by like some innocent onlookers while so much damage was done shows such a lack of respect to their victims.
The reality of the matter is, those security services started the whole thing, they participated in and aggravated it and then they threw their hands up and said “oh no, what are they doing!”.
They’re the last people who should be getting the chance to sit down and discuss their strife with anyone
[removed]
They’re the last people who should be getting the chance to sit down and discuss their strife with anyone
I mean, or the first. Maybe everyone involved should just sit down together, talk through their experiences, allow the truth to come out, say sorry, have a big old hug and then try to build a better world.
What, you mean like a truth and reconciliation commission?
Anyway, getting back to the point, the FAI have done the right thing here. There may be further action, but I think you can be sure that this is the last time they'll sing that.
Working in the British Army or the Royal Ulster Constabulary is sure as shit not something to be lauded, Jesus Christ.
I think they they are glorifying resistance to state sponsored terrorism and British imperialism.
Wanna know a fun fact. My mates dad / grandad (cant remember which) was murdered by the IRA for not wanting to join. He was an irishman. Regardless of your thoughts on the whole war - you need to know the IRA were not angels and dont deserve praise. They used the same tactics ISIS and other terrorist groups in the middle east use. Do you support their violence? Even though they're fighting against similar things the IRA was?
You need to learn to think better
For all you know some of their relatives were murdered by soldiers, or state sponsored terrorists. Probably had their doors kicked in and their toilets smashed in the middle of the night by RUC men in balaclavas.
And for all you know they weren't and are just the product of the same bitterness we complain about from the loyalists but it's ok if we do it because poor us right? No better than Bryson.
People were murdered on both sides. It's time to get over this shit
It's okay of you support terrorism as long as its conducted by the British state, didn't you know that?
pre match: hold a moment's silence for 10 people killed by an explosion
post match: celebrate by chanting songs glorifying a terrorist group that blew people up
🤦🤦🤦
There's two IRA groups tho? One is full of psychopaths and the other was a group who freed a country from hundreds of years of oppression, which one are they chanting about?
Since they’ve now apologised I think we can conclude that this is legit. It’s depressing tbh, they should be celebrating and now they’re eating humble pie because they’ve been stupid.
Whiskeyjack? A man of culture I see. Light a candle for Beak
Don’t go there! There’s still a scab from Beak. And Coltaine…
Just started my re-read. Finished gotm yesterday so chain of dogs here we come. Coltaines gonna break my heart all over again
I just got goosebumps for you. By the time I got to the end of GOTM I was on board, but Deadhouse Gates sealed it. Heartbreakingly fantastic. I’m probably gonna start (another) reread soon. Enjoy mate
Fucking idiots. Why do young people think is in any way cool. It's cringe.
Bigotry
You can't tell the difference between genuine bigotry and some girls looking to sing a song that they all know the words to. See the extensive and genuine apologies that they've been issuing all day today.
Next time someone is singing about Fenian blood Jill just take it that they know the song, gotcha
That's a false equivalency and this sub seems to be incredibly ignorant. 26 counties gained independence because of the war the old IRA fought against the British state. It's not the same as murdering of civilian 'fenians'.
Not acceptable behaviour at all, they have rightly been called out on it and have taken the shine right off their team accomplishment.
Not cool. Very disappointed. They are supposed to be role models for young kids.
Definitely tainted what should be a welcome achievement to many.
It'll be interesting to see the fall out, if any, especially in comparison to recent issues the IFA had with Lafferty etc.
There will be no fall out...likely just ignored because it's the womans game
[removed]
Lafferty looked quite drunk in his video.
These girls are supposed to be celebrating and they actually think the best thing to do is sing a IRA song. Provo loving is out of control, people really think there are no consequences for celebrating this kind of thing.
‘Provo loving’ 😂😂😂
It's a Celtic song. Though the graffiti in Glasgow says ooh Aah up the ra. Just like our murals say UVF.
A celtic song that praises the IRA.
This has nothing to do with the Provos.
Fucking hell.
Absolute MORONS
Every time a somewhat public figure sings this song, it sets back any prospect of Irish unification or communal reconciliation by a month. (And before the whataboutery starts the same is true vice-versa for the loyalist side of things)
No skin off my teeth of course, but you’d think they’d learn by now.
Very embarrassing and disappointing behaviour and appropriately called out. Stupid people
That escalated quickly lol
A fantastic display of stupidity and bigotry.
I’m from the ROI and I’m so embarrassed by this behaviour. When I was younger it was normal to sing this and no one would bat an eye. I’ve since lived to the UK (Scotland) and I’ve had my eyes opened as to what is appropriate and what is not. It just wasn’t part of my upbringing.
The only positive I can see is that the backlash might help others, who see these songs as harmless, recognize that they are inappropriate and embarrassing.
Their manager has just apologised for 'any hurt' caused by players celebrations
That is admitting guilt.
Nobody can defend it now
Lot of people with egg on their face in this thread now. Handy when the dickheads expose themselves so they can be blocked along with their shitty views
Correct. I said nothing until FAI said something
I heard as clear as day what it was and the video on the girls insta was deleted overnight too.
If it wasn't IRA then why would she delete it 🙈
Going the way of Wolf Cola it seems
Wait until sky news finds out what the Irish national anthem means in english...
Fuck me it's not like they were even playing England! Not that it would make it legit, but at least you could understand. Is singing Up the RA just a default celebratory chant these days regardless? Sectarianism is clearly just part and parcel these days. Sad. Very sad.
Fuck me it's not like they were even playing England! Not that it would make it legit, but at least you could understand.
Eh? They were playing against Scotland... You know, the part of Britain that disproportionately played a role in the colonisation of Ireland?
Idiots. Here's me thinking it's fantastic to see them qualify then they go and do this.
Same. Very disappointing. I’d like to put it down to stupidity but think they’re simply showing true colors.
I haven't cringed like that for a while. Hopefully someday they'll look back on this and cringe as bad as I just did.
Disgusting
These were dark times for all concerned. The violence committed by both sides of the conflict has no place in our celebrations in 2022.
Short sighted Ill informed children.
Embarrassing. The pearl clutching going on around it is also embarrassing.
Absolute and utter morons!!! To think that everyone wants an all island team and a united peaceful Ireland and these eejits set us back!
Love the absolute mental gymnastics of all you "I don't pick a side because I'm so much better than everyone" trying to say that this is as bad as the orange order video singing about Michaela, get a life
Clearly utterly reprehensible singing a song to promote the IRA.
What baffles me is though, why do people not criticise those who sing God Save the Queen/King the same way? So much more destruction was caused by the British Monarchy yer they’re still widely glorified to this day
God Save the Queen is the British national anthem just like how the Soldier Song is the Irish National anthem. Both are completely different than singing up the ra in 2022. I seriously can't believe you're trying to make some type of comparison.
Making something official or widespread approval doesn’t make a song ok. Ámhrán na bhFiann glorifies soldiers who came from far and wide to free Ireland from tyranny and slavery. God Save the Queen eulogises an organisation that committed more oppression and terrorised people globally more than any other ever to never lose a battle.
The line God Save the Queen glorifies one terrorist organisation, the line Up the Ra glorifies another terrorist organisation
Holy shit. This is awful. Stupid silly silly girls . This ain’t ok and if they don’t know that by now, then they deserved to be punished for it severely .
Of all the songs , it’s always this , Jesus Christ .
So Kyle lafferty get shafted for something similar yet this is ok?
Needs stamped out. I'd throw them out of the comp. There is no need for a anything like this in sport. Especially at international level where you are essentially an ambassador for the country.
That’s a step too far.
I sincerely hope you were not one of those who was calling for action against anyone in a particular video taken inside an orange hall recently. If so you are a hypocrite.
Eugh, why would you do that? Not when you're representing your country.
Inappropriate celebration aside, I'm seeing a few comments about "edgy kids" and the like about my generation playing songs like that, so I wanna try and explain it for people that don't get it.
As I've said above, celebrating like this is entirely inappropriate and they should've known better. In general, however, my generation (GenZ) will have republican tunes and loyalist tunes in the same playlist and sing them regardless of our background (my group is a pretty even mix) - notable ones being Celtic Symphony, Come Out Ye Black and Tans (Welshy remix) and The Sash (Bouncy Remix)
It's not about being edgy or "loyalists bad"/"republicans bad". It really is just down to the fact the songs kinda slap. Different perspectives on the songs because we didn't live through The Troubles (ultimately a good thing, no?). There is a line though and the team crossed it. In situations like that you absolutely need to be sensitive to how others will perceive it and feel about it.
"they were just singing any old song that was on their playlist, i promise! they could have just as easily been singing the sash!"
youre fooling no one
that's not the point they're making, what they're saying is people love Celtic Symphony because it's a thumper, not because it's sectarian. same reason anyone would stick on the sash bouncy remix, because it goes hard
imagine an orangeman trying to justify the Michaela McAreavey song by saying it's a banger
disgusting, both of you
Disappointingly predictable. Hope they throw the book at them.
Disappointing to see honestly, and in full view for all their fans and supporters. One can only wonder what exactly they get up to behind closed doors if this is what we see in broad daylight.
Here we go again
We’re on the road again
Oh ah paul mcgrath?... singing oh ah paul mcgrath.
The whole of Ireland, north and south , is shocked and saddened by the shocking deaths and destruction in cresslough, but these twats start singing about a group that killed innocents every other day. Absolute stupid ballbags.
I suspect we'll not see any media coverage of this and it will be all brushed under the carpet since it's the womans team.
Fuck don't say that pan will be accusing you of something you didn't imply
FAI literally released a statement.
Vile.
These young wans, especially freestaters, with their IRA revisionist nonsense is very annoying and extremely cringe, and I say that as a northern Sinn Fein supporter. There wouldn't be a hope in hell the national team would have done that during the troubles, it would be unthinkable, for obvious reasons, but obviously assholes today don't really seem to think. They have just put any notion of an all-Ireland team back decades, but they obviously don't care about that, they probably all think we are all nordie unionists, ignorant of the fact that the RA they are taking great pleasure in ohh-ahhing were prodominantly made up of nordies. Stupid bitches!

I often watch a youtube channel called Off the Ball from down south,I wasn't very surprised that those commenting generally either supported singing it or didn't see anything wrong. That's the reality that Jimmy Nesbitt and the moving forward to some new Ireland of respect ignore, the support for the murderers.
Not a good look, fecking eejits.
Being revealed as bomb planting terrorist supporters after honouring those killed in an explosion Takes a special kind of scum mentality
Up the fukn ra
Disgraceful.
But only if you aren't a hardcore republican with blinkers on it seems
I can't see the video. If the entire team is actually saying this then they deserve to just be ignored, and they are idiots. I am from the ROI.
Its bizarrely normal to sing this in some communities inc my own, as casually and without thinking about what youre saying, as singing sweet caroline.
Im not defending it, just making sure the distinction is there that this was obviously very stupid (very stupid) and childish, but absolutely not malicious. Just oblivious, stupid and insensitive.
Absolutely condemn it, as I have done. But the applogies seem completely sincere to me. A group of excited girls celebrating, singing a song that was common and instinctual to sing (ive sang it after winning matches myself, when young, though I dont anymore)- being confronted with how daft and insensitive it was, and how it overshadowed their achievement- genuinely regretful and apologetic.
So, we can move on imo. Shouldnt have happened. Got genuine apologies. Anymore histrionics is pearl clutching partisanship
Clowns, but not surprised. Soccer brings out the worst in people
This is the truth
“Soccer brings out the worst in people”
What kind of shit statement is that?
Read it again and then research soccer violence
It's absolutely true, soccer fans are lowest common denominator violent scum
One step forward and two steps back
Pure cringe. Really tarnishes what was a great match
The New IRA just killed an innocent journalist not too long ago.
And we still have people glorifying these organisations chanting "Up the RA".
Disgraceful to see people still glorifying groups which murder innocent people. I wonder how it makes Lyra McKees family feel when they see stuff like this.
Would it not be “Up the New Ra” they’d be chanting?
In my opinion you deserve whatever you get for being this stupid..
We’ve seen this time in and time out for the past few years, sporting teams get crucified for this on both sides and rightly so.. and you are stupid enough to literally LIVE STREAM it? You are a profesional footballer and public figure?
Ffs makes the rest of us all look bad
Useless shower. More reason to not even turn on the box when they are playing.
Depressing and so fucking stupid
I distinctly remember a certain video of an orange hall had people calling for those involved to lose their jobs and all the rest of it.
I wonder will there be a similar response here or will it be, as appears to be the case for some of those on this thread, a case of "oh silly young girls shouldn't have done that".
Fucking hypocrites, the country island is full of them.
Up the Old RA
That’s the inclusive ‘Ireland’ we are being sold?
Nope. They don't represent the majority of us but you already know that.
Irish people shouldn't have to curtail their heritage just because the colonizers are offended imo
Yep. This song could very well merely reference the Ra that won us our independence. I've heard it my entire life. None of those women sang it with malice. They've nothing to apologise for.
They won’t be singing like that when they get absolutely pumped by everyone at the World Cup. As someone from the south, they’re an utter embarrassment.
Wankers
What is it with wee girls in sports teams chanting up the RA? This happened last year too.
Inclusive new Ireland.
As a catholic this was just completely unnecessary
[removed]
How hard is it to not do that
This is disgusting
Next week we will bring you the middle easts premier band to sing all your favourite Al-Qaeda songs...
You don't win friends with salad is just as catchy
U lot are so pathetic up the ra
[removed]
Seriously when will they learn!
The shared future we keep hearing about…
Celtic AFC has supporters who are as insanely bigoted as Rangers and for Irish ROI supporters to be apeing their vocal hatred is sickening and just not worthy for the majority of wonderful Irish supporters. The FAI should issue a statement condeming these songs and the people who sing them - for me they are about ad Irish as the Ku Klux Klan
I’m from the south and I’m really embarrassed by this. Scrotes.
Incredible achievement all the same from the girls in green.
Doing the country proud
Wow
They are Singing about Ra the Egyptian god.
Ra was the king of the deities and the father of all creation. He was the patron of the sun, heaven, kingship, power, and light. He was not only the deity who governed the actions of the sun, he could also be the physical sun itself, as well as the day.

Embarrassing. These women are representing a team that selects players from the whole island. If the shoe was on the other foot and the NI women's team were singing the sash or a song that glorified a loyalist paramilitary most Irish would be rightly offended. Completely ruined what should have been a proud moment.
[removed]
Haha you think the civil war is thought before leaving or even thought well at leaving? You think that would glorify the IRA? Come on now if anything it presents a more honest image of people in war zones and where we end up during it.
Everything about history when its mainly done at leaving is how we get there. Literally nothing to glorify anything.
Damn , I was cheering them on as well. That's out the window now lol
Well they could be singing Fields of Athenry either... why do Protestants have such a dislike for the Irish Anthem and Irish Songs don't they realise these are traditional song for this island. Protestants were created here because Catholics during the Genocide who wanted food had to convert religions vicars demanded they did. Behind every bigoted Protestant is a family member that changed religions because they were starving. Not such a proud religion now eh!!
