I. Canada joins the war effort. A. Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was murdered by a Serbian nationalist and this began the chain of events leading up to World War I. 1. Austria attacked Serbia and countries began picking sides. a. Austria was allied with Germany b. Serbia was allied with Russia. France and Britain were allied with Russia.

Also, something that the alliances all wanted was the best resources such as; raw materials, gold, and produce. Lastly, with all the talk about war many of the countries in the alliance would use propaganda to distract the people of the real damage war can cause.

In due time, it was clear that no single European country could single-handedly hold supremacy over Europe or the world. To adjust to this reality, Europe began building a system of alliances. The Germans made an alliance with both Italy and Austria-Hungary. The French, British and Russians made a coalition to counter the German alliance system. The alliance system was a stabilizer in the sense it granted a balance of power in Europe.

The main causes of WWI were militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. The first main cause that was believed to have caused World War I is militarism which is the vigorous buildup of armed forces to intimidate and threaten other countries. Germany used militarism to eventually force Britain to become part of the alliance system. The second main cause was alliances. There were 2 major alliances that were involved in WWI.

World War I Causes Ever wonder why World War I occurred in the first place? There were many different circumstances that took place to cause the mass destruction that is known today as World War I. Some of these causes had been happening for a while, but others came about just before the war began. All the different causes eventually led to the beginning of Word War I.

The final two causes for the war was Alliances and the Assassination of the Archduke from the beginning of the war. The assassination of the Archduke was just a starting point for the war to begin. After the assassination, that’s when countries began forming alliances. There were two alliances: The Triple Alliances, or the Allies, and the Triple Entente, or the Central Powers. The Allies consisted of France, Great Britain, Russia (up to half way through the war), the United States (at the end of the war), and Italy (at the end of the war).

World War One has always been considered as one of the most significant international conflict which caused millions of people to die. The major countries that were involved were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Britain, and France, and even some countries in Asia although it was not major war in Asia. There were many long term and short term causes that led to this war. It is considered that Imperialism, Nationalism, Militarism, and Alliance systems had influenced Europe. To a large extent, I think militarism was the main cause of starting World War One.

The Triple-Alliance of 1882 linked Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple-Entente have 1907 was France, Great Britain, and Russia. Each alliance had treaties with one another which created some burden. When certain treaties were then misrepresented, it created chaos. Now these treaties were not formed overnight.

The four main causes of World War I, imperialism, nationalism, militarism, and alliances, in my opinion, the one that takes the most blame for the war is alliances. The reason why is because it is what got most of the world involved. When the Archduke was assassinated on June 28, 1914, it started the war. The allies of the sides fight with each other which were the Central Powers and the Allies. Then because some of the allies support imperialism, they compete for colonies and an example of this is France and Germany both wanting colonies in Asia as well as Africa.

WWI began in the 1914, the outbreak of WWI was due to a number of significant factors, which included a lot of Millenarianism and Nationalism and the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. However, the most important factors to be analysed will be the whole start of the war, which was caused through the nationalism and the militarism. Which only led up to the Assassination of the Archduke. Nationalism, was one of the biggest problems, due to the fact that every country was a nationalistic at that time. The whole nationalism started of in the early 1900, where all the european countries constituted a brutal rivalry and competition.

The first of these four problems was militarism. In each of the great powers of Europe, excluding Great Britain, an army was growing larger by the year as they glorified military might. Prussia was the most active in militarism as their army was one of the strongest and even helped secure the unification of Germany. But while the militarism increased the tensions in between the countries the tensions were strongly rooted in other problems as well.

Another cause was Military Alliances. In 1882, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy signed a treaty called the Triple Alliance. It was designed to protect its members against attack by France or Russia. The three members of the Alliance formed a powerful bloc in central Europe. Even though they were in the Alliance, Austria-Hungary and Italy were not very friendly.

- For example, France and Germany’s armies doubled from 1870 to 1914, there was also compitition between Britain and Germany over navel power. 3 -In 1906 British introduced the ‘Dreadnought’, Germans later began to create their own navel ships. -The Germans increased their military strength, with the ‘Schlieffen plan”, planning for them to attack France through Belgium if Russia declared war on them. -A key example of militarism was Germany had the strongest military build-up, as alliances started to declare war on each other they went straight for their plan of attack rather than waiting for events to unfold.
