Description
The flag of the territory of Guam is a rectangular field of marine blue with a red border. Its center contains the almond-shaped coat of arms that is 24 inches tall by 16 inches wide. Rather simplistic, the inside shows a boat landing on a sandy beach with just one palm tree. The coat of arms bears the following vibrant colors: yellow, brown, gray and red. The word “Guam” appears across in red. Guam's entire flag should be seventy eight inches long and forty inches wide.
Meaning
Though it looks boring, Guam's flag holds a lot of symbols dedicated to preserving its values and traditions. Guam's coat of arms, which doubles as its Great Seal, got its oval shape from the sling stone used by the island's early inhabitants, the Chamorro. These indigenous people expertly used the stone for weaponry and hunting with great dexterity. Inside the seal, the Hagåtña River empties into the sea indicating the giving nature of Guam's people. The boat , or proa, symbolizes the mode of transportation of the Guam people while the lone palm tree suggests life and survival in an otherwise hopeless situation. The unmoving landmass in the background shows the Chamorro commitment to their home and heritage.
At first glance, Guam's flag looks like an island paradise, but with a little background knowledge,the seal becomes a story of the strong Chamorro people and how they persevered even during the most terrible of times.
History
The flag of Guam was designed by Helen Paul, the wife of a U.S. naval officer, in 1917 and was officially adopted by the Guam congress in 1948. Prior to this time, Guam didn't have its own flag since it previously used the flag of Spain during the Spanish occupation and later, the Japan flag during World War Two. The bordering red strip was added after the second war to remember the hardships and losses during these troubling conflicts.
Flown with the U.S. flag, the Guam flag maintains its position beneath or on the left side.
