WATCH: Winter Storm Warning in effect ahead of anticipated snow, ice
a close eye on your pets, make sure they are staying warm and safe in the winter storm that we're about to have right and you know, I was just on twitter and I was looking at one of our sister stations in boston um and it's four degrees in boston right now. My old station of Vermont, it is in the negative teens. This is apparently the coldest area they've had since 2018. So well we're about to have some winter weather we haven't seen since 2018. So you know what we're in for our own little just like to Sprinkle in a little perspective here, but we can be thankful for this. Absolutely for us though, this is a very meaningful event. Here's a look at the winter storm alerts throughout the area overnight tonight into overnight tomorrow. That's why while we're under a winter storm warning throughout the area, all of this area shaded in pink, which is our entire forecast area, dangerous roads will be the main concern. We've got significant snowfall on the western side And then as we look towards our southern and eastern parts of the Piedmont high ice accumulations. In addition to that ice accumulating on trees and power lines, we've got winds gusting up to 40 mph. That means power outages, those winds also mean blowing snow. We've got icy roads, freezing temperatures overnight, sunday into monday morning and monday into Tuesday morning as well. Here's where we stand right now, we're looking outside and we've got a couple of those flurries in the mountains right now and it's from that low pressure system. But what we're going to notice is the low pressure system kind of move south. Kind of takes a U. Turn and heads through our area as we head through early tomorrow morning. Here's a look satellite and radar for us. As we're looking at the mountains, they've got those flurries. The rest of us are dry at this point but we're cold 33 degrees in Winston Salem and in Asheboro, everyone else below freezing at this point, Heading through the next 12 hours temperatures get to the upper 30s. That means when we start to see some showers in the Piedmont, it starts off as some light drizzle and then eventually turns into flurries as our temperatures fall tonight. The photo is pretty similar. It's only a 20% chance as we go through the day today, it will not accumulate. So we're not looking at this being impactful. This is not to be considered the beginning of the storm because we get a pretty decent break before the significant weather moves towards us as we head through the day tomorrow. But in the mountains all day today, a 20% chance for those light flurries. What you can do now during this relatively calm day, make sure you have emergency items, flashlights, radios, batteries for those flashlights and radios nonperishable food blankets. Speaking of blankets, make sure you have fuel for alternative heating and cooling in case you lose power because it's getting cold overnight. And then as we're looking at the vehicles, if you do absolutely have to be out on the roads on sunday, hopefully you can change your plans. But if you have to be out there, make sure you have a full take of gas, you've got boots in your car, shovels, ice, melt, scrapers, things like that. Also make sure you've got supplies like water and food in your car in case you get stranded. Here's a look at the next three days we've got those showers in the mountains first and then by two a.m. On sunday we're still dry cloudy for sure. And then after that we start to see that snow work in. So here's a look at 6 30 tomorrow morning, this starts office snow, then we've got some sleep mixing in from time to time through the later part of the morning and into the early afternoon that continues for a little while, but you can see still a lot of snow during that time eventually transitions back to snow for us all. And then we also have some rain in the southeastern part of the forecast area. You might be hoping that would wash away some of the ice. Unfortunately, that won't be the case where we've got some heavier rain maybe sure, but the lighter rain will just add to those ice accumulations and that's what we've got for the later part of the event. Again though, it turns back into snow and then it lifts out of our area as we head into early monday morning. That's when we got there. We have that slick road concern though, monday morning and then again on Tuesday morning, here's snow and sleet estimates by the time it's all said and done 2 to 5 inches throughout the triad, 5 to 8 inches in the foothills, 8 to 12 in the mountains and then over a foot in those higher elevations, you notice the south, southern and eastern parts of the Piedmont have those lower snow totals. Well, they make up for it with ice. So we're looking at heavy glaze in those spots and of course that can cause just as many concerns on the roadways and with power outages. Tomorrow is an alert day because of all of this messy wet weather monday and Tuesday are impact days because of the slick morning commutes. And then by the end of the week, we probably have some more wet wintry weather GOOD WARNING FOR YOU THIS WEEKEND TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON YOUR PETS. MAKE SURE THEY ARE STAYING WARM AND SAFE IN THE WINTER STORM THAT WE’RE ABOUT TO HAVE RIGHT AND YOU KNOW, I WAS JUST ON TWITTER AND I WAS LOOKING AT ONE OFUR O SISTER STATIONS IN BOSTON, AND IT’S IS IN BOSTON RIGHT NOW? OH MY OLD STATION O VFERMONT. IT IS IN THE NEGATIVE TEENS. THIS IS APPARENTLY THE COLDEST AIR THEY’VE HAD SINCE 2018. SO WELL, WE’RE ABOUT TO HAVE SOME WINTER WEATHER. WE HAVEN’T SEEN SINCE 2018 SO, YOU KNOW WHAT WE’RE IN FOR OUR OWN LITTLE LIKE JTUS SPRINKLE IN A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE HERE. BUT IT CAN BE THANKFUL FOR THIS. ABSOLUTELY FOR US THOUGH. THIS IS A VERY MEANINGFUL EVENT. HERE’S A LOOK AT THE WINTER STORM ALERTS THROUGHOUT THE AREA OVERNIGHT TONHTIG INTO OVERNIGHT TOMORROW. THAT’S WHERE WLEHI WE’RE UNDER A WINTER STORM WARNING THROUGHOUT THE AREA. OF THIS AREA SHADED IN PINK, WHICH IS OUR ENTIRE FORECAST AREA. DANGEROUS ROADS WILL BE THE MAIN CONCERN. WE’VE GOT SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ON THE WESTERN SIDE AND THEN AS WE LOOK TOWARDSUR S OOUTHERN NEW EASTERN PARTS OF THE PIEDMONT HIGH ICE ACCUMULATIONSN I ADDITION TO THAT ICE ACCUMULATING ON TREESND A POWER LINES, WE’VE GOT WINDS GUSNGTI UP TO 40 MILES AN HOUR. THAT MEANS POWER OUTAGES THOSE WINDS ALSO MEAN BLOWING SNOW. WE’VE GOT ICY ROADS FREEZING TEMPERATURES OVERNIGHT SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MORNING AND MONDAY INTO TUESDAY. MORNING AS WELL. HERE’S WHERE WE STAND RIGHT NOW. WE’RE LOOKING OUTSIDE AND WE’VE GOT A COUPLE OF THOSE FLURRIES IN THE MOUNTAINS RIGHT NOW, AND IT’S FROM THAT LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM, BUT WHAT WE’RE GOING TO NOTICE IS THE LOW PSSREURE SYSTEM KIND OF MOVES SOUTHIN KD OF TAKES A U-TURN AND HEADS THROUGH OUR AARE AS WE HEAD THROUGH EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. HERE’S A LOOK AT SATELLITE AND RADAFORR US AS WE’RE LOOKING AT THE MOUNTAINS. THEY’VE GOT THOSE FLURRIES. THE REST OF US ARE DRY AT TSHI POINT, BUT WE’RE COLD 33 DEGREES IN WINSTON-SALEM AND AN ASHEBORO EVERYONE ELSE BELOW FREEZING AT THIS POINT. HEADING THROUGH THE NTEX 12 HOURS TEMPERATURES GET TO THE UPPER 3.0S THAT MEANS WHEN WE START TO SEE SOME SWEHORS IN THE PIEDMONT. IT STARTS OFF AS SOME LIKE DRIZZLE AND THEN EVENTUALLY TURNS INTO FLURRIES AS OUR TEMPERATURES FALL TONIGHT. ETH FOOTHILL IS PRETTY SIMILAR. IT’S ONLY A 20% CHANCE AS WE GO THROUGH THE DAY TODAY. IT WILL NOT ACCUMULATE SO WE’RE NOT LOONGKI AT THIS BEING IMPACTFUL. THISS I NOT TO BE CONSIDERED THE BEGINNING OF THETO SRM BECAUSE WE GET A PRETTY DECENT BREAK BEFORE THE SIGNIFICANT WET WEATHER MOVES TOWARDS US AS WE ADHE THROUGH THE DAY TOMORROW, BUT MOUNTAINS ALL DAY TODAY A 20% CHAENC FOR THOSE LIGHT FLURRIES WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW DURING THIS RELATIVELY CALM DAY. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EMERGENCY ITEMS FLASHLIGHTS RADIOS BATTERIESOR F THOSE FLASHLIGHTS AND RADIOS NON-PERISHABLE FOOD BLANKETS SPEAKING OF BLANKETS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FUEL FOR ALTERNATIVE HEATING AND COOLING IN CASE YOU LEOS POWER BECAUSE IT’S GETTING CDOL OVERNIGHT AND THEN AS WE’RE LOOKING AT THE VEHICLES IF YOU DO ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO BE OUT ON THE ROADS ON SUNDAY. HOPEFULLY YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR PLANS, BUT IF YOU HEAV TO BE OUT THERE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULL TANK OF GAS YOU. BOOTS IN YOUR CAR SHOVELS ICE MELT SCRAPERS THINGS LIKE THAT. ALSO, MAKE SURE YOU’VE GOT SUPPLIES LIKE WATER AND FOOD IN YOUR CAR IN CASE YOU GET STRANDED. HE'R’S A LOOK AT THE NEXT THREE DAYS. WE’VE GOT THE SHOWERS IN THE MOUNTAINSIR FST AND THEN BY 2 AM ON SUNDAY. WE’RE STILL DRY CLOUDY FOR SURE AND THEN AFTER THAT WE START TO SEE THAT SNOW WORKING. SO HERE’S A LOOK AT 60:3 TOMORROW MORNING THIS STARTS OFF AS SNOW THENE' ’VE GOT SOME SLEET MIXING IN FROM TEIM TO TIME THROUGH THE LATER PART OF THE MORNINGND A INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON. I CONTINUES FOR A LITTLE WHILE, BUT YOU CAN SEE STILL A LOT OF SNOW DURING TTHA TIME EVENTUALLY IT TRANSITIONS BACK TO SNOW FOR US ALL AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE SOME RAIN IN THE SOUTHEASTERN PART OF THE FORECAST AREA. YOU MIGHT BE HOPING THAT WOULD WASH AWAY SOME OF THE ICE. UNFORTUNATELY. THAT WON’T BE THE CASE WHERE WE’VE GOT SOME HEAVIER RAIN MAYBE SURE BUT THE LIGHTER RAIN WILL JUSTDD A TO THOSE ICE ACCUMULATIONS AND THAT’S WHAT WE’VE GOT FOR THE LATER PART OF THE EVENT AGAIN, THOHUG TURNS BACK INTO SNOW AND THEN IT LIFTS OUTF O OUR AREA AS WE HEAD INTO EARLY MONDAY MORNING. THAT’S WHEN WE GOT WE HAVE THAT SLICK ROAD. CONCERN THOUGH MONDAY MORNING AND THEN AGAIN ON TUESDAY MORNING. HERE’S SNOW AND SLEET ESTIMATES BY THE TIME IT’S ALL SDAI AND DONE TWO TO FEIV INCHES THROUGHOUT THE TRIAD FIVE TO EIGHT INCHES IN THE FOOTHILLS 8 TO 12 IN THE MOUNTAINSND A THEN OVER A FOOT IN THOSE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. YOU NOTICE THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN PARTS OF THE PIEONDMT HAVE THOSE LOWER SNOW TOTALS. WELL, THEY MAKE UP FOR IT WITH ICE. SO WE’RE LOOKING AT HEAVY GLAZE IN THOSE SPOTS AND OF COURSE THAT CAN CAUSE JUSTS A MANY CONCERNS ON THE ROADWAYS AND THWI POWER OUTAGES. TOMORROWN A ALERTS DAY BECAUSE OF ALLF O THIS MESSY WET WEATHER MONDAY AND TUESDAY ARE IMPACT DAYS BECAUSE OF THE SLICK MORNING COMMUTES AND THEN BY THE END OF THE WEEK,
