Constipation: Constipation becomes more of an issue as we grow older. If a high fiber diet, plenty of water and avoidance of too much dairy( they harder the stool) doesnt keep tou regular, then it's much better to take a daily laxative than to strain or not go for days. More importantly,  if you haven't had a recent colonoscopies exam, you should have one to make sure nothing else is going on.

That history of constipation: It is a serious indictment on your diet.  Think seriously about fruit and vegetables as the major component.  Maybe a regular dose of mineral oil would help.

See your doctor.: How to gradually get off laxatives will depend largely on why you are constipated in the first place. This will take a good history and physical and perhaps some tests. You should make an appointment to see a gastroenterologist soon. In the meantime you could start adding fiber to your diet and maybe even add a fiber supplement such as Metamucil once a day with extra liquids. Good luck.

That's a lot!: And you would probably never be able to get out of your bathroom. I assume that you are taking them because you feel constipated. The most common cause is your diet. Why don't you sit down and take a diet history of what you eat and how much for the next two weeks. Then make a virtual appt. or see a live gastroenterologist nearby. You may have mega colon and need bowel retraining (no kidding)!

Laxative Abuse: Nope. Absolutely not. This addiction is a common problem.  The obsession is nearly debilitating in this addiction and one must get some control and healing so that they do not damage their gut, liver, or any other internal organ.

i take 10mg lexapro 1a day & 1mg klonopin 2 a day. because of this im starting to become constipated. is it safe for me to take a senna root laxative tea before bed? i take first dose of lexapro & klonopin @ 7:20am and 2nd dose klonopin @ 7:20 pm.
