The menorah (hanukkiah) is lit each night of Hanukkah (Chanukah). On the first night, a single flame is lit. On the second, another flame is lit. Until, on the eighth and final night of Hanukkah, 8 flames are burning bright (click here for full lighting instructions).

The menorah is lit after sundown (except on Friday, when it is lit before the Shabbat candles) and must burn until at least a half-hour after nightfall. (click here for the Hanukkah calendar)

The following two (or three) blessings (prayers) are said while holding the shammash, immediately before the Hanukkah menorah is lit, saying the third blessing only on the first night or the first time lighting this Chanukah (click here for a printable PDF of the blessings.)
