2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Reliability - Consumer Reports
This edition of the Ram 1500 is much improved since the last time we tested one in 2004. It rides and handles better -- and it's quieter. The optional full-time four-wheel-drive system and stability control are definite pluses. But the ride remains jittery, the rear seat is cramped, and getting in and out requires a steep climb. The 2500 heavy-duty version (which we also tested) has a harsher ride and longer braking.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"another cheap item to wear out in less than 30000 miles"

Edward K., NY (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SXT 5.7-L V8)

"stuck rt front caliper in the middle of a trip. brakes were just inspected 3 months prior, less than 2000 miles"

Anonymous, MI (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4.7-L V8)

"caliper stuck causing brake pads replacement"

Matthew W., NJ (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Parking brake

"Needed to replace all the cables for the parking brake"

John H., BC (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4.7-L V8)

"Needed a new piece nothing major"

Nicole K., IL (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7-L V8)

"Parking brake locked up while backing the vehicle out of the garage. Had the vehicle towed to the shop on a bed type vehicle because the rear wheels were locked up. Loading, and unloading the vehicle with the locked brakes damaged the brake calipers necessitating replacement of the calipers in addition to the parking brake cable. The parking break was not in use at the time the parking break locked up. The shop was assuming transmission/differential problems until the got the vehicle on a lift. Repair cost was close to $1000."

Anonymous, MN (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Parking break set itself and locked in break position when the vehicle was put in reverse. Back wheels locked up, vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. Emergency break cable, rear rotors, and calipers needed to be replaced. Total cost $1400. The emergency brake had not been set and the reason for the failure was unknown."

Sherman R., MN (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Pulsation or vibration

"Chassis vibrates when brakes are applied. This problem has existed since new and dealer or no one else seems to know what causes it."

Anonymous, AZ (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SXT 5.7-L V8)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"I had the a/c worked on and recharged because it wasn't getting cool.. The technician told me if it quit working again then it was the seals in the a/c compressor that were bad."

Anonymous, (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Unsure 5.7-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"Truck has dual climate zones. The system is comprised of a series of plenums, doors controlled by actuators and a control box. Certain doors in the system (L/R side or H/C temp mix, etc) have worn out so that they do not always open or close. According to online discussions with other owners who have this problem and companies that provide a fix, the worst factor is the plastic tabs or stops on the actuators. The system must test the position of the doors during what could be considered a POST. The actuators that turn the doors are more powerful than the tabs that are in place. The tabs become worn or broken. The system cannot accurately read the position of the door and may open/close too much, too little or not at all. Constantly sliding the temperature from one extreme to the other will eventually trigger movement in the doors. It's so bad that I try to leave the temperature at one extreme or another if possible. For example, in the temperate months (spring/fall) to turn on my defrost, I must first test the temperature after the truck warms up by using the dash vents. I must test each side independently. Otherwise, I run the risk of defrosting my windshield with A/C. Because the defrost needs to be on in the morning and the A/C in the afternoon, when I get home from work, I set my defroster with an already warm engine. I have broken the climate control panel slider by moving it too much (probably too forcefully) trying to get the temperature I wanted."

Steve S., IA (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
Blower (fan) motor

"Radiator fan motor quit spinning fast enough to create necessary cooling of the radiator. Therefore, air conditioner doesn't blow cold air when the temperature is above 90 degrees."

Anonymous, NV (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7-L V8)

"blowe fan periodically won't work."

Anonymous, TX (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SXT 4.7-L V8)
Heater system

"Heater stopped working. Dealer was unable to fix it."

Anonymous, BC (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"While it may be a 3rd party site and they may also be selling products, the description of the problem on heatertreater.net seems to be the most accurate and detailed: There are multiple problems with all of the doors in the plenum system delivering hot or cold air to the cab. There may or may not be a flaw in the direction of placement of the heater/evap cores themselves, this may also be a matter of opinion. The problems that I personally see are this: Sometimes, choosing hot air (in the winter) will not provide hot air. This is usually on one side of the dual climate system only. Either side is equally affected and random. The same is true for cold air in the summer. The only guaranteed source of cold air is to roll down the window in January. I live in Iowa, this is unacceptable. I do not believe the problem is in the controls. I have replaced them with NOS controls and have the same exact problems. Multiple attempts at sliding the selector lever to the desired temperature will work, but it's like playing craps. Come on, seven! Baby needs heat!"

Steve S., IA (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"directional controls no longer working. can't direct heat to floor."

Chris B., MO (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4.7-L V8)

Chris S., MI (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Tie rods

"I was driving home from work when they broke and it had to be picked up by the dealer and fixed."

Anonymous, (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Unsure 5.7-L V8)

"The tie rods broke on both sides of the truck. When I had hit at the shop I told them to fix the problems and they only fixed part of the problem and I took it to a different dealer and they told me that the problems hadn't been fixed with the axle and I told them to fix it and do it right this tie which they did."

Anonymous, IN (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)

"Dealer should have replaced a tie rod when I bought the vehicle in 2014...My mechanic found play in the front wheels!! I was not able to have my mechanic precheck this truck at the time of purchase."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"See previous statement."

Anonymous, UT (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SXT 4.7-L V8)
Exhaust manifold

"Within the first year of the purchase, the Check Engine light came on. I took the truck to the closest dealer where the analysis was "engine running lean, and an exhaust leak." As I was traveling, I was unable to leave the truck with that dealership, so they reset and cleared the codes, then gave me the report on their diagnostics. Upon returning home I took the truck to the dealership of purchase, was fixed and returned to me. The fix did not last. After several trips back to the dealership for the same problem and Chrysler Corp. sending someone to look at my truck a pinhole leak was discovered in both exhaust manifolds. The manifolds were replaced and I have had no further problems. Repair was made in May of 2013 at 55,311 miles."

Anonymous, UT (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SXT 4.7-L V8)

Anonymous, MO (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"Standard locations for winter states: wheelwells, bottom of doors, tailgate. Did not have ANY rust in these locations when bought in 12/16. Appeared by the first winter I owned it and degraded rapidly."

Steve S., IA (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
Rust

"The truck is rusting badly above the rear wheels and on the rocker panels even though I regularly wash and wax"

Bill H., OH (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Rear wheel flairs have rusted considerably in the last year."

Rosalie J., CT (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"For some reason the rust on these trucks is always around the wheel wells and the tailgate and the bed of the truck and under the doors. Even when it is washed when it is winter weather it is kept clean but still seems to want to rust out in these areas."

Anonymous, IN (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"The auto 4WD rotary switch to place the drive line in 2WD, 4WD Auto or 4WD Hi, 4WD low has no effect. It always stays in 4WD Auto. The actuator that moves the solenoid to engage the front wheels stopped working, according to the mechanic. The actuator needs to be replaced and very possibly the fuse box - they call it total power module. The estimated cost of repair ranges from $800 to $1500."

Anonymous, RI (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"Again this should have been picked up at the dealership prior to sale! 4WD spline did not engage so no 4WD when the truck was in 4WD. Short of driving through a swamp on my test drive how was I to know 4WD dod not engageÉÉ"

Anonymous, ON (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Driveshaft or axle

"replace rear end gears"

Paul S., NY (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"I took the vehicle to 3 different shops to get estimate. The issue was that I was hearing grinding and cyclical noise coming from the front part of the truck. I heard the noise like this before when I had other front wheel drive car. The issue with the front wheel drive car was a worn CV joint and axle. Replacing them solve the issues. However, with this truck, I replaced the wheel baring and axles, but did not solve the noise issue. I spent $1600 fixing the non-issues. Apparently other items needed to replaced anyways, however, I am not going to have them randomly guess what's wrong with the truck, and spend $500 to $800 each time they are wrong. I have to question their competency. They are now saying that it is the front differential. One estimate was $2300. The other estimate was about $1000."

Anonymous, RI (2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. These inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

In July 2015, and under a consent order with NHTSA, the company agreed to offer owners three options for remedying their vehicles: perform the original remedy, offer to repurchase the vehicle at the fair market value plus 10%, or offer an additional incentive offer towards the purchase of a new Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, or Fiat vehicle. Chrysler will notify owners of the new recall options in a letter expected to be mailed on August 31, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N49.
