32 Ways to fight the boredom
Girl looking at phone

Do you have a teen looking for some things to do because they are bored? Since our kids are at home all the time because of social distancing, it is difficult to keep them entertained. They don’t get to physically see their friends and many parents must work during the day. Being stuck at home can make your kids extremely bored. How can we bust the boredom, especially if we have teenagers? What do 13-year-old girls like to do when they are bored?

Welcome to this guide of 32 things to do when you are a bored teenager. Instead of coming up with ideas on my own, I went to an actual teenager, my 13-year-old daughter. If you have a teenage girl, share these boredom-fighting ideas with them. A lot of these ideas would be good boredom busting ideas for tweens as well. My daughter wrote the following advice.

Fun Ideas to fight boredom (written by a teen with a little editing from mom)

Hang out with your friends and family online

You may not get to spend time with your friends and extended family in person, but you can still connect with them and “see” them.

  • FaceTime your friends so that you’ll actually be able to talk to them “face to face.” If you don’t have Facetime, there are other apps that allow you to talk to them.
  • Have a spa night with a friend using an app that allows you to see each other.
  • Play games with your grandparents using Zoom.

Become more fashionable

Make yourself feel confident! It doesn’t matter if you can’t go anywhere. Feeling confident will help you feel better about yourself.

  • Putting together cute outfits is great because you will feel cute every day of the quarantine.
  • Online shopping (even if it’s just “window shopping” is a great way to pass the time. One of my favorite sites is Lululemon. Lululemon is an amazing store and is best known for their amazing leggings, aligns and wunder unders.
  • If you don’t want to spend as much (Lululemon is expensive), shop at Fabletics! You can get two pairs of activewear leggings for $24!
  • Paint your nails. Painting your nails is fun and makes your nails look pretty.
  • Try different hairstyles.
  • Try a new makeup look.
Painting toenails.

Get creative. Using your creativity is a great way to not be bored.

One way to fight boredom is to do creative things.

  • Photography is a great thing to learn and will help you to be a more advanced photographer as you post on Instagram and other photo-related websites.
  • Paint or sketch.
  • Write songs.
  • Look at Pinterest. Find some ideas to spark your creativity!

Get organized and declutter

If you really want to make a difference in how you feel, this is a great time to get organized and get rid of things.

  • Make a schedule. Making a schedule is a huge deal and will make you feel a lot better to have a structure throughout the course of the day.
  • Organizing your music playlist helps you to come back to your music and choose which “vibe” you want to listen to.
  • Declutter your bedroom. Decluttering relieves so much stress. When you’re cleaning your room or other rooms you won’t be like “I have no idea where to put this so I’ll put it on my dresser or desk.” If you use it a lot, keep it. If you see no reason to use it, get rid of it.
  • Deep clean and organize your bedroom This relieves so much stress because your room will look much bigger and you will feel so much better.
  • Sell old clothes. Now this one is a great way to get money or you can trade old clothes in for ones that you really want. The best places to sell clothes are sites like “Poshmark” www.poshmark.com and “Thredup” www.thredup.com  (If you sign up with the code SAVVINGMOM on Poshmark, you will get $10 on your first order. This offer won’t last. If you use the link provided for Thredup, you will receive $10 off your first order.)

Learn to cook and make beverages

If your parents let you experiment in the kitchen, you can learn some new skills.

  • Make something easy like chia pudding. Chia pudding has so many health benefits and is an alternative to really sugary things.
  • Bake. Try to bake with ingredients that you already have at your house. If you don’t have the ingredients, you can get the needed supplies when your parents go to the store.
  • Make a drink. You can find many drink recipes online.
  • Try different types of tea.
Strawberry smoothie

Be physically active

Being active makes you feel better physically.

  • If you have approval from a doctor and you know you are healthy, do a workout. Working out is a great thing to do right now because you have so much time to do it. You don’t need a whole gym, you can actually work out at home. “Chloe Ting” has some great workouts.
  • Learn yoga. Yoga is very relaxing and can release tension that you may have.

Be Entertained

There are so many streaming services that you can use when you are at home to find movies and music.

  • Watch a movie. Sometimes it is nice to sit back, relax with some popcorn, and watch a movie.
  • Listen to music. Music is a great way to improve your life and make you feel much better.

Take care of your mental health

This is a difficult time and it’s important to do positive things for yourself. Practice some self-care.

  • Meditate. Take time to wind down and relax and help bring more positivity into your life with meditation.
  • Sing. Singing is a fun thing to do and it makes you feel more positive.
  • Go through old pictures. Looking at old pictures is a great way to recall past memories.
  • Plan a vacation. Don’t make any reservations for any place right now, but think about your dream place and plan with your friends or family. You never know, we could have a summer after all!

Train your brain

We are not going to physical school and we need to keep our brains active.

  • Read. Reading makes you smarter.
  • Try learning a foreign language. A great app is www.duolingo.com and you can learn a lot in only one day. The more you do it, the more you learn!
Girl reading a book.

These are just some of the ways for 13-year-old teenagers to keep themselves entertained when they stay at home for long spans of time. Hopefully, there are some ideas here that you can use when you’re kid says that they are bored. What ideas do you have? Share them in the comments.
