More than 40 people are now facing charges in connection with the riots and looting from over the weekend in Sacramento, officials said. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office announced 32 new charges stemming from Sunday night. Prosecutors say the crimes happened at several stores, including Target, Rite Aid, Walgreens and CVS.The district attorney's office also says alcohol was stolen from P.F. Chang's and the newly opened Antojo Street Taco Bar. Officials also say two people accused of looting a Boost Mobile store led officers on a chase at speeds of over 100 mph with a baby in the back seat.The district attorney's office said it supports people's right to protest but that it will prosecute anyone who creates a threat to public safety.Protests erupted across the country last week in response to George Floyd’s police custody death in Minneapolis. In Sacramento, six days of protests – Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – led to hundreds of people marching through parts of the city each night. On Saturday night, as protest crowds dispersed, there was vandalism and looting in downtown. On Sunday night, while there was a large crowd of protesters near the Capitol, there were several instances of looting in downtown and midtown.A citywide curfew -- which began Monday and lasts from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. -- was put in place in response to the violence and looting seen over the weekend. The National Guard was also called in.Sacramento’s curfew will continue through this weekend, according to Mayor Darrell Steinberg.
