Obsolete Calibre Westley Richards 'Gahendra' Martini 0.450/.577 rifle SOLD

This an extremely rare Nepalese issue Westley Richards Martini rifle, one of only a few hundred ever made. Based on the 1869 Westley Richards patented design, it was manufactured locally in Nepal under the direction of General Gahendra Rana in the 1880's, and hence it is often called the "Gahendra Martini". This rifle was issued to elite Ghurka regiments, and was considered superior to the Martini design. The major advantage of this rifle was a feature allowing its entire action to be removed as one unit for ease of servicing. Production however caused logistic problems and by 1894 the Ghurkas were short of modern rifles. Finally the British came to the rescue with a delivery of several thousand Martini rifles in late 1894, consequently, Nepalese Westley Richards rifles were withdrawn from service and stored for many decades in the government warehouse. This example is in complete, and surprisingly good condition for it's nearly 130 year age. It has a full working action, and is classed as 'obsolete calibre' so does not require any deactivation by law. The woodwork shows sign of damage but is all there. The barrel has some rust pitting, but the breech still has most of its blued finish. Part of the cleaning rod is missing. More photos and details on request.
