Join the Gadgeteers at your local library this summer

West Berkshire Libraries will be challenging primary school children to read up to six library books between July 1 and September 15.

This is a great way for children to keep up with their reading during the summer holidays, as they collect free incentives from their local library for their achievements as they read, including medals and certificates for all who complete the challenge.

From July 1, children aged four to 11 can sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at their local library.

The theme of this year's challenge is ‘Gadgeteers’, a celebration of creative thinking and teamwork, which has been developed in partnership with the Science Museum Group.

There will be something for every young innovator to enjoy from food, fashion, music and sport.

There will also be a mini-challenge for pre-school children and one for the grown ups too.

Howard Woollaston (Con, Lambourn), West Berkshire Council’s executive member for housing, leisure and culture, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is extremely popular and really is the perfect mix of fun and learning.

"Children love the themes and collecting their medals and certificates, this year’s theme – Gadgeteers – will inspire children to discover the amazing science and innovation that is everywhere around us.’’

There are plenty of opportunities for adults to get involved too by volunteering to help run the Summer Reading Challenge at their local library over the summer.

It is free to join and borrow books from West Berkshire Libraries, for all people living, working or studying in West Berkshire, as well as babies and young people who can borrow up to 15 books at a time, including audiobooks (on CD), e-books and e-audiobooks.
