West Ham 5-0 Freiburg: David Moyes praises West Ham's 'brilliant achievement'

West Ham have reached their third consecutive European quarter-final

West Ham manager David Moyes has described reaching a third successive major European quarter-final as a "brilliant achievement".

The Hammers registered their biggest European win by beating Freiburg 5-0 at the London Stadium.

They will be part of Friday's Europa League last-eight draw - the first time they have reached that stage in three successive seasons.

Goals from Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Cresswell and a brilliant Mohamed Kudus double also took West Ham to their biggest win since Moyes came back to the club in December 2019. That was when they faced a battle to beat the drop, which wasn't avoided until the final couple of games.

Moyes admitted he couldn't imagine the progress West Ham have made since then.

"I am really pleased able to give West Ham something," he said. "I didn't want to be managing team at the bottom of league. I wanted to be managing a team challenging and, in the main, we have been that.

"The club has moved on so much in the last few years. Avoiding relegation, making Europe, getting there a second year, winning a trophy, and now a quarter-final. It is a brilliant achievement. It is hard to say how good it has been and we have also brought in some really good players."

One of the most recent is Kudus.

The Ghana star has not been the most consistent performer since his arrival from Ajax last summer.

However, even with the tie already secured, he lit up the London Stadium with a superb late double.

Kudus' first effort was a solo run through the middle of the pitch, which the Freiburg defence was unable to stop. The second was a brutal shot there was no chance of keeping out.

"The first one reminded me of those old dribbling wingers who used to run and take people on, with snakey hips to find a way through," said Moyes. "It was a brilliant individual goal - a real Roy of the Rovers type goal."

    When moyes took over at West ham they were on the way down AGAIN . Now they're 7th in the league , another Europe quarter final and won the europa conference league. The moyes out brigade are EMBARASSING

    DM has done so much for the Irons, got them from being a relegation candidate to being contenders for europe each year, first time in our history 3 succesive years in europe, selling Declan Rice at the right time and using the money from the sale wisely. Long may he stay with us. COYI

      Ah Roger, the voice of sense, but most of the fans aren't the sharpest tools in the box, they'd rather be relegation fodder w a chance of champo football rather than being top 10 in the prem & in the final stages of european football.
      Apparently style matters, Burnley believe that!

      I get why you think this. But today proves the anti Moyes brigade right. They’ve been asking for more attractive, attacking football since mid way through last season.
      Since half time at Burnley that’s how we’ve set up and what do you know? They were right!
      Moyes can stay as long as he likes if we play like that.

    A person like David Moyes is in there for the long haul. He wants to build strong foundations, which will take time. Within each season, given WHU's resources, he probably understands that they cannot last a full season playing at a hyper pace, and knowing fully well that their bench strength is not strong; therefore he has to prioritize, and probably knows when to apply the finishing 'kick'.

    Bit of a dour personality, but has got more for west ham fans than probably any other manager could have done, so enjoy it.
    There will be some at Man U wish they had given him a bit longer like they did fergie, and he would have saved them millions as well

    Read twice that kudos has been inconsistent. Not sure I agree with that view. He may not always score but he is always a threat a contributes hugely.

    The West Ham fans probably furious over this result, a good proportion of them would rather lose than admit Moyes is their most successful manager in their lifetime.

      Except that wasn't Moyesball, which is sitting back in a defensive, counter-attacking style with 20% possession. Last night was something more akin to Ron Greenwood's West Ham Way: free-flowing, attacking football which Moyes hardly ever allows.

      You are spot on with your assessment qwerty. This yet another example of misinformation on media reporting. Kudus scored two fantastic goals, but his first was pure class, bringing the ball out of West Ham's half, with skill and strength. All the goals were well taken and an enjoyable game too. I know West Ham are not one of the media darlings, eh.....Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal, etc. COYI 😉
