Established in 1987, the Marvin S. Cone Annual High School Juried Art Show honors its founder and his enthusiasm for young people, the arts, and his timeless effort in making the event what it is today. Inspired by the creativity of art students in Martin County, he encouraged them to pursue even greater achievements by transforming the annual high school art exhibit into an event that truly recognized student’s artistic accomplishments. MartinArts is proud to honor Mr. Cone’s legacy with this annual tradition.

“The Hand You’re Dealt” by Hollyn Lewis, South Fork High School

Each year MartinArts presents the Marvin S. Cone Annual High School Juried Art Show to recognize the artistic talents of Martin County high school students. The art teachers at each school select each piece of artwork for entry in the exhibit. It is a highly competitive process; the categories for cash awards are photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media/assemblage, printmaking, and drawing. The awards reception on Tuesday, April 30, is held at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery. Additionally, each high school principal and the school superintendent select pieces to purchase that become a part of a permanent collection at their respective high schools and the superintendent’s office.

Support the creative and artistic talents of high school students in the Martin County area by sponsoring this annual exhibition, which has impacted over 1,500 students since 1987! Sponsorships contribute to enhancing judges’ awards across various mediums, covering professional framing costs, and hosting an awards reception for students and their families. Sponsors also get the chance to acquire a student’s artwork through a Purchase Award, where 100% of the purchase amount goes to the student, and they can present the award at the Awards Reception. Your generosity helps maintain the legacy of this distinctive educational opportunity, inspiring young visual artists in our community.

How will your gift support this legacy exhibition?

$2,500 pays for approximately 50% of the framing expenses.

$1,500 provides the awards given to the students.

$500 provides refreshments for student artists and families

“Together Forever” by Carol Moon

Carol Moon tells The Rickie Report, ” My mission is to infuse life into every canvas, transcending mere visual representation by infusing vibrant color and emotion with each stroke. Color, to me, is a language capable of narrating stories, inspiring change, connecting hearts, and fostering happiness. The techniques I use illuminate the simple moments of life creating tangible, visual narratives, aiming not only to captivate the eye but to stir the soul and inspire the viewer. My goal is to brighten the world with beauty, nurturing a shared appreciation for the richness that life offers”.  Guided by her parents from childhood,  Carol developed an appreciation for God’s creation—the intricacies of a flower, the brilliance of a sunset, the serenity of a white sandy beach, the playful breeze in a tall field, and the majestic presence of the ocean. These daily treasures, abundant in colors and contrast, deeply resonate with her heart.

“I believe that at the core of what art can achieve is the profound connection and intersection between the artist, the artwork, and the viewer. It’s not just about the tools and canvas; it’s about the shared narratives, the connections forged, and the joy found in every stroke”.

“Funky Flamingos” by Carol Moon

Carol’s artistic journey has taken her through many studios, exhibitions, and events as she’s welcomed the opportunity to develop and showcase her work. She’s participated in prestigious events (Art Prize of Grand Rapids, MI). While living in Nashville, she was selected to be a monthly participant in the Germantown Art Crawl and the Franklin Art Crawl in Franklin, TN. Her work has been on display at The Art Show Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, TN, and the Juno Beach Art Festival in Juno Beach, in addition to interior decor centers and various other exhibitions and venues. Her pieces have not only found their way into countless homes across the country, but have also attracted collectors and inspired many commissioned pieces. She continues to be featured and sought out for interviews as well, most recently for feature articles in both Shoutout Miami and 123Art Magazine’s online publications.

Recently Carol added to her creative base an Art Therapy Certification. She has a background in psychology, and experienced her mother’s 15-year progressive Alzheimer’s Disease. These things have lead her to an interest in helping those who feel locked inside, for whatever the reason, experience freedom through artistic expression. She’s excited to see where this could lead.

“Manny & Tee” by Carol Moon

“I believe so much of creating art is about the story. Sure, my story of how a given piece comes to be. But, it’s also about the viewer’s story, what they experience in the presence of my work is so important to me. It brings me so much joy when our stories come together, and I believe that’s what art can do.

Carol is a self-taught artist, inspired by color, God’s creation, and a profound bond with her mother. She creates vibrant works celebrating the simple things in life. Carol believes that color has the power to connect hearts and lives, enriching the human experience. Two decades in a West Michigan studio group provided mentoring, exposure, and involvement in ArtPrize of Grand Rapids. Relocating to Nashville in 2012, she joined an artist group under an internationally known mentor and Florida welcomed Carol Moon Art LLC to Zero Empty Spaces Studios. She has been featured in Shoutout Miami and 123Art Magazine, exhibiting at Residence Inn, West Elm, and  “Whimsy & Wonder” at the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County, highlight her achievements. Carol has been a featured artist at Zero Empty Studios in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, is a member of the Artists of Palm Beach County and the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County and continually looks for ways to connect with her fellow creatives and contribute to the larger Palm Beach County artistic community.

Her journey continues, resonating with viewers, social media followers, and collectors who appreciate the uniqueness of her artistic expression.

Call for Public Art Mural To All Artists Who Are Residents Of Palm Beach County , FL

This is a Public Service Announcement to share a CALL to Palm Beach County Resident artists for a Mural at the South Façade of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County (CCPBC).  The Rickie Report shares the details and urges artists to apply by April 19, 2024.

PROJECT OPPORTUNITY

The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County (CCPBC) requests qualifications from professional artists or professional artist teams to create an original public art mural for the back wall of its headquarters (south façade) located at 601 Lake Avenue. The theme of the mural should celebrate the concept of community: healing, unity, connections, wellness, and/or belonging. As the mural will face the Council’s new Art & Wellness Space, themes highlighting nature and tranquility are also encouraged. This call will consist of two parts: a call for qualifications followed by a selection of up to five finalists that will develop proposals for the mural.

PROJECT SITE

The Cultural Council serves as the county’s local arts service agency providing funding, advocacy, cultural tourism marketing, artist services, professional development, and a host of other activities and events year-round designed to support Palm Beach County creative professionals and cultural organizations. Its headquarters houses the administrative offices, three gallery spaces, a visitor information center, and the Roe Green Uniquely Palm Beach store. Immediately behind the building is a lot owned by the Cultural Council for arts programs, concerts, and other gatherings. Through this initiative, the space will be renamed the Arts & Wellness Space, and the mural will be a significant part of this rebranding and reimagining of the space.

In 2017, through the Canvas public art festival, a mural was installed on the back wall. The mural has weathered significantly and must be replaced. The Council’s back wall is approximately 54’W x 36’H and includes a roll-up type garage door that was previously included in the mural. CCPBC requests that the garage door is not included in the new mural design of approximately 1,000 sq. ft. The existing mural will be removed, and the wall will be repaired and primed before the start of the new mural project.

PROJECT GOALS

The artwork is of high artistic quality.
The design is expressive and echoes the theme of the project.
The completed mural serves as a visual identifier for Lake Worth Beach, the Cultural Council, and the theme of community and/or wellness.
The proposed work is appropriate for the site in terms of scale, design, and materials.

BUDGET

The commissioning budget is $40,000 and is all-inclusive including: design, artist fee, materials, installation, and insurance. Proposals that exceed the commission budget will be considered non-responsive and non-qualified. Artist teams must split the allotted budget if awarded. The Cultural Council will work with the selected artist or artist team on securing rental equipment (scaffolding and/or scissor-lifts). Additional budget may be allocated for these expenses.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to professional visual artists or artist-led teams age 18 and over who reside in Palm Beach County, Florida. Artists or artist teams (max two artists per team) must demonstrate their professional capacity to oversee the design and installation of a large-scale public mural.

QUALIFICATION APPLICATION

All interested artists or artists teams must submit their qualifications by uploading their application to the Call to Artists on Café. There are no exceptions.
Applications must contain all the following materials:

1. Professional Resumé: Resumés or CVs (limited to 2 pages) must be uploaded for each artist or artist team (artist teams should provide a separate Resumé/CV for each member). Teams must provide information for each team member, and one artist must be identified as the lead contact for the team. Any artist team selected through this call must retain the same composition of individual team members until the completion of the commission.

2. Statement of Interest: (max. 500 words) Statements should address the artist or artist team’s interest in developing a public art proposal for this specific commission and provide context to the conceptual and aesthetic approach, highlighting prior artworks, projects, or commissions of a similar scale.

4. Image Information: Title of work, artist(s), year completed, medium, dimensions, location. No composite images.

SELECTION PROCESS

Artist or artist teams will be selected through the following process:

1. Qualification Review. CCPBC staff will preview submissions for completeness and compliance with qualification requirements. Staff may reject incomplete applications or non-qualified or non-responsive submissions.

2. Selection. A selection panel consisting of visual art professionals, board and staff representatives from the Cultural Council, and a representative from the City of Lake Worth Beach will review artists’ qualifications. No more than five (5) and no less than three (3) artists or artist teams will be selected and notified as finalists for the call.

3. Concept Creation. The finalists will create a concept for the completed mural responding to the thematic requirements. The finalists will be paid a stipend of $500 each to develop their concept proposal. Finalists will also be asked to submit a full budget and timeline for the proposed project. Concepts will be on display for two weeks at the Council’s headquarters so that the public has a chance to view and provide general feedback. The selection committee will then reconvene and select the final artist or artist team (and the mural concept). The selected artist or artist team will have approximately three months to complete the project.

CRITERIA:

Selection of the final concept proposal will be based on the project goals and the following criteria:

  2. Diversity: Artwork is diverse in terms of media, cultural or historical significance, innovation, and creativity.

4. Artist qualifications: The feasibility of the proposed artwork is evaluated relative to the artist’s ability to complete the work proposed. Factors to be considered include the artists or artist teams experience, past projects budget, and timeline.

5. Artwork maintenance: Artwork must be designed and constructed for durability in the South Florida climate. Consideration will be given to proposals that consider sustainable and efficient methods in the ongoing maintenance of the artwork, including UV protection.

Each photograph reflects the feelings I experience, arrested by the fragile beauty and wonder that is nature expressed by its light, colors, textures, structures and patterns. Ultimately, it is my intent to raise awareness of endangered and threatened habitats and species that we stand to lose in the natural world if we are not careful” .

“Flamingo 2” by Phoenix

Her approach to photography and life is grounded in her philosophical belief that we are all one, and all interconnected. Her works have been honored in numerous juried exhibitions and showcased in 25 solo exhibitions, including Everglades National Park Gallery. Her photography has been featured in magazines and calendars worldwide and is found in more than 100 private collections internationally as well as corporate collections like the 22 pieces acquired by the Cleveland Clinic – Weston for the Women’s Center.

“Sweetpea” by Phoenix

“My love, my divine call to art, is to truthfully capture those moments when my soul is touched by the extraordinary wonder and beauty seen through my camera’s inner lens — from colorful bugs, smaller than a fingernail’s tip, to ever changing magnificent paintings presented every morning and night for humanity’s delight,” stated Phoenix.

Artist, Scott Jeffries

“S O U L       D O O D L I N G”

If you wonder how he creates his spectacular paintings, Scott Jeffries, who’s been doodling since childhood and still has his grandmother’s paintbox and brushes, will tell you “Don’t be afraid to paint outside the lines.”

Painting by Scott Jeffries

That describes not just his art but his life. Jeffries has reinvented himself as a professional artist after a series of yet unbroken high school swimming records, being an All Star Division 1 athlete, having a successful legal career as a Public Defender and more.

Painting by Scott Jeffries

Jeffries’ art begins with a total absence of sketching or planning, as it blossoms spontaneously into a beautiful melody of faces and shapes that create symphonies of color sometimes spilling over and off the canvas. And he will tell you his lack of a formal art education has allowed him freedom of artistic creativity  unencumbered by established norms. To browse his paintings and learn more about Scott Jeffries please visit www.scottyjart.com, on Instagram @scottart.

One Photo Collage celebrates a First Birthday, by Susan Oakes

“Clients send me multiple photos along with a deposit to get started. That begins a lot of back and forth between us until we arrive at the finished product. This process cannot be rushed but when it’s right we both know it!    Susan Oakes

Susan Oakes tells The Rickie Report, “When I create a photo collage for someone, it is highly personal and variable but there are certain guidelines I follow. Whether it is a memorial, or a celebration such as a birthday or holiday, it has to reflect the person or family authentically”.

Collage commemorating his love of Nascar, Las Vegas, and Family, and more!  by Susan Oakes

She explains that in gathering photos in the early stages, it is not a simple matter of just putting images together on a page. “It’s more like putting a puzzle together: I need more photos than I will ultimately use. Although we may love certain photos, sometimes they don’t quite work together well as a whole. It’s a highly visual thing and I typically go through multiple permutations before I’m satisfied”.

Susan’s experience and multifaceted educational/ vocational journey (degrees in Psychology and Graphic Design, retail manager, freelance graphic designer, Photoshop instructor and digital and natural media artist) all come into play as she creates a unity of design.

“One thing that helps this process is creating unity in the design. I’m taking disparate photos from different places, different times, different people and I need to make them into a cohesive whole. The background of photos is very helpful in this regard. As an example, if I’m doing a collage for a child, or someone looking back on their childhood, there may be photos of playing baseball, and other photos of enjoying the beach. Both the baseball diamond and the beach have something in common: sand. I can use this motif to blend the two images from different places together”.

“Many times I will use a backdrop of a sky, a field, greenery, or a common color in the photos to blend the images together and more importantly, to unify the piece. Other things I use to create authenticity are hobbies, places visited, favorite things they loved doing. I have used clip art or other graphical elements, such as sports team’s logos, objects or text to tell the story”.

Example of Susan Oakes using square edged photos and creating a smooth transition

“I can use rectangular photos with edges, but most of the time I prefer to have no straight edges showing at all, meaning I have to blend or morph the edges of different photos to create one smooth continuous image. Or, if I cannot do this, I might put another person or object in place to hide the hard edge of a photo. All of this is done in Photoshop though a combination of masking, painting and layering. Since I’ve been teaching Photoshop for over 20 years, I show my students how to do this type of compositing”.

About Susan Oakes:

Susan is a native Long Islander (which is immediately apparent upon meeting her) who emigrated to South Florida over 18 years ago. She is married to a very tolerant and supportive husband with two grown children (and two grandchildren!) who grew up with a geek for a mother.  Having never been a person with merely one goal, one purpose, she has traveled a multifaceted educational and vocational road including degrees in Psychology and Graphic Design, with experience as a retail manager, freelance graphic designer, Photoshop instructor and digital and natural media artist. And she still hasn’t decided what she wants to be when she grows up!  Her work and teaching demonstrate that art and technology are not antagonistic, but can coexist and should be used to enhance each other in new and exciting ways. Her digital work blurs the borders between photography, painting, and digital illustration to achieve her artistic vision.

In addition to working as a digital artist and graphic designer, she is also a graphics instructor. She teaches  InDesign and Illustrator, but most frequently, Photoshop. This behemoth of a program can be totally overwhelming for a beginner. Susan specializes in teaching new people (mostly adults) Photoshop at Palm Beach State College (in the Corporate and Continuing Ed areas) and also to private students.

One of the cornerstones of her classes is the belief that they must be tailored to the needs and goals of the students. Many adults come to these classes with tremendous variation in their experience and skills; it is Susan’s primary job to first ascertain what her students need and to help them attain their goals.

“I strive to promote a low pressure and welcoming atmosphere, geared to the needs and goals of adult students. I use discussions, demonstrations, videos, hand outs, and other materials to demystify Photoshop and help students to discover its endless creative possibilities for personal expression”.

Her work in “natural” or “traditional media” such as painting and drawing has a much longer history than her digital work, yet the two are inextricably bound and continue to influence each other. In Susan’s natural media work she began to experiment with alternative substrates and mediums, mostly related to watercolor and ink. Susan is an active member of the Wellington Art Society, Artists of Palm Beach County, and Palm Beach Watercolor Society. She is also a member of Kelby One (Formerly known as National Association of Photoshop Professionals)

Celebrating Brent McAhren’s Creations: A Master At Murals, Drawings And Set Design

Brent McAhren is not your stereotypical artist, honing one medium or subject matter. This Jensen Beach local artist is a muralist, a sculptor, and a teacher with a bachelor of arts in visual communication design from Purdue University.  You’ve seen his work when visiting the Elliott Museum, the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast, and the City of Palm City to name a few!  The energetic set designer for StarStruck Academy in Stuart sees everyday objects as potential  design materials as well!  Brent accepts mural and graphic design assignments on commission. The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.

“Will You Marry Me?” 3D People’s Choice Award Winner by Brent McAhren

Brent McAhren’s irregular path to becoming a mural artist is truly a life lesson for us all: Learn to pivot when “Plan A” is not working!  While studying industrial management at Purdue University in Indiana, he struggled with chemistry. His career counselor suggested he consider a design track instead. Business, homes, museums, and storefronts are lucky he did! After graduation, Brent created silkscreens for circuit boards (a layer of ink used to identify components, logos, test points and parts of the PCB).

Recent pet portraits by Brent McAhren

Brent’s work at the newspaper, Stuart News led to a job teaching Art and Photoshop at the Inlet Grove Community High School in Riviera Beach from 2004 to 2012.

Drawings and 3D creations by Brent McAhren

In 2013, McAhren switched gears and started creating set designs for Stuart’s StarStruck Theatre, which he continues today.  He told Stuart Magazine, ” I was introduced to the world of mural painting when Debbie Duval at the Elliott Museum posted on Facebook asking if anyone wanted a little black and white kitten because the kitten didn’t get along with her cat.” When the development director at StarStruck adopted the kitten, Duval happened to ask her if she knew anyone who could paint a mural for the Elliott”. McAhren was hired!

Mural at the Elliott Museum by Brent McAhren

Brent explains that The Elliott Museum wanted its mural to feel like a natural part of the environment as visitors explore the cars, plane, and motorcycles. Some of the museum staff suggested additions like a bluebird and a pelican. And the kitten made the mural too! This project required seven 10-hour days and is a seamless part of the exhibition.

Set Designs at StarStruck Theater by Brent McAhren

“Using materials that are considered trash to most, creating recycled amazing works of art. Foam couch cushions, cardboard and other mixed media are used to create 3-D art costumes and even large-scale set designs for Star Struck, children’s theater in Stuart”, Brent tells us. Winning multiple local art competitions and costume contests because of his unique application to a more realistic visual presentation, most of his artistic success comes from not limiting materials, thinking outside the box and unusual visual perspective. An eye for creative details adds to the excitement of each project he encounters.

Some recent murals by Brent McAhren

Since then, McAhren has painted local murals for companies including Shears of Joy and Shark Shack Sweets in Palm City and the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast in Jensen Beach. He has also been commissioned for work by the City of Palm City as well as private residences. Later this year, look for two upcoming murals—a project on Johnson Avenue in Stuart (across from the Wawa) and another in downtown Jensen Beach—which he is finalizing illustrations for now.

Gallery 14 is happy to welcome back mixed media artist Reed Dixon. Celebrating Nature: Paintings by Reed Dixon” once again showcases his bright, imaginative and captivating images of flowers and birds.

Reed Dixon’s “Tutti-Frutti”, acrylic painting size: 24 x 30

Reed currently lives and works in Boynton Beach, FL. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he studied graphic design and fine arts at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He was originally a Hallmark Card designer and illustrator. Later on, after spending years in the ad business (while always painting) Reed opened Dixon Graphics, a graphic design and fine arts studio. His work has been exhibited in the Society of Illustrators Show in New York City and for the past fifty years he has been widely shown and can be found in several corporate and private collections.

Reed Dixon’s “Windy Day”, acrylic painting size: 22 x 28

According to Reed: “ I call it imagery. By that I mean the end result is not necessarily a study of the subject, but how I feel the subject should look in the end.  I’ve always felt the need to experiment with paints, mixed media applications, colors, textures and subject matter. I’m never short on inspiration to capture what fascinates me.”
