The Watergate Hotel is celebrated for its chic and sophisticated ambiance that many guests adore, complete with contemporary rooms and historical elegance. Despite its prime location near Georgetown and key DC sights, some guests feel the prices don't reflect the value. The luxury amenities, including a spa and pool, receive high marks, although the minibar costs are noted as steep. Room experiences vary, with comfort and views often appreciated, yet some cleanliness and maintenance issues are mentioned. Service at the hotel is generally lauded for being exceptional and professional.

We chose the Watergate Hotel for our 50th Wedding Anniversary because we had spent our 5/12/73 wedding night in Room 1011 of the then infamous (Nixon, Watergate hearings, political history) hotel. We asked specifically for room 1011 for our 50th, and it was set aside for us. Check-in was warm, efficient, and congratulatory. The associate, Ahmed, even showed enthusiastic interest in the vintage (1973) bill and room service menu that we brought to the hotel for its archives. A lovely bowl of fruit and a plate of tasty macaroons along with a thoughtful handwritten note from Hotel Director of Rooms Matthew Deudne greeted us in our room. The views of the river, Roosevelt Island, Harbour, Georgetown University, and sunset were spectacular. The Top of the Gate late night views of the Watergate, Kennedy Center, sparkling lights of Key Bridge and Georgetown, river, and Venus in the skies capped off the wonderful day. The next morning our brunch at Kingbird was just as charming with a warm welcome by the restaurant manager (from the Netherlands), the professional wait staff, and the thoughtful complimentary key lime dessert with a chocolate *Happy Anniversary" plaque and prosecco. When we left, the cheerful doorman brought my husband a chair while we waited for the valet. We were thrilled with every special touch during our perfect visit.

My boyfriend and I couldn’t believe the customer service we received while staying at this fine establishment. Upon arriving valet parked the car, we never touched a door or our luggage. Every staff member was friendly. We stayed on the 12th floor and had a wonderful view of the river and also ordered room service the entire stay so we wouldn’t have to leave. There were robes and slippers provided and a satisfying walk in shower plus a little EXTRA gift in the room you have to stay to know what I’m referring to. Mini fridge was packed with goodies I would suggest Pepsi only because i prefer it over coke lol. I really felt like royalty during my stay. I wish I could’ve visited the spa but they were booked up for the weekend. Overall, I enjoyed every moment and would come again. Thank you all for the experience.

Dear dejaj601, Learning that you and yours so enjoyed your Watergate retreat makes us smile from ear to ear and we thank you for investing the time to share so many details of your visit. As you discovered, our team has provided every thoughtful amenity one could expect, from the robes to the spa-like baths. No request is too large or too small and next time you join us, we would be happy to ensure your mini-bar options are stocked with Pepsi products; if that is your preference just let us know in advance. Once more, it was a treat to welcome you to Georgetown and we look forward to you visiting again one day soon. Warm Regards, Pascal Forotti Managing Director

We stayed in the Watergate Hotel and thanks to American Express received an upgrade, $100 of credit and free breakfast or 2. Our room was on the 5th floor, but more about that later.

Lobby: Upon entering chances are you won't open a door thanks to the amazing doormen/bellmen. The staff at the front desk are very polite and greet you with a smile. The lobby area itself is expansive with a nice whiskey bar nearby (look up the igloos for rental, but they are pricey, too much so). On the lower level is a large restaurant and below that a gym and pool.

Room: We were in room 505. The room is very large with a king size bed, tub and shower, both in a combined enclosure (a bit weird, but it works). the bathroom itself has only one sink and if you need to use the toilet there is no separate door or wall to separate it from the shower and sink area, though there is a sliding door from the rest of the living area. the room has a wraparound balcony, but there is an office building right next door so you will likely want to keep the drapes on that side closed. The window facing the other direction has nice views of the river and Georgetown. The room comes with a coffee maker, sage, refrigerator and robes/slippers. The bed is very comfortable and there are plenty of outlets and single switch lighting for all on or all off. However, there are connecting rooms on both sides and we could hear people in the other rooms which we found annoying. there was also some sort of loud banging as if it was coming from outside in the middle of the night that woke us up a couple times. No idea what it was and it did not happen every night. We did have a problem with no hot water one day, but they fixed it pretty fast. Things break and how the hotel deals with it speaks volumes. There is plenty of storage space, though do not expect the drawers to hold very much, they are pretty worthless.
There is a desk to work at should you need somewhere to use a computer. Overall though we were happy with the room (it was good, not great) other than the items previously mentioned.

Running/Biking etc.: You are very close to Georgetown and the mall, so if you want to get a run in I recommend heading towards Georgetown and then run along the canal. You can go a long way and not have to deal with all the people around the mall. It is not a bad walk to M street either.

Restaurant: We only had breakfast there. They have a buffet or you can order off the menu. All the food was very good, especially the avocado toast and the service was also very good.

Overall, we would stay again but look for a different room, hopefully one that is a bit higher that doesn't have a connecting door. The staff is first class, the location is great, but the room is why I won't give it 5 stars.

Dear Stacey s, Greetings to you and yours and thank you for taking the time to share your thorough and thoughtful review. We are always delighted to know what our guests cherished most about their Watergate experience and learning that our colleagues left such a lasting impression makes us smile from ear to ear. We will be certain that your kind words are shared and celebrated with our entire team, especially those at the door. While this leaves us beaming with pride, we are sorry to learn that your room fell short of perfection and we apologize if a sold-out situation prohibited our colleagues at the front desk from offering a change in rooms. We appreciate this valuable feedback and we look forward to you finding a room you love the next time you make yourselves at home. On behalf of all of us, including our culinary colleagues in Kingbird, the pleasure was ours and we look forward to you visiting again in the months and years ahead. Warm Regards, Pascal Forotti Managing Director

First, let's discuss the ridiculous and absolutely unnecessary "resort fee" which includes Wifi and Spa Access. Give me a break. You can do better... by not charging that fee. This is NOT a resort. Wifi is free for anyone that steps foot in the building, just put in a fake email address and you're in. And the fitness center? Even a Holiday Inn Express has a fitness center.

As for the paper thin walls, we could hear the romantic couple next door all night long celebrating their nuptials and playing music. Not what I'd expect from a luxury hotel. When I called to the front desk they said "we'll send security" I just said "don't bother, they're busy and I would hate to interrupt - just move our room."

There are plenty of options for you to stay in DC, don't get sucked in to the "history" of the location. Save your money, and go elsewhere. We got a high pressure up-sell at check in to a room with a balcony. Seriously? It was 32 degrees outside. I'm not going to the balcony.

It's only redeeming quality? It was easy to walk to the National Mall.

Dear CueballJr, Greetings from all of us in Georgetown. As you can appreciate, our leadership team places great value in guest feedback as it allows us a chance to understand what guests most enjoyed and how the experience can be elevated even further. While we are pleased to read that our central address served you so well, we are sorry to find that our published resort fee left you surprised. Like many hotels in the city this fee is applied, though we pride ourselves on offering an endless list of amenities that are included in that rate. As your review notes, those amenities include complimentary Wifi, complimentary access to Argentta Spa, our indoor pool and baths and our state-of-the art fitness facility, our in-house bicycles which are still very popular given our mild winter, sedan service and more. We appreciate your added feedback and on behalf of all of us in Washington, we hope to one day welcome you again so that we can win your heart in full. Until then. Warm Regards, Pascal Forotti Managing Director

I’ll sum it up with this: if you’re really wanting the historical aspect, stay here once; otherwise come for a cocktail and stay elsewhere.

The luxury feel lingers, but it’s a little hazy as attention to detail and minor upkeep lacks. The screen door on the patio was damaged and inoperable; the room had a slight stale odor; not all the lights worked, and a digital screen built into the headboard to control the lights created an unpleasant glow that woke me in the middle of the night.

I was also surprised by the lack of in-room disinfecting wipes or hand sanitizer, which has been common at every hotel I’ve stayed at during the pandemic.

The “included breakfast” was a glorified continental breakfast; bacon was an extra $10 or a scrambled egg with sausage came in at a $25 surcharge.

The check-in process was absent of any kind of personality or explanation of the property, room types, pool operation, location of the elevators, etc. Check out was exactly the same — not even a question about how my stay was! This is where I would normally share this comments.

Definitely come for the cocktail bar, but at the prices they’ve decided to charge, just come for one. It’s a very interesting experience and the waitress was incredibly friendly and attentive.

Overall I’d recommend the bar, but if you’re looking for a true luxury hotel stay I’d head elsewhere.

I felt it was important particularly for business travelers that I write this review. I have stayed here twice on business, once for 6 days and once for 4 days. The pros: furniture is great, comfortable bed, extremely friendly and professional housekeeping and room service. They have 'embraced' their Nixon heritage in a cool way. The cons: there is A LOT to be desired on general customer service. Too many to mention over the 10 + days I have stayed here, but one example: one of the reasons I chose to stay here is the indoor lap pool. Went down to swim, technical issue, come back in 6 hours. So I called 8 hours later and no answer at spa, called front desk to see if pool was open. I was told "go down there and see for yourself." That one interaction sums up unfortunately the overall interaction with staff - with the exception of the very courteous housekeeping and room service staff. Please note business travelers: this is a hip hotel that has a lot of partying going on. Very loud from the bar downstairs that permeated the room most nights. One night there was a group of young people wandering my hall in their pajamas smoking joints and carrying a speaker around blaring music. When I called down, nothing happened. It is a fun hotel, if that is what you are after. If you need to sleep, would consider other option. On the spa - I had a massage one evening which was a decent massage, but the entire time there were people banging around outside the door cleaning and talking. For a several hundred dollar spa experience, definitely NOT tranquil. FOOD: I ate at both the Whiskey Bar and Kingbird multiple times. Good for small plates, but Kingbird does not live up to rankings. Excellent bar tenders at the Whiskey Bar and a great bourbon list. Would stay again if I was there for a party, not for work - location is excellent.

We'd passed this hotel several times walking from the Metro to the Kennedy Center when we lived in DC but work moved us to Ohio and we recently decided to stay there on a work trip back to town. Rates were competitive and what you got exceeded expectations. The pool/spas/steam rooms were outstanding at the end of the day! Our room had a stellar view of the river, bed was perfectly comfortable, combined shower/bath was large and enjoyable, everything was impressive.

We did a birthday dinner and all of our breakfasts at the hotel restaurant ($30/person breakfast was included in rate). Steak tartar was perfect, lobster salad, flatbread, and even a simple cheeseburger were special.

We were able to walk to everything we needed to do, including an easy water taxi from Georgetown to the Wharf and National Harbor regions. Metro is a couple blocks away as well.

We'll certainly stay there again when in town and I can recommend the Watergate workout hesitation.

We checked in on January 1st at 4:00 pm. Because they had over 200 checkouts that day our room wasn’t ready. So they sent us to the bar and have drinks on them. An hour and a half latter we finally got into our room. This would not have been so bad except that we had 5:30 dinner reservations in their restaurant and tickets to the Kennedy Center all to celebrate our 40th anniversary.

What really save the day was the kind and sincerely apologetic service we received from the desk staff, the bar attendant and the restaurant servers. We did get down for a quick dinner before the show. They brought glasses of champagne to toast and a beautiful platter with a dessert and Happy 40th anniversary written on it. When we got back to our room after the show there was more champagne and chocolate covered strawberries.

Throughout our 3-day stay the staff continued to be outstanding.

Although our suite was not particularly large it did have killer views of the Potomac and Georgetown Waterfront Park.

I would definitely recommend the Watergate.

We were excited to stay at the Famous Watergate Hotel for our overnight stay while in DC Christmas Shopping at City Center and Georgetown. When you pull in to the hotel it is impressive. Very massive in size as part of the complex is co-ops. Check-in was ordinary. The inside is dark feeling not much light. We stayed in a water view room and to be honest, the hallway and the rooms smelled like mildew/musty. Probably because of the age of the hotel? There was no gift shop or place to get snacks beside the bar inside the room. The bathroom was strange, you opened the shower glass door and then the shower was first and then the tub was inside the shower. We did have an igloo rented for 400.00 for a couple of hours at the Whisky Bar (outside) which was a really cool concept, heated and decorated nicely, however, it took us 30 minutes over our 6pm reservation to get seated because the group before us had not left and another 45 minutes to an hour to get waited on. After we were waited on the waitress assigned to our igloo came back only twice once with our food the other with our drinks and then we were told our reservation was up and still charged the full rental price plus 75.00 per person in drink and food over the rental charge and we did not get the igloo for the entire time. The following day at check out, we were told we still had a 25.00 credit per room for food or drink we did not get to use because we did not know about. We should have been told that at check in. The free breakfast buffet was good and the valet attendants were nice. I do not feel it was worth the money and would stay at The Melrose again or choose another hotel if I had to choose again.

Dear VBNative, We thank you for exploring all that awaits in our urban resort and we appreciate the kind comments regarding our valet team, morning breakfast and other points that left you inspired. Your feedback regarding our spa-like baths is also of value and while we understand that the wet-room concept is still relatively new, we do hope that your senses were captivated by the rest of the design. We are pleased to find that your visit included a reservation for one of our terrace igloos, though I am sorry to learn that we fell short of expectation in regard to that experience. Should your time allow, I am hopeful that we can coordinate an off-line conversation so that I can extend a more thoughtful apology to you and yours and take a moment to collect more detail about that experience. All staff were pleasant, welcoming and helpful. Room was more cramped than online pictures depicted. Would have preferred a room with a balcony and direct view of the Potomac. Next time I'll know what to ask for. Furniture in the lobby and room obviously fit the contemporary motif but were very low and difficult to get in and out of. Also, they were very small. I am tall and elderly and found the furniture most uncomfortable. I'm sure it is not a problem for young adults and kids. Drink and dining prices were a bit exorbitant but not unexpected given the location. We were surprised with a hotel that large that there was no entertainment. We were there on a Friday and Saturday night. When we asked if there was any musical, comic or other entertainment, the only thing happening was a tour of the Scandal Room by one of the porters. Actually, he did a good job of telling the story. For such a pricey hotel, it was just surprising there wasn't more going on for your guest. Highlights for us were the cleanliness of the room and the outstanding people who serviced the room, as well as those who worked the main entrance.
