The Watergate Hotel is celebrated for its chic and sophisticated ambiance that many guests adore, complete with contemporary rooms and historical elegance. Despite its prime location near Georgetown and key DC sights, some guests feel the prices don't reflect the value. The luxury amenities, including a spa and pool, receive high marks, although the minibar costs are noted as steep. Room experiences vary, with comfort and views often appreciated, yet some cleanliness and maintenance issues are mentioned. Service at the hotel is generally lauded for being exceptional and professional.

While some of the staff worked very hard to make the stay the very best enjoyable experience they three key incidents is the reason I would not recommend this hotel. First was the check-in. The room was not ready at 3:00pm and I was told I would receive a call in 30 minutes to complete my check-in. After 45 minutes and no call I checked, and the room was still not ready. After an additional 30 minutes we were assigned a room that was different than my reservation. First strike! The clerk that assigned us to the wrong room also kept my credit card and did not modify me I had to track it down later when I discovered it missing. Second Strike! The third strike came when the hotel staff gave us miss information concerning viewing of the New Year’s fireworks. This hotel is in a great location and the room was comfortable. But when you pay a premium you don’t expect the issues we had. I will find another hotel the next time I go for a concert at the Kennedy Center.

Dear David V, You are indeed correct to expect a flawless experience here at the Watergate, and we share in your frustration that several inconsistencies intervened. While we're glad you rested well in your room once settled, we regret that you were not properly informed of New Year Eve fireworks information. We do hope for the chance to earn your five-star approval one day. Warm regards, Pascal Forotti Managing Director

I recently hosted a surprise birthday event at The Watergate Hotel. I worked with The Watergate’s food and beverage coordinator, Thiana Anderson, to plan a surprise birthday party for my Dad’s 80th. Thiana headed up the event and on site planning, which included a cocktail hour for 25, in a private outdoor space at the whiskey Bar, followed by an exquisite dinner for 18 in the Kingbird Restaurant. Our of town guests were graciously offered competitive room rates allowing them the convenience of staying at the hotel for the party. They received VIP treatment thanks to Matthew Deudne. In addition, Matthew went above and beyond any ordinary ask and worked his magic to accommodate our unusual request, providing our guests with a special tour about the history of the Watergate and 1970’s scandal. This extra special tour, lead by Bellman Anwar, made the party go from fantastic to extraordinary.

Both Matt and Thiana worked through the weekend when they were off the clock. Thiana was hands-down, the friendliest and loveliest person I have had the opportunity to work with in a long time. This party took months to plan and Thiana was communicative and regularly in touch. There were several last-minute changes that had to be made and Thiana accommodated all of them with a smile. She was by my side the day of the event but “out of sight” from the start to the very end of the party, that went late into the evening. All to say our experience putting on this event at The Watergate Hotel was seamless and everything we wished it to be. The food and service at Kingbird was also exceptional, especially since the dinner party was a large group of 18 all at the same table.

I have received endless praises and thanks from all of the guests about how wonderful the birthday event was. I couldn’t have pulled it off if it had not been for the friendly, professional, and accommodating team, with special thanks to Thiana and Matthew!

Really wanted to love this hotel, but just can not recommend anyone go there. Do want to commend the valet, front door, room service and Fenny at the front desk on May 31 early morning. First of all, the lobby is small dark and cramped, so don't expect to feel welcome. The rooms are large, but ours did not have hot water for 2 of the 3 mornings and the bed was hard as a rock. The roof top bar was closed to due the weather, so we tried the Lobby bar - the prices are obscene.

We received a welcome letter and upgrade to a balcony room thanks to Amex but the room had no view, except of the old Watergate West building which looks about to crumble. The letter and the front desk failed to inform us there was no housekeeping. We were surprised when we returned from a day at Arlington Cemetery that no one had cleaned the room, removed towels, etc. We had just come from Brooklyn NY and Jacksonville, those hotels had housekeeping Blaming Covid is no excuse for lack of service while you are still charging full price.

We called the front desk for towels, they said housekeeping would come in the morning. They did not.
So we called again for towels and to report there was no hot water. The towels arrived, the hot water did not.

You need a car to stay here, there is nothing safe within walking distance as there is now a homeless camp between the hotel and Georgetown.

There are many many other options in DC - choose anyone - just not here.

Dear Jean, Thank you for your positive feedback for our valet, bellman, front desk and room service staff. Our team has been working hard to make guests feel comfortable and welcome as Washington DC fully reopens, once again. We are sorry that our past policy to offer limited, reduced contact, housekeeping was not communicated properly during your stay a few weeks ago. Our Top of the Gate rooftop is weather dependent, as it is a full open air venue and we apologize that it was not open during your stay with us. We take our service level very seriously and our staff has been informed of the issues that you encountered during your stay. Best Regards, Pascal Forotti Managing Director The Watergate Hotel

I stayed one week at the Watergate for business reasons and, taking into account that I paid around 430 USD per night for the cheapest room with no breakfast, I was not impressed.
Pros:
Nice quiet room with a view of the Potomac river
Great bed
Nespresso machine in the room
Lots of towels
Quality linen

Cons:
Steam room not working
System was down and therefore key cards were not working
Extremely expensive breakfast
Minibar prices were outrageous
Difficult to relax and enjoy the spa area because no one was supervising that guests comply with the rules. So there were small kids running and jumping into the pool disturbing other guests, a noisy couple listening to extremely loud music inside the jacuzzi, etc etc. Plus there were no loungers in the spa/pool area.
AC not working in the meeting room

Suite with adjoining room for the kids made it both romantic and family. I called ahead and they couldn't have been more professional or friendly, as they all were the whole time. We took out the provided bikes for a ride near the river walk and shopping in Georgetown is a walk away. The Mall was a short taxi ride. Breakfast buffet and dinner at the Kingbird were excellent in all regards. Hot tub/pool/sauna/fitness/dressing rooms were not to be missed and I will make a point to try the spa next time. Very clean in a classy modern design. High quality robes provided. Well-stocked micro-fridge. No microwave. Espresso maker, not regular coffee. Their TV channel shows history of the renovation, but, nothing of the scandal? I would have liked my kids to learn more of that. Couldn't have been more accommodating.

Dear 114lisas114, Greetings to you and your family and thank you all for joining us. We are thrilled to read that you took advantage of so many of the unique experiences offered within our urban resort, from our indoor heated pool to our Watergate bicycles, though it sounds like one key touch-point was missed, a tour of our “Scandal Room”. When you next join us, as we hope you will, we invite you to check in with our concierge team for more details on this daily event. The room associated with so much Watergate history features many artifacts and pieces attached to the scandal and we are certain that both you and your children would enjoy. Assuming the room is not occupied (it is available for an overnight stay), tours occur twice a day and we would be happy to have your family join us. Once more, we thank you for the rave review and we look forward to you joining us again in the months and years ahead. Warmest Regards, Pascal Forotti Managing Director

A trip to the Swedish embassy landed my husband & I a 3-night stay at The Watergate Hotel and our stay & visit was nothing short of fabulous! The staff greeted us with smiles and offered help, the room had a fantastic view of the river and the fluffy robes were perfect after the "million-dollar showers" several times each day due to record September 100 degree heat while spending our days walking the fantastic DC trails or riding the bikes the hotel provided us with, free of charge I might add! Everything "worth exploring" within walking distance from the hotel! Each day we were greeted with cold bottles of water as we returned to the lobby and buckets of ice were brought to our room. The pool was big enough for swimming laps! And the water jets felt great on our achy shoulders... The weight room stocked with cardio equipment and weight machines. We will definitely return to The Watergate for our next DC visit and will enjoy the 5-star luxury & perfect location it provides for all our daytime & evening adventures.

Our stay at the Watergate proves to outdo itself each and every time. The proximity to the Lincoln Memorial/Georgetown/National Mall is very convenient. My family and I were checked in a timely manner and provided with a 5 star welcome.

We had the lovely experience of interacting with Aziz (an absolute gentlemen) and Yab who helped with our luggage and valet. I'd like to also thank Matthew Deudne who ensured our stay was nothing short of fantastic.

The salt water pool was a hit for our toddler, hot tub was a bonus for the adults. Our room came with superb view of the Potomac - interior is very posh/elegant fitting for a 5 star hotel. Furthermore, our bathroom was nicely equipped with necessary toiletries in the case you have forgotten something. The bedside controls (lighting/climate) are a nice upgrade.

Our room service orders of late night cookie and breakfast we delivered in a timely manner with all the necessary condiments to make for a superb meal all within the comfort of our hotel room.

Upon checkout, we were assisted by Aziz, who helped us gather our luggage, he surprised us with a quick stop by the "Scandal" room which was what made the Watergate famous, a very cool experience to see where history took place in person. Aziz surprised our toddler with a few rubber duckies which was an absolute joy for our little one, he also provided us with a book on the Watergate scandal as an extra bonus!

Thank you Watergate Staff for a fantastic stay at your wonderful hotel - we will be back!

This hotel has a lovely indoor pool and sauna, which is frankly the only thing worth the steep resort fee. No chairs even at the pool, you can't lounge. Besides that, the pricing for everything is kind of obscene. We never enjoyed a drink at the lobby bar because of this. We ordered breakfast and would have to split one dish and a pot of coffee, and the bill would come to sixty bucks. We ordered room service one time on our last day and were charged about 60 bucks for an omelette. It's not worth it for what you're getting. A burger is forty bucks. It's just ridiculous, probably has some of the worst pricing of all of DC in terms of food and drink.

And I get it, that it's supposed to be five star. But the details, quality of food, and even cleanliness do not even touch the quality of a brand like the St Regis or the Ritz and it's honestly more expensive than both of them.

You're not really surrounded by many businesses that are close by when you stay here either. The gauging becomes excessive. 20 bucks for a pot of coffee at breakfast, when the menu reads ten bucks for coffee. Don't really understand the gauging. When I checked out it soured my experience there.

Now I've checked my credit card days later after expecting my refund, and I've realized that on top of the expensive $500 deposit I gave the hotel, I was charged again anyways for the one omelette and resort fee of five days of $240. I'm pretty annoyed by the whole thing, it's a huge deposit to begin with. This mistake shouldn't of happened, it should of been taken from the amount on hold. Not a five star experience.

The hotel is very nicely decorated with a very modern ambience. The location is very good, far enough from noisy places but close enough to walk to the potomac river promenade, georgetown or the national mall (at the lincoln memorial section). Everything was very clean and very well maintained, the room was spacious with a huge bathroom. I was expecting a bit more luxurious ammenities or installations, but it is ok. The roof bar offers amazing views - atmosphere facing the river at dusk. The portiers and bell boys were super kind.

Extremely nice Hotel with a great sense of humor! Shame that the restaurant and bar have no customer service or consideration. (Reviewed separately because the Hotel was nice and doesn’t deserve a bad review). Our room was gorgeous and overlooking the river. Confortable bed and pillows were perfect. Since we had a 45min wait to get breakfast on the restaurant (which was half empty) we ended up ordering room service which arrived in 25min and was perfectly delicious. Would definitely recommend the Hotel, but avoid the restaurant and bar at all costs! I’d like to note that the front desk tried to make it right.
