Father Vassey (Michael Rooker) has a problem. Using his two 9mm, laser-sighted cannons he's tracked down and killed the holders of a heretic ceremony meant to bring a demon into the world. Not just any demon, this one's raison d'etre is nothing less than uncreating creation. The problem is that Vassey is too late. The demon has manifested, escaped, and is now on the hunt for the soul of a young boy who is believed to be a saint, due to the stigmata he had at birth. The film is directed by Jamie Dixon, heretofore a special effects supervisor, who shows canny restraint where special effects are concerned. The shadowy demon of the title is depicted often by a fluid black cloud, which is functional without losing its eeriness or credibility. The acting is solid, never campy, though Michael Rooker sometimes feels out of place. And the climactic scenes, built up to with good pacing, are fraught with peril and excitement. All in all, this is a worthwhile effort for a first-time director, and that makes it one of the best direct-to-video releases I've seen in quite a long time. Although I wish I could locate the Bram Stoker story on which it is based. --Jim Gay

But this is, all in all, a pretty good horror film. There aren't really any points in the film where I'm terrified, but the story line remains solid throughout the film. My main complaints are the casting of Michael Rooker as a priest (even if he has a troubled past), and the special effects - which somehow won an award from an obscure award ceremony, Fantafestival. The Shadowbuilder himself really wasn't all that convincing.
Still, this was a horror film that began and ended with the same premise. It didn't deviate, and its characters didn't commit random acts of remarkable stupidity. It was a wholly believable story (in terms of being a movie, of course), and Kevin Zegers gave a good performance as the 12 year old that the Shadowbuilder wanted to possess.
One other complaint that I have - if Zegers's character is supposed to be this special person (I'll let the film explain why he is), why didn't he exhibit any special traits?
By the way, neither the DVD cover that Amazon has as its image, nor the actual cover that I received when I ordered it, has anything to do with the movie. Poor packaging, even though the cover I received was "cool". The one Amazon has depicts a blonde boy. Last I checked, and for his entire career, Zegers has been a brunette.
2 star: jumped my way to the end for the ending. Unwatchable, but interested in how this turd ended.
3 star: watched it all, but not happy about it. Nothing better to do.
4 star: I watched it, liked it well enough. Would never watch it again.
5 star: Great moving picture show! I'll watch it again, and maybe again in a few years.
It's no, Evil Speak, but it wasn't a bad movie.
The movie's stars are mostly well-known, led by Michael Rooker, Leslie Hope and Tony Todd, but everyone does a good job. Even the kids. Fun Fact: The two actors playing the elderly couple, the Buttermans, probably have the two most famous acting credits as they were the voices of Rudolf and Hermie the Elf in the classic "Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer" Christmas special from 1964.
The director is Jamie Dixon who directed True Lies and Deep Blue Sea, among other films, and he does a great job not letting this movie get cheesy or preachy. He does allow you to catch your breath from time to time, but keeps the story moving. Technically, there's not much you haven't seen before in movies like Schwarzenegger's End of Days, which did a similar story a bit better, but Shadowbuilder is a good couple of hours on a dark weekend night.
HOWEVER, THIS WAS NOT A 2018 FILM, BUT EARLIER FROM 1998, BUT WAS STILL CONTEMPORARY IN ITS SETTINGS. THERE IS A WELL KNOWN, THROUGHOUT THE CLERICAL WORLD, DEMON , NAMED ..........SHADOW BUILDER......, WHO BY VIRTUE OF SELECTING A TEEN UPON WHICH AFTER PROCUREMENT AND PERFORMING A RITUAL, WOULD OPEN A DOOR TO HADES. ALL THIS WAS ACCORDING TO STOKER. OUR HERO, A ROGUE PRIEST ARMED WITH WEAPONRY SEEKS THE CREATURE AND HOPES TO SAVE THE TEEN BOY, AND THE WORLD. THIS IS IN FULL HD COLOR AND IS A VERY WELL MADE FILM WITH BREATHTAKING SPECIAL EFFECTS. ROOKER IS IN HIS ELEMENT AS HE TEAMS WITH A SHERIFF TO KILL THE DEMON. THE MOVIE IS MADE SO WELL IT IS SUBTLY SUBLIME, AND VERY VISCERAL. THE DENOUEMENT. I.E. UNRAVELING, AND FINALE WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY. GET OUT THE 🍿 &🍕 AND ENJOY THIS FUN FLICK.
The supernatural Demon is Legion, who travels from perdition into everyday reality on a terrifying path of destruction and mayhem to possess a young, unsuspecting virgin boy of 12 years old who is born with the stigmata (marks of the cross of Christ on his side, hands and feet). Fear of the dark descends on the people of Grand River, as the Demon Legion is intent to sacrifice young Chris Hatcher (Kevin Zegers) on the altar at a church to possess the youth's pure virgin soul. The pure soul and virginity of the boy seemed symbolized by his hair that was turning from blond to brunette. The Priest, Father Jacob Vassey (MIchael Rooker) had hoped to prevent the emergence of the Demon Legion, but he is too late to stop the pentagram ritual that opened the door from perdition. Now it is a race against the sacrifice on the church altar by Fr. Vassey, the Grand River Deputy Covey (Tony Dodd) and others with light - be afraid of the dark. It required the superb acting of Kevin Zegers, Michael Rooker and other support actors to provide 5-star performance and production of this DVD movie.
Movie was ok that is why I gave it 3 stars being generous.
