2018-09-17 UPDATE: Today adding several FULL '81 Eps. (Ty St. Nick!)
** Here-in will be found all known available ''All My Children'' video recordings for the years 1980, 1981, 1982 (only 47 known available Eps/Promos/Clips). Agnes Nixon, the creator of All My Children, at one time requested that any person who has video taped copies of any AMC episodes, to please make them available for public viewing. Should more available episodes come to my attention, I surely will immediately upload them!**
The early '80s is considered to have been a "golden period" for the show and the "Golden Age" for super-couples. Younger characters, such as Greg Nelson & Jenny Gardner (Laurence Lau and Kim Delaney), Liza Colby (Marcy Walker), Liza's best friend Amanda (Amanda Bearse), Jesse Hubbard & Angie Baxter (Darnell Williams and Debbi Morgan), and a now-grown-up Tad Martin (Michael E. Knight), who was now legally Ruth & Joe's son, enter the scene.
The story-line involving Liza plotting to win Greg back after he leaves her for Jenny became a fan favourite, as was the Greg & Jenny and Jesse & Angie pairings. Jesse & Jenny's summer in New York City became regarded as one of the greatest story-lines in the history of the series. Meanwhile, the legend of "Tad the Cad" is born when Tad takes Liza's virginity, then simultaneously begins having sex with her mother, socialite Marian Colby (Jennifer Bassey), who eventually is sent to prison.
For older appeal, Jenny and Tad's natural mother Opal (Dorothy Lyman) was also added to the canvas, where she opens the Glamorama salon and spa. Opal greatly showcased the attempt of All My Children writer s at humour and satire. Also introduced in the 1980s, were powerful businessman Adam Chandler and his identical twin brother Stuart (both played by David Canary), the first arrival of members of the Chandler family. Adam became cited as one of the "most powerful male figures in television", which was contrasted by Stuart's kind, generous, and honest personality.
Erica begins to take on a larger-than-life role by the 1980s. This is evident with her writing an autobiography, "Raising Kane", and turning it into a motion picture. When her presumed half-sister Silver (Deborah Goodrich) accuses her of murdering Kent Bogard (Michael Woods, Lee Godart), her former lover and boss, she goes on the run, fleeing to the Hollywood Hills. She does this all while posing as a nun. Her forest encounter with a grizzly bear after she escapes a kidnapping attempt made by Adam is considered a memorable moment.
**ALL MY CHILDREN Recap of 1980 through 1982 Episodes**
Physical Copies of these early 80s episodes are few. **ALL MY CHILDREN RECAPS 1980 January through December**
Erica was forced to close her disco when the city rezoned the area, forbidding Erica to play music after midnight. Alone and despairing, the inimitable Erica didn't languish in defeat for long. She quickly regained her spirit and left town to make it as a movie star in Hollywood! With Erica gone, Tom's friendship with Brooke deepened into love. However, their budding relationship ran into a roadblock when Erica (her movie career a bust) returned to Pine Valley. Miss Kane immediately used a variety of ploys to successfully worm her way back into Tom's life -- and his bed! Erica promised Tom she would turn over a new leaf, but the allure of fame beckoned again in the person of cosmetics magnate Brandon Kingsley. Brandon offered Erica a top modeling job with Sensuelle Cosmetics, and fearing Tom would not approve of her budding new career, Erica lied about her frequent trips to New York. When he discovered her deception, Tom divorced Erica. Soon after, Tom and Brooke planned to marry.
Tom Cudahy's wayward brother, Sean, arrived in Pine Valley and seduced the married Devon McFadden. For Sean, the thrill was short-lived. When Devon became the pursuer, Sean lost interest in her and set out to seduce sexy nurse Sybil Thorne. Unable to compete, Devon turned to the bottle for comfort. She became an alcoholic. Reluctantly, Wally agreed to stay on and support Devon through her alcoholism, but the marriage was doomed.
In 1980, Cliff and Nina were reunited when Janice Rawlins admitted that she lied to Nina about Cliff fathering her baby. But Nina was reluctant to accept marriage to Cliff, or any man for that matter, because she was facing another overbearing problem. Nina's daddy, Palmer, had convinced his daughter that she was responsible for the long-ago death, in childbirth, of her mother, Daisy. Nina confided her fears to the family housekeeper, Myra Murdoch, who knew of a way to assuage Nina's guilt.
With Palmer away on a business trip, Myra arranged a séance and brought Daisy back to life - which was easy since she had never really died. She returned and took the secret identity of "Monique," and began an affair with the devilish Sean Cudahy. At the same time, Sean set out to work his charms on another Cortlandt woman - Nina. Still, nothing or no one could keep Cliff and Nina apart -- except Palmer who convinced Nina she was going blind! Fearing she would burden Cliff, Nina coldly returned the engagement ring. Cliff turned to Sybil Thorne for comfort. Ripe for seduction, Dr. Warner made love to Nurse Thorne, who became pregnant with his child.
Nina underwent a successful procedure to restore her lost vision and happily reconciled with Cliff. After marrying Nina in a beautiful outdoor ceremony on the grounds of Cortlandt Manor, a guilt-ridden Cliff could keep his impending fatherhood a secret for only so long. The truth came out and Nina left Cliff. Their marriage was over for now, but their love, though denied by both Cliff and Nina, still survived.
Kelly Cole was convicted and sentenced to death row for the murder of her manager, Eddie Dorrance, but was released from jail when Linc Tyler's painstaking investigation revealed the real killer to be Claudette Montgomery, who, while trying to flee, was critically injured in a car crash. As her life slipped away, Claudette confessed her crime. Kelly was free to marry Linc.
Billy Clyde Tuggle escaped from prison, then drugged and raped his wife Estelle, and later planned to bury her alive in a cemetery with her new love, Benny Sago. Chuck Tyler heroically overpowered Billy Clyde and rescued his dear friends. Benny married Estelle, even though she was pregnant with Billy Clyde's child.
Donna Tyler failed in her efforts to buy a black-market baby, and frustrated by her inability to give Chuck a child, she left him. Donna fell under the spell of Palmer Cortlandt, who convinced her to obtain a speedy Caribbean divorce from Chuck.
**ALL MY CHILDREN RECAPS 1981 January through December**
When Tom Cudahy's annulment from Erica went through, he was finally free to marry Brooke. Erica enjoyed her exciting new life in New York. Palmer relished the opportunity to transform his new wife, Donna into a woman of the world.
For others, 1981 would be a year filled with anguish and sorrow. Paul Martin and the Tylers grieved when their beloved Ann was killed by a bomb that had been planted in Paul's car. Brooke made the horrifying discovery that the woman she believed to be her mother, Peg English, was actually code-named Cobra, the leader of an international drug cartel. And over at Cortlandt Manor, Nina was painfully estranged from her beloved Cliff. Nina masked her pain with anger. At times, she refused to even acknowledge Cliff's presence. But Nina's trusted friend, Monique Jonvil, knew that she cared for Cliff because Nina told her so. Nina, persuaded by her argument, agreed to give Cliff another chance.
Sean Cudahy, working as right hand man to Palmer Cortlandt, discovered the truth that Daisy was alive -- but was not aware that she was masquerading as Monique Jonville. Cliff delivered Sybil's baby -- Bobby -- in Cliff and Nina's living room. Sybil took her newborn son home to her dreary boarding house where motherhood proved somewhat difficult. Taking money from Palmer, Sybil tried to use the baby as a pawn in another scheme to break up Cliff and Nina. "If you don't divorce Cliff, I'll give Bobby away to strangers. I swear it. Cliff will never see his son again!," she taunted Nina. Nina felt she had no choice. Going to Cliff, Nina announced that she wanted out of their marriage. This time, Cliff refused to believe her. Nina had no choice but to admit that Sybil was the culprit. That was all Cliff needed to hear. Promising to "kill her", Cliff headed to Sybil's apartment. And that's exactly where he found her -- -- dying from a gunshot wound. Within days, Cliff Warner was arrested for the murder of Sybil Thorne. At his trial, Monique Jonvil came forward to confess on the stand that she knew who the murderer was -- Sean Cudahy.
In the process, Monique had to admit the startling truth -- she was Nina Cortlandt's mother! Nina stood up in total, disbelieving shock, slowly approaching the witness stand and collapsed. Sean was sent to jail. Palmer's new wife, Donna, left him and, with his world collapsing around him, he went on a drinking binge that landed him in nearby Center City. Hit over the head, Palmer suffered a complete loss of memory. Needing a job, Palmer Cortlandt, one of the world's wealthiest men, went to work as a busboy at Foxy's, a Center City bar! This was a sad chapter in the great man's life. It would take months before he recovered. Before long, Palmer was back at Cortlandt Manor -- determined to win back his first love, Daisy.
At the Martin's, Ruth had still not gotten over the death of her son Phil. This time it was real. While on a government mission, Phil's plane exploded and he was killed, leaving Tara a widow with a young child, Charlie. Tara soon married another man, school psychologist Jim Jefferson and moved to Portland.
The Martin's problems were complicated by the behaviour of their teenage son Tad, whose pot smoking habit had turned him into bitter young man and a thief. When the pressure of life at home proved too much, he ran away. Soon after he left, his mother, Opal Gardner, an outrageously wacky woman, turned up on the Martin doorstep with her sweet and innocent teenage daughter, Jenny. Jenny met Jesse Hubbard, a streetwise black kid, who was the nephew of Dr. Frank Grant and his wife, Nancy. Jenny and Jesse struck up an instant friendship. They leaned on each other. Especially after Jesse nearly burned down his Uncle Frank's house when he carelessly left a burning cigarette in an ashtray.
The son of one of Pine Valley's leading families, the Nelsons, Greg Nelson was instantly captivated by Jenny, the girl from the "wrong side of the tracks." Greg's fascination with Jenny upset Liza Colby, a purebred, snooty girl whom Greg had known his entire life.
Erica was on top of the world. Life couldn't be sweeter for Pine Valley's princess until she discovered that her lover, Brandon Kingsley, had a secret wife! Brandon had no intention of divorcing his wife. Instead he privately decided to string Erica along for as long as he could. But Brandon soon discovered that he had competition for Erica - young millionaire, Kent Bogard.
ALL MY CHILDREN RECAPS 1982 January through December
In 1982, Liza Colby seized every opportunity to make Jenny feel unworthy of Greg. But Liza, and Greg's mother Enid, couldn't stop them from falling deeper in love. When Greg gave Jenny his class ring, Enid got down and dirty, joining with Liza to double-team Jenny. Together they manipulated the impressionable young girl into believing that she must break up with Greg -- for his own good. Heartbroken, Jenny wrote Greg a letter to break them up.
Jenny's friends -- and her mother, Opal -- could not understand why she broke up with Greg. They seemed so happy! Fabricating an excuse, Jenny told Opal she ended their relationship in order to pursue her modeling career, and went back to work at Foxy's to make money for her upcoming trip to New York. Angie Baxter knew better. She understood that Jenny loved Greg, and she told him so. Before long, Greg and Jenny were back together, which thrilled practically everyone -- everyone except Enid Nelson and, of course, Liza Colby.
"I'll make Jenny Gardner pay!," Liza fumed to her girlfriend, Amanda Cousins. And pay Jenny did, when both she and Liza vied for the coveted title of Miss Junior Pine Valley. Jenny appeared to win the crown, but when the votes were counted, Liza was declared the winner, with Jenny coming in a close second. When Liza's scheme was exposed, she retaliated against Jenny by telling her about her father Ray - the rapist.
Stunned by the horrifying truth, Jenny paid a visit to her father in jail, and was so upset with the reality of the despicable nature of her family that she fled immediately for New York.
In Milan, Erica and Kent made love, and she made certain that Brandon found out about it. However, she relented upon her return to New York, begged for Brandon's forgiveness but he eventually left for Hong Kong.
While honeymooning in Switzerland, Palmer and Donna were surprised to run into Chuck and his new girlfriend, Melanie Sawyer. During a storm, Chuck and Donna took shelter in a cave, and made love. Back home, Donna was thrilled to learn that she was pregnant. "I'm going to have Palmer's baby," she gushed to anyone who would listen. Unfortunately, Myra and Daisy were listening all too closely. They knew the truth that Palmer was sterile. The baby must belong to Chuck.
The mousy Silver Kane arrived on Erica's doorstep, claiming to be her half-sister. Busy with her many pursuits, Erica allowed Silver to stay on with her as her assistant. As time went on, Silver dropped her mousy exterior and grew more beautiful before Kent's eyes. Silver set out to get her claws into Kent, all the while convincing Erica that she was indispensable to her.
Growing despondent with his failure to find work, Mark Dalton fell more deeply in lust with young student Pamela Kingsley. Things took a turn for the better when a New York producer took interest in the new play that Mark had written. After the play's rousing success, Pam and Mark celebrated by making love for the first time. Days later, they met again. Behind Ellen's back, the torrid affair flourished. Soon realizing the implications of his actions, Mark broke off the affair. Despondent, Pam took an overdose of pills, and recovered, but not before Ellen learned the shocking news of her husband's infidelity. Ellen confronted Mark about the affair, and when he admitted to it, they separated.
When Liza falsely charged Jesse with rape, he ran away and joined Jenny in New York. Back in Pine Valley, Greg pined away for his lost love. Jenny and Jesse spent the summer together in New York as good friends, as each of them dearly missed their true loves, Greg and Angie.
As the months passed, Palmer grew progressively more repulsed by Donna's pregnancy and he made love with Daisy. Later, Donna gave birth to Palmer John Cortlandt, and she asked Chuck and Carrie to be the baby's godparents -- to Palmer's great annoyance.
While Cliff was busy at work, Nina found herself enjoying the company of co-worker Steve Jacobi. Atop a bear-skin rug, they succumbed to their passion. Nina vowed that it would never happen again, even though her attraction to Steve continued to grow more intense. Even Cliff noticed a difference in her, attributing it to all her hard work
.
Jenny returned from New York and on Christmas Eve, Greg proposed. Jesse and Angie resumed dating as well, despite her father's strong protests.
Ray Gardner continued to try to get back at the Martin's. After he blackmailed Opal into giving him a job at the Glamorama, rotten Ray busied himself with concocting a bomb in the back room. The bomb exploded accidentally, injuring Ray. After Joe operated on him, Ray claimed to be blind.
