Channel’s Overview

The history of WRC-TV goes way back in 1939 when Radio Corporation of America decided to start an experimental TV broadcaster, W3XNB. On 23 December 1941, the station’s construction permit was approved for the first time on channel 3 with calls WNBW. It was reflecting the “NBC Washington.” On 29 June 1942, NBC demanded to cancel the permit, and channel 3 transferred to Harrisonburg, Virginia.

WNBW was relicensed on 27 June 1947 (this time on Channel 4) and hit the air once again. Channel 4 News Washington is the 2nd oldest TV broadcaster in the area. The first one is WTTG, which started services in January 1947, only six months before. The station’s calls were flipped to the current one WRC-TV on 18 October 1954,. The move was made to align the station to its sibling radio. In 1995, WRC-TV (NBC 4 Washington) asked a puppeteer to host a puppet show for the channel. Following that, Jim Henson created a first series ‘Sam and Friends’ featuring the ‘Muppets,’ and eventually started Jim Henson Company.

Telemundo declared in Sep 2017 that they are deciding to introduce a new Telemundo O&O channel WRC-TV. Since then, the tv broadcaster is serving under the management of NBC owned Television Network and providing services to the community of Washington DC.

The transition from analog to digital signals

On 12 June 2009, NBC 4 Washington terminated its analog signals at VHF CH 4. The same date when FCC ordered all full-power TV channels to transit into digital signals and live stream.
