10 Best Things to Do in Washington, D.C. in January 2020

December 23, 2019

It's the beginning of a new year (and a new decade!), so start it off right with some family fun. From the much-anticipated opening of the National Children's Museum to a slew of shows for kids (everything from Narnia to Daniel Tiger), there are plenty of excuses to get out of the house this January in Washington, D.C.

1. Head to Encore Stage & Studio to see Narnia, the action-packed story from C.S. Lewis, from January 10 to 19. Keep in mind that the musical is recommended for ages four and up. Adults $15, children $12.

2. Catch Mouse on the Move at Imagination Stage starting January 11. The show, perfect for little ones ages one to five, follows the store of Nellie and Amelia as they venture to the moon. Kids get to participate, too, thanks to a host of multi-sensory activities. $12.

3. Watch as the top step teams from across the country show off their fancy footwork in Step Afrika! Step Explosion on January 12 at Strathmore's Music Center. They will also demo a portion of their new work, Drumfolk. $35-$75.

4. Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr's legacy at Port Discovery Children's Museum's Be the Light weekend from January 18 to 20. Take part in programs that help children understand the positive impact their actions can make on the world. $17.95, under 1 free.

5. Attend a NSO Music for Young Audiences concert at the Kennedy Center! On January 18 and 26, kids can listen to tunes created by percussion instruments and the violin. Pre-show, there will be a musical instrument "petting zoo." $20.

6. Big news for Daniel Tiger fans! Daniel Tiger Live is coming to the Warner Theatre on January 19. Shows are at 2 and 5:30pm. $31.50 and up.

7. Monster Jam rolls into the Capital One Arena on January 25 and 26. These massive trucks are super loud so bring earplugs for the littles. $20 and up.

8. Ring in the Year of the Rat with the Freer, Sackler and Ripley Center on January 26. There will be food, performances, and art from China, Korea and Mongolia. Free.

9. Get tickets for Spy Fest at the International Spy Museum on January 26 from 6 to 9pm. Take part in mini-missions, see demonstrations by the experts and try spy-skill challenges. $16.
