James E. "Jim" Sutton, 79, of Wapakoneta, died 10:31 p.m., Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, at Mercy Health- St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, with his family at his side.
He was born May 30, 1942, in Lima, the son of Elmer and Betty J. (Shields) Sutton. His father is deceased and his mother and step-father, Betty and Ray Helmlinger are also deceased.
On Sept. 26, 1964, he married Carol Dicus, and she preceded him in death on March 1, 2008. Then on Nov. 3, 2011, he married Jeanne M. Stewart, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 2022.
Survivors include two children, Christina (Ray) Perez, Abernathy, TX, and Paul (Jennifer) Sutton, Huntsville, AL; step-children, Rose Carey, Wapakoneta, Web (Paula) Carey, Piqua, Kim (William) Cummings, Belle Center, OH; grandchildren, Jason (Larissa) White, Kayla (Bob) Duncan, Lauren (Jason) LePage, Jesse Perez, Caleb Sutton, Lucas, Garrett and Allison Cummings, Ryan Carey, Tiffany Deering, Dustin Mullen, Brandon Montgomery, Catosha Smith; great grandchildren, Audrey, Madeline, Caroline White, Berkley and Easton LePage, and nine great grandchildren; siblings, Mary (Ed) Fisher, Wapakoneta, Dale (Sue) Sutton, St. Marys, Carolyn Berry, Cridersville, Sharon (Carl) Vandemark; Ruby Allemier, Delphos, OH; a sister-in-law, Janet Helmlinger, Waynesfield, OH; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by an infant son, James Robert Sutton, and brothers and spouses, Charles (Glenna) Sutton, Arthur Gene Helmlinger, Dennis "Mike" (Linda) Sutton, and a sister, Penny Ward.
Jim retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service, having served from 1962-1992. He also owned and operated the JS Handyman Service. He was a member of the First Church of God, Bellefontaine, OH. His other memberships included the Fleet Reserve Association, the Retired Enlisted Association, Handyman Club of America, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Amvets, Post #333, the American Legion Post #330, and the V.F.W. Post #8445, Wapakoneta.
Joint funeral services for Jim and his wife, Jeanne Stewart, will be 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, at the Eley Funeral Home & Crematory, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta with Pastor Gary Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, and 1 hour prior to the service, Monday at the funeral home.
Jim's burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima, where military rites will be conducted. Jeanne's burial will be at a later date in the Cedar Point Cemetery, Pasco, OH. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Condolences may be expressed at eleyfuneralhomeandcrematory.com.
