    Good day out
Nice English Heritage castle & grounds on the Kent coast a short drive from Deal. This 16th century Tudor coastal fort is fully intact & refurbished as a residence of the Warden of the Cinque Ports. So it’s part fort, part country mansion & there are some interesting artefacts & a small museum across several rooms dedicated to the Duke of Wellington who died here in the 1850s. The real attraction here though are the great gardens & woodland trails with childrens play features scattered in the woods & sunken quarry gardens. There are two cafe eating areas, a picnic area ,toilets & a new education room facility. A very pleasant place to spend half a day.

    Definitely Worth A Visit
A very interesting historical castle and the volunteer staff all very helpful and informative. There is a bedroom where Queen Victoria slept in on one of her visits. The cafe is very good especially for jacket potatoes and salads. The gardens are well maintained and a ‘special’ is the tropical plants in the hothouse. Visitors can go down steps and walk around the grassed moat which is also planted up. Another attraction is a further part where steps lead you down to a large dell where there are large trees and paths and logs laid out almost like an adventure playground. Not suitable for pushchairs but older children would enjoy. At the top are several original cannons with plenty of chairs to sit on and look out at the sea.

    Interesting place to visit
Lovely walk along sea front from Deal to Walmer castle, found it very interesting to see difference from purely military Deal castle to one lived in and converted over time. Gardens beautiful. Well worth a visit.

    16th Century coastal fort
Beautifully maintained castle, devoted in lots of ways to the Duke of Wellington who defeated the enemy at the Battle of Waterloo. In his study, there is his camp bed which he took everywhere with him (even No. 10 Downing Street when he became Prime Minister after his soldiering had finished), plus the chair in which he died! There is also his writing desk which could be raised to alleviate his bad back! Amazing! The volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The grounds are also very beautiful and interesting. The Queen Mother's Rose Garden is a sight to see. We had tea in a lovely little cafe in one of the greenhouses. We fed a very tame robin which followed us. What a fabulous day at Walmer Castle! Highly recommended!

Lots to learn here is the Duke of Wellington is your hero
One of Henry the Eighths many fortifications around the south coast. The inside of the house is very interesting as it has a lot of original Duke of Wellington artefacts and history which I wasn't aware of. He died there. The grounds are well kept and lovely- what is unique about Walmer is how much of the interior is original, in other words it hasn't been reconstructed as is the case with many other NT and EH places. For example Wellingtons boots are there + the chair he died in.

    A lovely day out
Lovely day out. Beautiful gardens and well laid out woodland walk, including play areas for the children. There was a very helpful and informative gentleman in the house itself and I appreciate the way he was with my young children.

    Great Volunteer Staff
The castle has some great exhibits & history both long ago & quite recent. The gardens are lovely & you could easily be entertained for an afternoon. However, what makes this experience great was the volunteer guides. They had so much interesting information about Walmer castle, the guides were chatty, friendly & willing to give you a talk about lots of things inside the castle, their delivery of these talks was great, not stiff & informal but more warm, like you were having a chat. We found this style of talk much more interactive & informative. Thank you to the staff at Walmer Castle for such a great visit.

Always love the gardens, the room attendant was a pain!
Always pleasant here, beware of wasps in August! Have been visiting for many years love the gardens, the 'keyhole' in the vista has been re-instated in the trees to the west, plenty of colour in the gardens. Got pestered by a room attendant who would not get the message to just leave me to look myself. Imparted wrong historical information regarding the Iron Duke, I knew more than he did, I had to walk off!! Spoilt the house visit entirely.

    Lovely gardens
We visited Walmer castle after a visit to Dover and it was a surprisingly interesting place, we had also planned to visit Deal castle which is a few mins away but would have spent longer here as more to see. The castle has a few state rooms to look at and exhibits about the Duke of Wellington which we didn't realise. Gardens were very nice and they have a couple of small play areas too which was good as we had younger kids with us, they had activity books as well. Overall a lovely place to explore and hadn't realised the late Queen mother used to visit often.

    Walmer Castle is wonderful!
The castle is full of interesting items and info about Duke of Wellington. The grounds are stunning... full of beautiful and unusual plants particularly in the dry moat. I really liked seeing the kitchen garden in particular. Staff were very welcoming. Recommend stopping at the tea room for a hot drink and slice of cake. This is an English Heritage site - entry is free to EH members.

Drove for 30 minutes to get there after booking online and paying £25.20 for 2 x Adults to look around. Tickets and email said entry to Walmer Castle & Gardens. When we got there the castle was closed. We wanted a refund as £25.20 was too much to walk around a bit of grass!
English Heritage have said that the tickets are non refundable - had to escalate a case via paypal to get the money back - AVOID!

We had booked tickets to the Castle and gardens. On the morning we were going we had an email to say this has been cancelled for opertional reasons- the castle was closed. We went anyway , hoping to get into the gardens. People who had bought a gardens only ticket were being let in but we were told to rebook on our phones and that nothing could be done otherwise- despite it being 24 degrees and having our 85 year old mother in law with us, who is an EH member. After bitterly complaining about this , the poor harrassed staff did it for us, but I was really appalled by EH's total lack of gumption. I could not fault the staff, but English Heritage get your act together! of course we understood there were issues but why cancel our entire tickets and then expect us to rebook at the gates? Once in the gardens were absolutely beautiful; it was just a shame it was such a hassle to get in- especially after having taken the trouble to book .

With Covid keeping the castle closed to visitors we spent a lazy sunday afternoon strolling round the mixture of wild and formal gardens listening to live music played on the lawn.
The gardens have a wide range of play areas for children, and wooden sculptures to find.
Their is also a cafe selling drinks, and food made from produce grown in the castles gardens.

First of all, let me say that I absolutely love Walmer Castle and grounds, it's a fantastic place to visit and can't fault the place itself. Sadly I'm moved to write this review due to the appalling facilities we've recently experienced there. We usually go to the café inside the castle, but on a recent visit it was closed for some reason, so we went to the tearoom in the garden. The range of food offered was good, but service was absolutely shambolic, disorganised and clueless. I ordered a 'Queen Mother's Cream Tea', as it was a special occasion. The queen mother would turn in her grave. Scones displayed at the very front of the counter, with no cover, and everyone in the queue coughing and breathing on them, and at just the right height and angle for small children's grubby fingers. The scone was plonked on a paper plate, and no cream or jam offered. We had also ordered four teas. For some unknown reason, that totally defies logic, the staff take it upon themselves to pour milk (one type available only) into customers ' tea (served in paper cups), without asking first how much milk the customer would like,or even if they would like milk at all. So four of us, who all take vastly varying milk in our tea, were all presented with' one size fits all' very milky tea. Never, ever, have I come across such a practice, and two of us couldn't drink it. There are no trays, so by the time we had carried each boiling hot paper cup individually to our table, the next lot of customers were at the till, leaning over and breathing on our food items and we had to ask them several times to move a bit so we could pick them up and carry them to our table. My scone still sat there looking as miserable on it's paper plate as I now felt. I had to interrupt the server who was now serving the next lot of people, to ask how to get cream and jam. Her response 'Oh, did you want cream and jam with that?'. Considering I'd ordered a cream tea, I wouldn't have thought it was rocket science to work that out. She finished serving the other people fron behind me in the queue (a very slow, lengthy process, as they were a large party) before reaching for my jam. By now my scone had been coughed on by multiple people, my disgustingly milky tea was stone cold, and i had lost the will to live. The sorriest excuse for a cream tea ever. Total waste of money. While at our table, it began to rain. At least we're inside, we thought. About five minutes later rain started dripping, then pouring, through the roof onto our table and the table next to us. We gave up on our horrible teatime 'treat' and went back into the gardens, which are absolutely gorgeous. Then I went to the loo. Two tiny, filthy cubicles you can barely squeeze in and out of, shared by men and women. Nowhere private for ladies. What the hell is that about, Walmer? The sink area was flooded too, making it an all round squalid experience.

We spent a really lovely 4 hours with our 3 kids of 5,3 and 1 exploring all the gardens and walks... The kids absolutely loved the woodland walk with loads for them to do including wooden climbing equipment and tunnels/trees hollowed to create places to explore and climb through, they also really enjoyed the Grove lots to use your imagination on!

We took our own picnic which we sat and ate in the large oval lawn, plenty of space for the kids to run about while we relaxed and took our time with lunch.

We also bought the best take away cappuccino I've ever had from the little shop cafe, the two girls were very helpful and friendly as were the lady and gentleman who welcomed us on entrance and offered recommendations on areas the children would enjoy and good photos to take.

All in all we will definitely go back as the kids would love to see inside of the castle once it's all open again but it was well worth the time we spent outside.

We went for an afternoon and got there just after 3 thinking we'd have 2 hours to closing. They charged us full price on entry but didn't mention the cafe or garden would close early! We got to the cafe at 4.20 and told we couldn't have anything as they had cashed up the till. Still lots of people eating and drinking but clearly the staff had decided they were done for the day. Lady started ringing the bell in the gardens for people to leave at 4.30! We questioned it when we saw her walking round and no apology just that they need to start getting people out! The whole experience of pleasent Gardens and castle was ruined by staff hurrying us up to get out. Also real lack of signs of which way to go to get to places and they had run out of maps. We were thinking of becoming members but not based on this experience.... We'll stick to National Trusts properties in the future where staff are always friendly and welcoming and don't kick you out or close early!

Had a lovely time at Walmer today. It was the first time we had visited and was very impressed. Obviously, in this post covid world, things are a little different, however, English Heritage are doing their best to make sure everyone has a enjoyable and safe visit. We booked the tickets an hour before we arrived, were welcomed by friendly and knowledgeable staff and volunteers and spent a few hours walking around the beautiful gardens, watching fish, Robins and squirrels play whilst making the most of some wonderful photo opportunities. Would also like to shout out to the team members, who's amazing act of kindness, completed a 5 year mission for us, thank you

I visited on a cold day, but still enjoyed my time here. It was quite busy even though it wasn't a nice day. I'm assuming it's because it's only open on Saturdays and Sundays during the winter. Anyhow--the castle is nice, though not at all what I expected with well-appointed, cozy rooms. I especially liked the brightly painted hallway. The grounds would be beautiful during the spring and summer. Definitely worth a visit, though kind of pricey. The cafe was filled to the brim with nowhere to sit inside because of the poor weather. Not easy to get to from the train station on foot. It was a relatively long walk through town.

Loved our visit to Walmer Castle today! In August 2021 we joined English Heritage at Deal Castle and our visit to Walmer Castle was such a strong contrast! There is a wealth of history at Walmer but we would recommend a visit to Deal Castle first, we are really pleased we visited the castles in that order! The cafe was super too. A limited but excellent choice, we particularly enjoyed today's Leek and Potato soup served with a warm, brown baguette. Getting back to the Castle the guides in each room were SO informative and we are pleased we bought the guide book at just over £5 as a souvenir. Thank you to everyone involved.

Beautiful Gardens, I found inside was beautiful but nobody wearing a mask and people coughing everywhere. With covid still being present I would have thought it may have been implemented that you must wear a mask especially in such and enclosed area. I didn't see all of inside due to not feeling safe with people coughing without a mask.
