Product Description
Avast, mates, and heed a pirate's tale. Billy Bones, bless his cursed soul, has hefted his cutlass and grog for the last time, leaving behind scarcely a doubloon. Aye, but he has left a map to a fabled, buried treasure.... The unforgettable stars of 1931's The Champ reunite for a rousing adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale. Jackie Cooper is Jim Hawkins, a lad living the kind of adventure every child dreams about. Treasure map in hand, Jim and his backers set sail for realms and riches unknown aboard the Hispaniola. But beware, me hearties: Notorious, one-legged Long John Silver (Wallace Beery) has signed on to the voyage by posing as a cook. Will the treasure fall into his scheming grasp? Will the Hispaniola soon be a-flying the dreaded skull and bones? Drop anchor and watch. A pirate's life for ye!

For many people, this 1934 version is the definitive Treasure Island: the great chemistry between Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, the rousing pirate anthems, and the stubborn parrot on the shoulder. The pairing of the actors was a cinch, coming three years after their tremendously popular teaming in The Champ. Cooper plays Jim Hawkins, the English boy who discovers a treasure map amongst the possessions of one Billy Bones (Lionel Barrymore in a robust extended cameo), a pirate visitor to the Admiral Benbow Inn. Beery, indelibly, is the one-legged, parrot-toting seadog known as Long John Silver, who joins up on the treasure-hunting expedition by pretending to be a humble cook--though the audience knows he is a fearsome pirate captain. Victor Fleming was just the right director for this manly voyage, holding the MGM luster at bay and allowing the crew of characters actors (among them Otto Kruger, Lewis Stone, and "Chic" Sale) to find their sea legs. At times, the relationship between Jim and Silver is closer to The Champ than to Robert Louis Stevenson's marvelous novel, but it's still true in spirit to the bond between boy and surrogate father. The story has been remade many times, notably in 1950 with Robert Newton as Silver, but this one inspires the longest memories. --Robert Horton

This is an excellent transfer of this fine film. Very sharp, wonderful tonality, and with very little dust or dirt.... very nice indeed. The audio is crisp and clear as well. I will say that in some of the darker scenes the grain does show a bit, but that's such a minor thing... truly, I'm amazed at how good this old film looks.
Maybe it's because I feel like a kid again when I watch this film, but it has everything I could would want for a Saturday afternoon film.... adventure, one legged pirates, and buried treasure on a far-away island....... wow!
I do understand and sympathize with some of the folks here who felt this wasn't true to the book, but I've always felt a good movie should be able to stand on it's own, and this one does that just fine. The pacing is fairly quick for an older film, with no dead or slow spots, and the many fine actors do a great job of developing and portraying their characters.
As far as Jackie Cooper's acting goes...... well, for me that is one of the highlights of the film, so it just goes to show that sometimes it's merely a matter of taste.
If you are a fan of well done older films, then I can highly recommend this as one of the best. Good clean fun for the whole family!
From an "viewing pleasure" perspective, this version included one of the worst characterizations of Jim Hawkins I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few. In a (poor) attempt I believe to act like Shirley Temple, Jim pouts, whines and cries through the entire movie, with extremely juvenile lines. Even the defiant speech he gives to the pirates after being captured sounds whiny and childish. He is also far less intelligent than Jim was in the book or in other film versions, believing even the most obvious of the pirates' lies.
Speaking of that, Long John was also less charismatic and intelligent than I expected. The pirates got away with their scheming as far as they did more due to the stupidity of the "gentry" than because of any cunning on Long John's part, and Long John seems more like just an average poor sailor than the intelligent, cunning Long John most people are used to.
Most of the other roles were very well played, Ben Gunn and the squire in particular were excellent, but their characters were rather dim to begin with. Overall, the film was reasonably true to the book, and interesting from a historical perspective, but bogged down by the general low IQ level of the characters. If you're looking for a film that's accurate to the book and actually fun and exciting to watch, I suggest the Bale/Heston version.
