BCSA Annual Dinner & 20th anniversary celebration (18 Oct 2019)

Dear Chevenors and Friends,

Greetings from BCSA!

⋯⋯

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the foundation of BCSA and the 35th anniversary of the global Chevening awards. To celebrate BCSA’s achievements in bringing together a growing body of exceptional professionals, leaders and talents, we request the pleasure of your company at the BCSA Annual Dinner.

The Annual Dinner is a fine tradition of BCSA that offers a unique occasion for our alumni, friends and partners to network and to meet representatives from the British Consulate General Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a unique presence – it is a beautiful harbour, an international financial hub with good mix of Chinese and Western culture, and a special administrative region with rights and freedom enshrined in the Basic Law within the territories of China.

Recent political events in Hong Kong, deemed the largest since the 1997 handover, have led many to ponder the city’s future. There have been instances which are widely seen as challenges to the long-standing beliefs and core values of Hong Kong.

Against this backdrop, our distinguished speakers, legislator Mr Michael Tien and entrepreneur Mr Ricky Wong, will share with us their perspectives and insights into what social, political and economic issues and opportunities lie ahead for Hong Kong.

Last Saturday, we had our drama appreciation event and backstage visit for “The Rainbow Troops”. We got 16 scholars and friends including Shenzhen and Guangzhou scholars joining that night.

Pursuing dream is never easy as the children in the drama thirst for education to get out of poverty. The participation of disabled drama artists also helps us appreciate the talents and potential of each individual no matter what circumstances we are at.

Thanks to Jo Ngai, our Chevening alumnus, for arranging for us this moving drama show and exciting backstage exploration. We all had a great night with better understanding on drama operation and social inclusion.

**BCSA drama appreciation event & backstage visit - "The Rainbow Troops" (June 1)**

Dear Chevenors and friends,

You are cordially invited to join our drama appreciation event to watch "The Rainbow Troops", produced and written by Ms Jo Ngai, and directed by Mr Rensen Chan, in June with an exclusive backstage visit prior to the show. Presented by local theatrical troupe the Nonsensemakers and sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Jockey Club Hand in Hand ⋯⋯Capable Theatre Includrama Project has adapted the world-famous novel “The Rainbow Troops” by Andrea Hirata, which carries the theme of "discrimination stems from misunderstanding, acceptance starts with communication”. Through watching the dramatic artistry, the audience is able to reflect on the values of life and learn about disability inclusion. This Includrama Project aims to provide a platform for theatre to provide equal opportunities for people with different abilities.

As many of you know, Jo is a Chevening scholar and deeply involves in drama production. She founded Nonsensemakers (糊塗戲班) and participated in various drama shows alongside with her full-time news anchor role in the past. She is now devoting much of her time to Nonsensemakers and Hand in Hand Capable Theatre (無障礙劇團) to bring to us many renowned and well-received stage productions.

Prior to the drama, Jo has kindly arranged for us an exclusive backstage visit to uncover the stage design, scenery, props and some "tricks" hidden behind the stage. We hope this can bring you a different perspective to stage production.

Story introduction:
At the brim of being torn down, a local school in Indonesia eagerly hoped for recruiting adequate student to maintain its existence. With some last-minute addition, this free-for-all yet shabby, worn-out classroom continue with the mission to educate the children of the lower classes. While struggling to strive with limited funding, they also face threats from the coal-mining company and corrupted officials.
