Buying plane tickets with VPN

Hello,

I have been trying to save some money on travelling, especially on the most expensive part -flights. So obviously I have been looking for ways on the internet, and came across a tip to buy tickets with VPN. Anybody tried this? Does and how this work?

It says Virtual networks "are vital when booking cheap flights via today’s internet". Im not really familiar with such services.

That link is just basically a collection of urbans myths written by someone who probably doesn't buy airline tickets that often.

You can sometimes access different inventory for a particular flight by using the airlines own website and just changing your country, the prices will be largely similar however. You don't need a VPN for that. If you are booking with major carriers that are members of an alliance you could find flights cheaper by booking through one of their partners. Google Flights is a good tool for finding these deals as they check inventory pricing across partners.

much of the article is nonsense. there is sometimes a difference with prices based on point of sale however this can also lead to issues as in recent posts where traveller had book a ticket for a flight at a price that was only available to residents of that country so had to pay the non-local difference at the airport or not travel. They may also expect a payment card and address based in the country you are pretending to be in.

I have tried it all. Deleting cookies, using vpn, searching in other countries using vpn to see prices in foreign currencies and even using two laptops to compare all those options to just searching without any tricks. Obviously I didn't feel like running hundreds of comparisons but in the limited numbers I ran it I never stumbled upon a serious price difference. So I too think it's urban legend.

I found a quick example of a saving between buying the same flight on BA via AA, it's only £50 but I've seen and purchased where there has been a much larger difference: https://goo.gl/flights/ufF9i

Re reply#5:

What has that to do with booking with a VPN? That screenshot just confirms what reply#1 already says, i.e. that you can sometimes find a lower price for the same flight booking through a codeshare partner. I have also benefited from that in the past without resorting to any tricks.

I haven't read the article but I did witness an event once which could be something that could happen to you by using a VPN.

I was flying domestically within Argentina. The national carrier operates a 2 tier pricing structure, low prices for locals, higher prices for others. I tried doing a dummy booking to get the lower price by using my Buenos Aires hotel address as my address, just to see what happened. It became clear to me that once I'd entered my passport that I was not going to be able to book the flight. While very, very few airlines do need passport info at time of flight tickets, this airline wanted them and you can figure out exactly why.

I was simply testing the system, I booked the ticket with my UK address and paid the 'foreigner fare' which was not hugely higher as I booked early.

At the airport when we did fly, there were some other passengers causing some sort of kerfuffle at a check in counter for a different flight destination. I did not overhear any of the conversation, but was told by the local in 'my' check in line that it was a foreigner being asked to pay the fare difference for having the wrong ticket, and something the check in staff were wise to (online check in was not available at that airport for the airline I was flying).

SWT, that same local fare for locals and a higher fare for foreigners existed until very recently in Peru. And the same kerfuffle at the check in counter has been posted several times in the Peru forum. That was when I went to Peru. I recently went back to the forum and found that they had abolished that system. It was with the two bigger airines. The discount ones had one price for both locals and foreigners.

OP, I read the article. It is an advertorial to use VPN. I use a VPN, in fact two of them and one of them is a 2 step vpn. Doesn't do much for air fare prices.

"Re reply#5:

I know what post #1 says it was my post. I was just clarifying the point as the OP doesn't come across as tech savvy and pictures can explain better than words. The only thing that it has to do with buying using a VPN is just proving that is an urban myth and actual savings are readily available.

So a website calling itself "VPNpro" asserts that a VPN is essential to get the best prices. What a surprise!
