We’re shortly travelling to Cuba from the Uk and have been advised to use a VPN if we’re planning on using the internet. Is this easy to set up and can anyone recommend a company they have used personally.

I use MullVad VPN, works fine, just don't forget, you need to enter username and password to access their wifi before you can enable your VPN to protect your browsing history (note that using a VPN also disable the data and speed limits that resorts wifi network use, so you'll have a much faster experience than others guests in your resort as they are unable to block the speed of services like youtube and such when using a VPN, so technically it isn't exactly fair for other guests since you'll get the speed and the others will be slowed down.

IF you’re going to a resort or hotel, you will get free Wifi anyways, so you can do most basic things with Wifi

So why would you need a Vpn ?

Maty, not sure what you mean... What is free wifi having to do with the use of a VPN?

Amongst other things, a VPN "virtually" locates you in an other town/country. So it's very useful in Cuba. Many sites are not accessible or cannot be used while in Cuba, or you cannot make purchase on them. For example Viazul, Airbnb, the AppStore, Air Canada, and so many more.

Depends what people need to do with Internet.

People who go for a 2-3-4 -week vacation at AI resort only need Wifi to simply access their email and WhatsApp with friends. And Wifi is free at most hotels.

Independent travellers have different needs if they need to access everything. Especially that Wifi is hard to find outside of hotels.

Well, for those with IPhones, it's really useful to have since you cannot download from the AppStore without the VPN.

Some banking applications cannot be used in Cuba without a VPN. Same for some news websites.

So yes, even a typical resort tourists is likely to need it. Because many uses nternet for a lot more then WhatsApp, even during vacations...

And I still do not understand why you mention free wifi. Yes, people will use their VPN when connected to the free wifi. Or their own data plan from Canada. Or a Cuban Simcard.

Every person/tourist can decide for themselves if they really gonna need it, only for Cuba

You'll need a VPN if you want to book Viazul buses online while you're in Cuba. You may also be blocked from accessing certain sites - like if you're booking additional travel (hotels or flights). We've had problems accessing https (i.e. the secure version of a site) when not using a VPN meaning there was no security at all. If you need to access banking details while you're there, or even want to watch something on the BBC, which you normally need to bein the UK to watch. A VPN can make your device appear as though its not accessing the internet in Cuba. NordVPN is well rated. ExpressVPN, however, tends to get the number 1 spot most years. I've used ExpressVPN for more than 13 years.
