First time visit to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson near Charlottesville. Beautiful setting and architecture and so much history. They are doing a nice job strictly enforcing safety measures during Covid. Tickets need to be purchased in advance and the number of visitors are restricted each day to avoid overcrowding. Mask wearing is required in all indoor public spaces including at the visitor center, in the house , and on the shuttle. After enjoying the short films at the visitor center, you are provided with a specific time to board the shuttle for the 5 min ride up to the house. No guided tours currently but walking through the main level of the house at your own pace using the self-guide through your phone worked very well. The tour does not include upstairs but all the important rooms in the house are found on the main level including Jefferson's study and bedroom, main dining room and the parlour. You can also visit the interesting basement level and the grounds including Mulberry Row where slave quarters are located. Instead of riding the shuttle back, we made the pleasant 15 min downhill walk which passes by the cemetery to see the final resting place of Jefferson. Instead of tours of the gardens and Mulberry Row where Jefferson's slaves lived, they have set up outdoor stations where visitors can socially distance and these topics are discussed along with a chance to meet Thomas Jefferson. These presentations are very informative and do a nice job explaining the greatness of Jefferson but also recognizing his human faults with a frank discussion of the injustice of slavery. In fact a large part of the visit to Monticello is focused on the institution of slavery which is not surprising as the records kept here were probably more complete than any other plantation in the country. Painful to hear but a vital part of our history and only when we recognize these past mistakes do we grow as a country as we "strive to make a more perfect union".

This is a beautiful site with obvious historic value and complexities. Worth it just for that. But I had interactions with about 10 people on the staff and they were all absolutely wonderful. Extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and most importantly very willing to help you out with more information.

This was a fascinating place to visit as an adult. I enjoyed the QR codes throughout and free wifi that enabled you to connect more on your self-guided tour. We easily spent 3 hours here. Very impressed with the staff, safety measures, and presentation. The "Thomas Jefferson" speaker is a nice touch.

First time to visit Monticello and it exceeded my expectations. Even with the restrictions due to COVID-19, we were able to tour the house and walk the grounds on our own. We got lucky in that when we arrived, President Jefferson was there given a brief recap of his life at Monticello. This actor was so versed and into his character, made you believe you might be talking to President Jefferson. Highly recommend this taking a trip to see it.
