So well said by the queen.
Wow that’s beautiful. I’m in public but I want to tear up. Nobody ever told me that either and I had to teach it to myself as an adult
I am not invalidating what she says at all, it is wisdom beyond measure, but I just CANNOT wrap my head around Viola Davis making herself small, ever. I'm sure she did, and she's speaking from experience, but it's just wild how social conditioning works against everyone, including a somewhat intimidating goddess like Viola.
You should read her book. She does the audio book herself; and her life is, as they say, a triumph of the will
I went on an autobiography-spree in 2023 and hers was my favourite.
Love this. A few months ago I fell hard for a guy...it wasn't working out. We had a big, hard talk. And I remember his face when I said, "I told myself before I came here, no matter what happened in this conversation, I was still leaving with someone I love deeply and profoundly: myself." And I did and was. Took me years and therapy and group to learn this and still have to remember this. Beautiful she has taught her daughter.
I relate to what you wrote. No matter how much I love a man, I will always choose myself first if being with him will not allow me to honor myself. Although my relationship with my ex wasn't necessarily toxic, I was left unfulfilled due to how different we do relationships. I did learn a lot from that experience. I know what I want and my boundaries.
Yes, you have to give yourself grace and acceptance. If you cannot love yourself it’s hard to accept from someone else. We show up so much for everyone else but it’s very difficult to accept and love yourself. The things we say to ourselves we won’t let anyone say about our friends or family. It’s a great lesson to teach the generations after us.
What wonderful advice and upbringing she is giving her daughter. How I wish someone had told me this in the past but it's never too late. I think it's so difficult for us to be generous with ourselves, to forgive and uplift ourselves, it's a daily struggle. A few days ago I saw a post from someone with their childhood photo saying that they hope they are making that child happy and proud and it made me think a lot about what I dreamed of and what I became, well, it's not always easy but we need to love and always evaluate what is best on our path and there is always a new day to start this. Anyway, I love Viola's interviews and how she always brings great reflections on life.
This is so beautiful and true.
This is gorgeous. The best advice you could give a young woman and you can tell she really wants her daughter to be secure in herself and please herself above all else.
That was so lovely. Can Viola adopt me?
What a wonderful piece of advice. All people and especially women, need to hear this.
10/10 mother right here.
I wish I'd had this kind of guidance growing up. I think it could have made a real difference as a teenager with an ED. Gonna go have a cry now.
Her memoir, Finding Me, is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. Viola Davis is such a wise woman.
wish i grew up with this mentality lol.
BRB, off to show this to my daughter
That is so powerful. I wonder what it's like to try to apply that knowledge now vs growing up with it. What a great parent
Beautiful.
I'm trying really hard not to cry right now.
This brought me to tears, what a parenting inspiration
This is my new affirmation. Thank you, Viola
love this so much

You is smart, you is kind, you is important
My name is Genesis so now I feel extra special
