PELHAM MANOR, NY — Officials are blaming a gas leak, rather than the heavy rains this weekend, for the partial collapse of a seaside Westchester home.

A call about a gas leak on Saturday afternoon led to the discovery of another serious problem, when first responders discovered the collapse of a basement wall at a house on Shore View Circle in Pelham Manor.

"We feel it is important to explain that the damages sustained by the home on Shoreview Circle are believed to be a direct result of a gas leak," Pelham Manor officials said in a statement released on Monday. "Fortunately, our Fire Department was the first to arrive on the scene and was able to evacuate the home occupants based on their findings (very strong odor of gas, chimney pulled away from the structure, and a compromised foundation). ConEdison was on the scene shortly thereafter and immediately began their procedures. We are grateful that everyone involved is safe. This is one of the many reasons why we support ConEdison's requests for infrastructure improvements."
