El folk metal es un subgénero del heavy metal desarrollado principalmente en Europa a partir de 1990. Como el nombre sugiere este género es una fusión de las distintas vertientes del heavy metal con la música folk tradicional, por lo que incluye un amplio uso de instrumentos y cantos tradicionales. En esencia, cualquier grupo de metal que utilice música tradicional en sus composiciones puede ser considerada como exponente del folk metal, aunque existe una amplia gama de bandas bajo esta rúbrica, por lo que en algunos casos es una clasificación difícil. Muchas veces se relaciona el término con el de pagan metal o viking metal, pero aunque algunas bandas pueden ser consideradas como viking/folk o pagan/folk éstos no deben ser confundidos como un mismo género. Se utiliza una gran variedad de instrumentos étnicos por lo que a menudo las bandas pueden contener seis o más miembros en sus formaciones regulares. Las líricas en el género tratan normalmente sobre el paganismo, la naturaleza, la mitología y la historia de sus pueblos, además de temas festivos como el alcohol o la fiesta. Lo que está claro es que destaca por sus ritmos alegres, sus canciones épicas y por su enorme riqueza ya que abarca tanta cultura como folklore tiene cada país.
Este estilo nació con el álbum debut de los británicos SKYCLAD “The Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth” en 1990. Es en ese año cuando situamos la primera etapa del Folk Metal que iría desde ese 1990 al 1999. Sin embargo, no sería hasta 1999 cuando el Folk Metal alcanzó una notable popularidad gracias a la consolidación de la escena finesa gracias al apoyo mutuo entre bandas, al apoyo de los fans y al de las propias discográficas.
Hoy en día el Folk Metal es un estilo que puede presumir de tener una cantidad de fans que va creciendo progresivamente. Debido a sus tradiciones, historia y herencia cultural algunos países y regiones han destacado en la escena del Folk Metal; Finlandia, Rusia y Alemania son quizá los tres países que encabezan esta lista con bandas sobresalientes. En Rusia existe un gran número de grupos de folk metal, es probablemente el país con más representantes, a pesar de que el folk metal ruso no es tan "popular" como el finlandés cuenta con algunas de las mejores bandas, siendo Arkona la más conocida. Aunque el Folk no se ha quedado ahí y ha avanzado hacia Asia, dando a luz al atrayente Oriental Folk Metal.
