We’ve visited many palaces of Europe and North America, but this time, we have decided to give a special visit to the famed gardens of Habsburg dynasty, the Summer Gardens of Schoenbrunn. It basically took the whole afternoon; yet, it was worth every moment we’ve walked around this gorgeous place. From the royal tradition on the sculptures adorning every isle to the impeccably manicured greenery—all is harmonious and beautiful still today.

Suggestion: do not miss small but enchanting Japanese Garden nestled next to the Zoo. Not easy to find!

Whether it’s hopping the cafes and Christmas markets or living through history in the palaces and museums, you can’t go wrong in Vienna, probably the best city in Central Europe (each entitled to their own opinion, of course). I always felt safe and comfortable in this pedestrian-friendly, clean, welcoming place. The city center is larger than your Bruges or Salzburg, but that’s because Vienna really packs a punch for its size. Yet even while feeling sprawling, you still get this small-town charm that is missing in the likes of Lisbon or Amsterdam. I don’t know how to describe it.

An art critic wrote that it’s worth the trip to Vienna just to see the largest exhibition of Pieter Bruegel paintings…and we stumbled upon it at Kunsthistorisches Museum, which I consider a world class art museum. Their Egyptian rooms may not have many mummies but they are the best I’ve seen. Not just the exquisite millenia old sculptures from ancient Egypt but the way the rooms were painted with beautiful Egyptian motifs to complement the stunning artwork. Back to Pieter Bruegel…we were awed by his masterpieces, Hunters in the Snow and Tower of Babel. The former depicts a winter scene in the 1500’s at a time when it’s rare to paint non secular subjects. The Tower of Babel is a magnificent piece, the details are simply astounding!
The building interior itself is a sight to behold. Feast your eyes on the gorgeous ceilings.
I made a reservation for lunch at their cafe, La Cupola, which is arguably the most beautiful cafe in Vienna…only a museum entry ticket allows access to his cafe.
A definite must go whilst in Vienna!

Vienna’s massive gothic cathedral is located in the heart of the city and is a great reference point. It is free to enter but you pay extra for certain things such as going up the tower. It is a busy area of the city and one all visitors will visit at least once during their trip.

A must visit when in Vienna. Very well organized with time slots. Besides the exhibitions which were amazing, spending time in the gardens was also wonderful.

You have to see the Hofburg on your trip to Vienna. It’s a majestic work of architecture housing so much history. On the ideal palace tour, Hofburg and Schonbrunn both deserve your attention. The Hofburg is usually more affordable to enter than the Schonbrunn, and the cost should be worth it for any history buff.

The zoo is relatively compact so most visitors won’t spend all day here, but I did and there’s definitely a lot to do. I visited on a Tuesday during the second half of April and it wasn’t very crowded, likely because of intermittent light rain, but it was still a great visit. The website shows a map with the schedule of feeding/training times; it’s great because the times are spread out throughout the day so you can experience several sessions if you like. The sessions are accompanied by a guide in German, but they all answered questions in English after their talks. I didn’t realize the zoo had koalas and pandas, which aren’t common in zoos so it was fun to see different types of animals. The cafe in the historic building in the middle of the zoo is breathtaking and good quality; there are more casual options. The zoo is closest to the Hietzing u-Bahn stop although most probably visit in combination with Schonbrunn, which I toured the previous day. If you are short on either time or budget, I’d consider skipping Schonbrunn Palace and visit its free gardens and the zoo; those were the best bits as the crowds at the palace were overwhelming, even on a Monday in April.

They were planting flowers while we were there. Beautiful gardens, fountains, and greenhouses. You can walk around for hours, which we did while waiting for the palace tour.

An impressive collective of famous and not so famous art from the late 1800s onwards. Monet, Degas, Renoir and the list goes on. Very popular and gets busy but not surprising. Plan a good half-day to do it justice.

It was absolutely amazing! Many many things to see, even my 10 year old enjoyed very much! Wouldn’t recomrnd with small child because there are many satira and the place is huge, you have to walk a lot.

We booked our opera tickets in a box for Le Nozze di Figaro. The singers were first class just as the orchestra. The performance is more on the traditional side with a tiny modern twist.

As others have commented, the box is quite small which you would share with a total of 7 people. For the 3 at the front, each person gets an individual screen showing the translation in language of your choice. For those 4 at the back, the screens are on one side and the reading may be a bit tricky.

The building is a classic beauty. Especially the rooms and terrace are beautiful and they are only open during intermission.

For us, it is one of the most unforgettable evenings in Vienna.

The State Hall of the national library is straight out of Hogwarts! Incredible architecture, fabulous paintings and frescoes, soaring stacks of ancient books (potions and spells?), secret hidden doors, creaky old ladders on wheels, statues and sculptures, antique globes, and much more. Well worth the 10 euros (8 euros seniors) entry!
