Excellent

Very well written, bravo BJ. The directing and acting couldn't have been better. Ashton Kutcher was splendid as the record producer. The scene of him in the studio directing the young singer was extremely well-written, acted and directed. One of the best scenes I have watched in any movie in quite a while. Powerful stuff.

As a Texan, I have to say you nailed the connection most of us have found in God's Country. We moved here in 2006 and it's amazing how this place grows on you, makes you appreciate life and people more. Makes ya slow down and listen to what people have to say. And thank the Lord there IS a Whataburger everywhere. 😃

Interesting and thoughtful
Diamho22 January 2023
Loved the movie, found it more thought provoking than expected. The opening scenes give you a brief view of the type of life he leads in New York as a writer and Podcaster. Hanging with a friend at a party or club, they banter on about their lack of commitments since they don't really want to have a close connection. I lived in TX in the late 70's to mid-80's and BJ Novak captured rural TX and its people picture perfect. Nothing has changed! The characters actions and reactions were spot on as his character was navigating his way through some very odd situations. I do not want to provide any spoilers. Watch it and take it all it. The actors were all terrific. Kudos to BJ Novak for a very interesting story.

Fascinating exploration of searching for fulfillment
bradley122719 February 2023
B. J. Novak plays it very straight in his story's quest for career relevance. Lives within lives unfold in a bleak setting where people strive for their dreams... until they don't. Ashton Kutcher's character is deceptively brilliant, distilling human behaviour down to basic simplicity. His role reminded me of Jennifer Aniston's role in The Good Girl, where she tried not to be Jennifer. Ashton is marvelous and convincing.

Where do we put our intelligence and creativity without positive constructive outlets? To a world of escapism, deviseness and tribal thinking. I did not see the ending coming... well done B. J.

A MUST SEE and a very pleasant surprise!
Ducboy5822 January 2023
B. J. Novak has always proven himself as a writer and actor and yet I didn't expect anything like this film from him. He delivered on the comedy, as usual, but this script - and his performance were brilliant for their poignantcy and relevance - addressing,, among other things, the shallow nature of social media and its impact on our relationships.

This is so much more than the comedy you might expect from Novak or Kutcher.

Ashton Kutcher's character was so well written (and beautifully perfomed) that the movie is worth watching for his character as much as Novak's.

Actually, the entire cast does a remarkable job and each character has something honest and valuable to offer..

This film should have done much better at the box office so hopefully it will get the attention it deserves on Amazon Prime.

This is the kind of film you'll want to watch again.

Smart movie for everybody ! Way better than expected! Highly recommended
terry-6158218 August 2022
OK, here's the point: I've seen this movie without any idea, I didn't read any paper or review...frankly I thought it was an action movie about...guess what...vengeance, like another hundreds of movies we've all seen, boring sure but you know you see this kinda movies anyway ... In fact Vengeance was way smarter, and more interesting than the last million movies I've recently seen: everything is fine: the story, the actors, the timing ...I don't want to spoil anything here; but if you have something else than.peanut butter between your hears, and if you can watch something else than a superhero movie ( don't shoot, I like superheroes movies too!) you will enjoy it, and maybe ( just maybe) you will see people and life differently.... sounds too much ? Don't be afraid I told you it's a smart movie... Highly recommended

Kuos to. BJ Novak; I hope it will get the succes he deserves...and will wait for his next movie

PS: I wrote this intro before reading any review here; just the fresh "out-of-the box" feelings.

Really good writing
amazon-com-946-4848616 October 2022
I love the depiction of contrasting 2 American lives - New York City vs rural Texas. Ben is a typical creative smart writer hailing from NYC. I'm still not sure what's John Mayer doing in the movie (for the sake of cameo?). I love the narratives and flow of conversations, a lot of thought provoking monologue as Ben recorded his podcast. Yes it was a slow start, but I quickly enjoy the good writing and smart puns. The scene of having meal with the family is my favorite! This movie warrants some award and recognition, especially the writing and the originality. Bravo to BJ Novak, it's really witty, smart, unexpected movie with twist at the end.

Completely Unexpected
scottbhopkins19 February 2023
Moves from what you think will be a predictable stereotypical comedy to something feel good to something dark. Excellent performances across the board. If you're not introspective before watching this, you should be afterwards. Many truths spoken about our pretensions of knowledge about plays and novels, as well as about how we extrapolate truths, splintering them into multiple possible truths, like Kellyanne Conway's "alternative facts". Quintin's soliloquy about how everything is exploited to the point of obfuscating reality hits the mark. The depiction of people as characters, merely filling roles, emphasizes how we see people in stories via media such as podcasts.

It is hysterically funny, and so well-written and pertinent.
ozgrosso23 January 2023
JB Novak is a genius with his writing and directing on this movie. It is hysterically funny and so well-written and pertinent. Painfully insightful and warm. Every angle adds layers, and every layer pulls you in to a maze of introspection and self-awareness that makes you laugh and understand the complexities of America. Ashton Kutcher knocks it out of the park with his twisted record producing guru character and the warmth of the families loss is enough to want you to suffer west Texas for at least the terrific ending that leaves you wanting more. You only wish it could never end, or at least let you stay for breakfast.

Watch this!
sharifhassan-0719914 March 2023
Honestly, one of the most interesting and enjoyable movies I've seen in quite a while! Equal parts thought-provoking and down-right hilarious, Vengeance starts out almost feeling a little too familiar but immediately sets itself apart from the scores of movies that revolve around a workaholic, big-city character discovering the charms of small-town life. It does this in a number of ways, not least of which is through its adamant refusal to reduce even a single character to a flat, two-dimensional cliche. Vengeance forces us to reflect on a lot of the realities that we, as a society, are growing increasingly uncomfortable acknowledging, but it doesn't do so in the heavy-handed way that's sadly become so common in movies and TV shows recently. Instead, it balances humbly inviting introspection while thoroughly seeking to entertain. In doing so, BJ Novack's Vengeance secures that rarest of victories when it comes to the arts - finding humor without making fun, educating without preaching, and emphasizing the universal in the human experience without denying the particular.

Refreshingly Writerly
craigakepler22 January 2023
After enduring so much big studio dreck the past couple of years (Avatar II being perhaps exhibit A), it was refreshing to come across a sincere, heartfelt, deeply personal joint like Vengeance. I do agree that there is a bit of a forest/trees issue here. BJ Novak includes a lot of sly references and nods to predecessors. Goodwill Hunting has cast a prominent shadow here. Apocalypse Now. Every "going back to the small town" Hallmark holiday film ever. Kill Bill.

As an aside, to me one of the most hilarious points is that BJ wrote the villain as a Yale alum. Every Harvard alum will love that.

The shout out to Richard Linklater, inaccurately linking him to University of Texas. Perfect moment.

My first impression was "sort of a post-Millennial Goodwill Hunting," but I think that's too trite. What Novak was going after here was more nuanced, and mostly he hit the mark in my book. Among other things, he managed to capture certain facets of rural west Texas without being condescending or mocking, and yet being funny. There's something deeply human about this.

Warning: Spoilers
I am having a hard time with the comments about this movie being pretentious or a mess (and which is it, anyway, because the first is artifice and the second is reality). This movie is a very good work of art and will stand the test of time.

This is a classic movie about America and Americans...the best I have seen since Gran Torino. It's starts with pretentiousness, finding your voice, proving your theories of this country, people, what have you, and turns that upside down and inside out. Novak's character deleting his recordings at the end so that all we are left with is the story and the people/characters was beautiful, sublime and ironic (because a film is a record of course). Living is messy, both beautiful and painful, and good art captures that without having to explain it to you. And yes, most of us are afraid to admit that we too are living in the mess we see around us, let alone actively participate in it by fully intentionally murdering your former fling's killer, even when that first killing itself was careless, casual negligence.

Also, many clever, hilarious lines in this ultimately serious movie.

A+ B. J.

Definitely not what I expected
This is the most authentic movie of the year that you've never heard of. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Very emotional. It's a very beautiful story. Please do not judge this movie by the first 15 minutes. By the time you had an hour you're gonna be so enveloped in the story you're not gonna want to stop watching. It's Aston Kucher as you've never seen him before. I highly recommend this movie now I have 208 characters left to write and I don't wanna give any spoilers. Hopefully there's more movies coming out that are like this. What lives in a Sandcastle? A sand witch. 29 characters left! We are going to get to the end.

The kind of content we want
Patricmac19 August 2022
I did not expect much from this movie but I was surprised by how good it turned out to be. The various themes are well explored and actions and consequences are well articulated.

Goes to show that people can actually make good movies about morals without preaching wokeness.

Not that you see at face value
haoxuw28 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's a lot of characters are actually personafied ideas or objects. Like the little brother, who is actually a dog, which explains why near end scene Ben literally tide up him in the car with an actual rope. Those visual scenes shown in the movie are how Ben would like to remembered. Be's sort of a unreliable narrator who romanticized what actually happened. He's initial conversation with the Texas family foreshadowed this perfectly.

This explains the ending as well, i.e. Ben's crazy uncharacteristic murdering of the antagonist, who is yes, also a personafied abstraction of the charming drug factories that lured the white girl and led her to death. Ben would like to think he pulled out a gun and shot the opioid factories dead, like a cowboy.

There are many more subtle hints of the romanticized narrative, for example the scene where the antagonist inspired the singer with that poetic speach. In reality, the singer simply got high. Or how the cops are cartoonishly impotent. Or the gang leader is literally in every party and wasn't actually. Or how Ben literally killed a person in a party, went back to NY and cops didn't care.

It's Complicated
fuschiakitty19 October 2022
Not a drama, nor a comedy. I laughed for sure, it has humor. It feels very personal. Filled with ideas I've never had yet also voicing ideas I've had. It's a fish out of water story where the fish realizes water is eveywhere, he just didn't know. I hate writing reviews, because how I feel about a movie isn't always about how good it is production wise. Did it make me pay attention, did it make me think, did it make me feel? This movie is a yes, to all those questions. It paid respect to all the characters in the film, even the ones normally made the butt of jokes. That includes the main character. It's not a genre film it's that something new.

I wasn't sure but now I know.

Warning: Spoilers
When I started this movie it just kind of felt like the movie was headed to be just another cheap hollywood push of garbage, I recognized a few of the actors and being included with my Amazon subscription I figured, why not? It started off very generic like it was trying really hard to be something, they tried painting a lot of Texas as if we are idiots or something but I soon realized it was more of the main characters view of the world and how he constantly compared the country to the city and it eventually unfolds into a story similar to a hallmark movie (but actually good) and this city kid kind of realizes he is messing with real peoples live and the death of a real person and someone who mattered greatly to those around them. The antagonist surprises him and kind of just calls him out on the hypocrisy of trying to act superior or holier than thou. That sweet sweet vengeance at the end was brilliant. I actually found this movie to be enjoyable and thought provoking, I find myself thinking about it off and on throughout the day since watching it. 9/10 easy.

The message hit hard in a good way!
terrysimcik23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While watching this film I realized I was caught up in the middle of a who done it but not at all in a usual way.

Sure the story involved a mystery, a possible crime, a prospective villain etc . It also developed slowly enough ( while still being highly entertaining on many levels) to present many facets to the underlying main theme. Is it about a crime or a rush to judge! All of the above.

First I thought I was watching a Rom-Com with a twist that soon morphed into shades of the Talking Head's David Byrne directed movie,"True Stories", another favorite (spoiler alert I loved this BJ Novak from, "The Office", film).

I noticed that the high priced writing was being deployed in Aston Kutcher's character's first scene.

Here's a kicker. While this rural but enigmatic, even hip, music producer (Kutcher) was trying to inspire a seemingly vapid young female singer to up her game with lofty truisms (to which he succeeds in wowing us), it was her wrenching transition from humming teenager to profoundly soulful, heart gripping country music master that brought the message home in a big way.

The film would now and until the end artistically sound a mantra as it dispells the notion that country folk are shallow by definition. And it was fun to boot.

I was, and I suspect any audience (along with Novak's main character), "struck by lightning" by singer Chevel Shepard's talent and further words, while welcome, weren't necessary to bring home the point.

Just one moment but the most visceral of the film for me, and I'm a jazzer ( Now a pure country music fan too!) Bravo!

Must watch
ehicks-5745715 February 2023
This movie was relative and poignant on many levels. So many quotable moments and thought provoking statements.

I started watching this movie thinking it was just going to be background noise and soon realized it was ending when I wasn't ready for it to be over!

B. J. Novak did a phenomenal job with this movie and every role was well done. Out of no where at the end there were tears rolling down my face.

Along with great meaning and heartfelt moments there was just the right amount of comedy and what I can only imagine very realistic script from all actors. This movie will make you slow down look at and listen to the world and the people around you.

Wanted it to be good... couldn't finish it.
AlexanderJCoulter19 February 2023
1 star because of the cameos.

1 star for the crew.

1 star for BJ producing a movie and the crew delivering.

BJs research for the urban blue collar Texan family felt as if it were through a microscope of vague broad stroke blue collar stereotypes. The cadence of the humor seemed dated. Overall meh.

Personally, I Couldn't get into suspended disbelief to believe that BJ Novacks character who looked like BJ Novack but didn't have any actual clout of BJ Novack was getting so many girls it turned him into a womanizer where he named them vague names in his phone.

No one cares about podcasts, but I'd rather listen to one then watch this again.

Such a beautiful movie which we can really relate to.
nabinsenciy18 August 2022
This movie really described the world that we are living in right now. Great Bj Novac masterclass. I really enjoyed all the scenes from the parts of the movie. The journey completely changed Novac and he was really excellent in all the awkward situation which felt like right out of The Office. Anyways must see movie. The another low rated comment is a slander from someone paid to do bad review because how can you not like this movie.?

Overall highly recommended and must watch movie , really relatable to the current times.

I really loved this movie
jrmoran-6986327 January 2023
This is a really good watch, I laughed out loud a bunch of times and really enjoyed all the characters. Seems many of them are based on extreme versions of people in our society but all of them being relatable on some level. My favorite character had to be the brother and like other reviewers wrote the character played by Ashton. The brother really was the one making my laugh. This movie is filled with interested and thought provoking ideas and speeches given throughout, some of them insane and others feel like they're on to something but it's interesting none the less. The way that it all was written and put together just makes it all solid. Haven't felt that way about a movie in a while. Hats off to B. J. Novak.

Strong Script and Performances - Ashton Kutcher Shines
jmstm29 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Enjoyed this a lot (last night) as very thoughtful, involving, surprising and humorous. Well done by all involved with a special nod to Ashton Kutcher for a very solid turn in a supporting role. For all the film and TV I have watched, I've hardly seen any of his work. Very surprised he and the film in general received next to no awards consideration.

*SPOILER ALERT*

If I were to offer a negative view it would focus on the very end of the film. It is not so much that it strains credulity that Novak's character would commit murder, although it is very out of character, it is more that we don't don't see him "cross the bridge". I did not, anyway.

At the film's outset when vengeance is proposed to him, he rules it out categorically. The rest of the film tends very much to support that he would not commit murder in this case. Yet, in the end, he does and it felt a bit forced, as if there only to prove "Chekov's rule", as mentioned in the film, that if a gun appears in the first act, it must go off in the third.

Still, solid work across the board. A worthy film, for sure.

What a great movie with a deep message!
rcreech2529 January 2023
In today's cinematic world the only movies that get recognized most of the time are the big franchises. Most of the time the low budget films are a hard miss for bigger audiences. With that said. I loved B. J. Novak in The Office, Inglorious Basterds, and basically everything else I've seen him in. This is a great directorial debut for him. It touches on so many aspects of today's world: How disconnected we are as a society, how we as society look at one another in different parts of our country, how we as a society have become judge and jury, along with many other aspects I could touch on, but do not want to give away too much of the plot. Great writing and directing by Mr. Novak! I believe Ashton Kutcher was the best I've ever seen him! I've grown to admire him through the years because of his passions IRL, and how dedicated he is to making a difference.

Up Up Up then stumble and fall
afkdbz20 November 2022
The main character arc was interesting until the end when it hit a 90 degree bend and fell flat. At the start of this film I thought, oh my god, they are going in swinging. I could imagine many people being offended by the condescending flavor of this movie. There were some cringe moments that I had to steady myself for, but fortunately they were brief and not over the top. B. J. Novak leaned hard on the emotionally challenged, selfish character he played in the Office. It almost made the ending believable, almost. It was gratifying to see Ashton Kutcher in a role that played to his strengths for a change, instead of falling back into cueless hero or charming goofy guy. I would watch this just for his performance, however brief. All in all not a lot new here, but I did appreciate some of the more thoughtful insights even though the characters were rather shallow the story was creative and interesting, right up until... The End.

What a great movie!
rosemaryweinberger24 October 2022
I watched this movie on Saturday night and loved it so much, I forced my husband to watch it with me the following night. He loves it too.

So many "popular" movies rely on trendy actors and special effects but lack a good story. This is a really good story. But not only is it a good story, it is very well acted and the timing of story developments were PERFECT. I can't wait to see more from B. J. Novak!

NOTE: I just closed this review box to go back and find out the name of the main actor. And when I did, I discovered that he not only starred in this movie, he wrote and directed it! Wow. I am just floored. Well done B. J.!
