3D help with Vava Chroma?

Troubleshooting

Bought the Chroma two weeks ago, with their 120” ALR screen. Have been very happy with it overall, but I have not been able to get the 3d working at all.

Unfortunately Vava’s support group is a clown show and are no help. 3d is non-negotiable for the family, and I’d rather not have to return it. Checking to see if anyone out there has any insights?

Details -

  • Connected directly to Panasonic blu-ray (DP-UB820-K), with a high speed HDMI

  • using BenQ DLP glasses (DGD5), tried three different pairs

  • tried multiple dvds Avatar, Desp Me, Aladdin

The DVD is putting out “Full HD 3d” top and bottom format.

Chroma settings:

  • firmware = latest

  • turned “dynamic contrast” off

  • set MEMC to “close”. (Don’t know what MEMC is and have actually tried all available settings)

Hopefully I am missing something stupid - thoughts from Team Reddit?

This is exactly why I stayed away from vava. I knew the support would be non-existent and the claims their products make vs. the price point they are offered at just do not match up.

Thanks for the comments…which basically say I should have done more homework! Lol

So, looking at options, I’m looking at the Epson LS500 - native 4k, really good lag times, does 3d, etc. Anyone have experience with that one? Reviews look pretty good from what I see.

The Epson ls500 is a solid projector for gaming. It’s only single laser and doesn’t has as sharp as an image as other units, but it supports 3D, is very bright and has a low lag time. Benq v7050i is also a good single laser option that supports 3D and the Optoma p2 is on a crazy sale right now which makes it a good value too.

Thanks for the input. How about the new LG Cinebeam (HU85LA) - looks like a solid offering? Ultimately I am looking at this as a 10 year investment, so less worried about the cost and more about doing it right.

That model is discontinued in favor of their newer (and better) HU915QE or HU915QB models. Neither of them nor the HU85LA support 3D however

Okay - update 7 months later, and new question for the Reddit hive mind:

I was able to return the Vava for a full refund, and went with the BenQ. Extremely happy with it all around - great recommendation.

With one exception! It only has the two HDMI ports, which is not enough, and the way it switches between them is not typical, to the point where it confuses the Logitech Harmony univ remote.

The answer would typically be to just get a receiver. However, I’m using a wireless Vizio 5.1 soundbar/surround system.

Question to the group - is there a clever way to get the receiver and sound bar to work together?

Wow. You’re a real pillar of the Reddit community. Thanks for the insight, ass.

I did plenty of research - the projector is exactly what I needed, and the wireless soundbar setup is the best answer for my basement.

I am now simply looking to see if I can make it a little better overall. But thanks at least for the bump on the thread…

You got to be pretty scummy for Amazon to pull you for deceitful business practices. Vava is equivalent to Auking, WeeXXX and especially Yaber- all can look good, now at around 500 ANSI lumens for the newer models, but I can almost assure you it will either burn out of give horrible artifacts within 2 years.

3D isn't my thing, but there are a lot of complaints about it in VAVA's chroma community on Facebook.

I'm surprised people are buying these in the wild - the Indiegogo campaign backers have been complaining for six months, and VAVA's basically gone silent. I strongly recommend you return yours - I'd probably return mine if I could. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The actual hardware in it seems pretty capable, but the software support is dragging it down from all sides.

If the Vava has a gaming mode, make sure you disable it. You can take it to factory settings too if all else fails then try it.

I went with the Optoma p2 because I dreaded dealing with support lol

Just throwing a response as I was recently trying to get 3d to work with the vava chroma and I was able to get it to work after some trial and error.  I had to pick up an older 3d bluray player and I chose the Sony UBP-X800 as it has access to 3d movies on vudu as well as the 3d blurays.  I also had to start the movie and then in the vava chroma menu, turn on 3d and select the frame packaged option.  If you select multiple as you go down the list of options it will not work correctly.  If you only select the frame packaged option it will display a 3d image.  Then go up one level in the menu and enable the invert option on the 3d to correct the 3d depth.

Thanks for your post - I got my Chroma a few days ago and have yet to try the 3D functions. So far, it's worlds better than a standard HDTV, even past 150" -vivid and clear. I appreciate your tips on getting the 3D up and running. Do you happen to know what glasses to use? Standard 3D glasses or Active-Link 3D glasses? Thanks!

It uses the active glasses.  I think all projectors use that style.  I found a set of 4 on Amazon fairly cheaply as well.
