Women's Rugby Falls in Tri-State Conference Championship to Columbia

Vassar will head to the NCR Regional Playoffs in Virginia on Saturday

Bronx, NY - Earlier this season Vassar played against Columbia with uncharacteristic timidity and looked lethargic. The Brewers lost 20-28 and knew they would be in a tough game given this was the Conference Championship match-up.

Vassar College Women 22 v 31 Columbia University Women
Tries: Lauren Showalter (1), Leah Dourmashkin (1), Andie Authers (1), Sophia Bailey (1).
ConsZoe Lynch (1).

In the last 4 minutes of the match Vassar was pounding on the Columbia goal line. Columbia was up 24-22 and led for the first time in the match. The Vassar supporters were chanting and willing the team to score and a host of players tried to drive over to get what probably would have been a winning score. But Vassar ball carriers were repelled by the Columbia defenders. Eventually, the ball was passed out to the backs and the Columbia fullback, Izzy Snyder, a former Vassar player, intercepted the pass running the entire length of the field to score. It was a truly dramatic end to the game.

Vassar had shown some good shape with the ball but wasted some opportunities in each half. The Columbia team was up for this contest and they hustled and bustled around the field.

In the first half Vassar took a 17-7 lead but in the final 5 minutes of the half gave away a slew of penalties that allowed Columbia back into the game. In fact 17-7 became 17-17 and despite having the lion's share of possession and territory the teams were tied.

In the second half Vassar started well enough and a defensive set forced Columbia back from just inside their own half to their 22. The team can take away some pride in that series. But Vassar gave away too many turnovers and missed a number of tackles that allowed Columbia back into the contest. Although the Brewers regained the lead and at 22-17 were back in front the home team was eager for the contest.

Full credit to Columbia for continuing to battle away and they took the lead 24-22 and that set up the grandstand finish.

Vassar must now regroup and set their minds to the task of winning the South Regional. This will take place in Culpeper, VA and they will be up against Temple University, Coastal Carolina and Syracuse University.

Meanwhile Columbia travels to Henniker, NH where they will face the US Coast Guard Academy, Roger Williams University and an At-Large team to be announced.

Vassar had wonderful support from parents, family, alums and friends but came up short.
