Vanderlei Luxemburgo was hired as head coach of Real Madrid in the 2004/05 season but didn't survive the entire campaign, and the Brazilian has lifted the lid on how his sacking came about.

The veteran coach had a wealth of stars to choose from, but revealed how that proved a major problem, particularly after feeling the wrath of the fans for substituting Ronaldo in one particular match.

"We beat Getafe and [David] Beckham was sent off in the first half. We were winning 1-0 and in the 90th minute, I took off Ronaldo. With one less player, the normal thing is to see out the win. The fans took out their handkerchiefs and started to protest," Luxemburgo told Flow Sport Club.

"I left the field, I entered the tunnel, I reached a corridor. Florentino Perez came down from the stand and met me there.

"He told me 'Sir, what happened?' I replied that nothing happened. 'Why did you take off Ronaldo?' [Perez said].

"'Geez, president, we are winning the match.' I'm not worried about the fans, I'm worried about Barcelona. I want to catch them up'."

It was his next response that did not sit right with the Real Madrid president, and it eventually cost him his job.

"President, let me tell you something: I'm not enjoying this very much, no. I didn't ask to come, you went to Brazil to hire me. I didn't come here, please don't. I came here because you went to Brazil and you hired me, so I'm going to do what I think I have to do. The next day I was fired."
