Insomnia
For the past couple of years I have woken up almost nearly every night at 4:30. I could roll over and go back to sleep, no problem. Since March with Covid and working from home my nightly wake up has turned into chronic insomnia. I wake up every night at least 3 or 4 times. Doc has diagnosed me with depression and anxiety and has put me on meds. The anti depressant seems to be working but he cant figure out my insomnia. Im also seeing a therapist which I should also helping.
I am at the breaking point. Last night I took my bedtime meds and felt sleepy. 3 hours later I was wide awake. Finally got up and read. Managed another couple hours of toss and turn napping.
My therapist has recommended I try CBD oil. Im willing to give it a shot but know nothing about it. Can anyone suggest a product? Or even a trusted retailer? I looked online and the amount of info in overwhelming.
I welcome any and all suggestions. I really need to sleep!

you can get the CBD oil at any dispensary store. Get the stuff with low THC and you wont feel high.

You are not alone. Minimal sleep for months now. Both my wife and I tried the CBD oil with 1% THC and it worked well for her. I slept well but I had constant nightmares, not sure why? Now I make sure I go to bed earlier and I have gone back to reading a book. No Kindle, just a real paper book. Even the smell when you open it is relaxing.
Dodger.

doctor talked about diet, exercise and keeping busy. take your mind off the day to day stuff and relax.
I know sounds easy but worked for me.

Too easy, and not pot.
Molly, physical exhaustion does wonders for sleeping disorders, anxiety and depression.
Make sure to get outside lots and expend some energy.
Go walking, or hiking, or hunting or fishing.
It's essential.

Melatonin is my friend in these situations. I go through phases, and when I'm in an "awake" phase, melatonin is my saviour...
Oh. Yeah. I'm in that phase again now... They seem to be coming closer and closer together...

A lot to be said for this
Another prescription or drug is likely not necessary

My wife has the similar or perhaps worst issues, she now takes these Gummies, 1 per sleep, she now gets a minimum 8 hours deep sleep every night. I tried them & need 2 per sleep, they also help with my back issues, in the morning you feel refreshed not the groggy feeling from taking sleeping pills.
Give them some consideration, 4 gummies for $7.00 for the price not a big investment.
Trust this has been helpful.
Cheers
David

Some things that helped me
Stay out of your bedroom until bedtime, no lounging in bed
Exercise
Vitamin d
Bed time yoga YouTube it , need to learn breathing
No electronics before bed
I did melatonin for years until I realized what I wasnt doing
Im still waking up some but I feel I sleep better or enough now

Occasionally I need to take melatonin for a couple of days as well to help reset the clock. Sometimes I'll just take a diphenhydramine tablet, as it makes me sleep like a baby as well. Seems like I need to do this 3 or 4 times per year regardless of exercise/fresh air.

Search “mindfulness meditation for sleep “ you will find a few videos which are just talking to play and listen to as u try to help u fall asleep. Just turn your phone upside down so light doesn’t shine when u listen to the meditation .

A good hot cup of licorice tea at bed time. Seems to work for me.

Get up early, no naps during the day or evening, excercise, watch yr caffeine and alcohol intake. If I go to bed early because I am tired, I wake up too early. Hypnosis could work also. BEL

I know for me it has to be exercise, up at 6 and go. Between the farm, part time work, playing in the bush out back, a bit of horse training and such I need to keep busy. I sit down a few times during the day for what I call coffee break, but in about a half hour I need to go. At the end of the day Im sore and exhausted, but if I dont do this I wont sleep one hour at night. I think humans where made to work and play hard, not sit around to long. Our mind cant handle it.

No tv and no computer a couple of hours before retiring. Reading before turning in helps me. CBD oil with THC did absolutely nada for me.
I never have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep when I'm away from home hunting so fresh air and walking obviously helps along with getting away from work. Hell, I've dozed off in -20 with the sun in my face while sitting on a stupid folding stool or in a duck blind.
I think it's all about switching your thoughts off.
Fwiw I can put my granddaughter out in less than 2 minutes with a slow monotone chant. Silly kid. My inner Buddhist I guess.

I had really bad insomnia for years. Sleep maybe 4-5 hours a night, and be tired all day. Wasn't from coffee, I could count the number of cups I had in a year on both hands.
I cut out all fruits, vegetables, starches, and grains from my diet, and ate only meat and animal fat, and real honey for a sweetener, and in about 10 days, I was sleeping 8 hours a night. I didn't have a problem with depression or anxiety, so I can't comment personally on that. However Mikayla Peterson (sp?) has a channel on youtube where she talks about this. She said that she got off of heavy duty anti depressants doing the carnivore diet. Might be worth a watch.

Thanks for all your replies. I have tried nearly everything you have suggested and then some - melatonin, sleepy time tea, vitamins D, only use the bedroom for its intended purposes, stay away from screens before bed and do 15 minutes of meditative breathing before bed. I dont drink more than 2 cups of coffee in the morning, drink at the most 2 glasses of wine on weekends, eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise and spend time outside each day. I am at my wits end. I cant handle another night like last night.

Good news its only 2 more sleeps until Christmas. What I can say is what wakes you doesnt necessarily keep you awake. I believe meditation is the key. To be lost in your own though and to only see with you minds eye.

Ok, first calm down when going to sleep. When you walk into your bedroom the first thing you see needs to be removed(picture etc). Do you have sleep apnea if so clean you mask throughly and put it on when you go to bed, dont wait to be sleepy. Comfortable ear buds, YouTube Michael sealey, deep meditation wont come the first few times. Jamison relax and sleep doesnt have melatonin so I use it......pot is a farce stay away. I have yet to hear the end of a Michael sealey meditation..... sleep well.

My wife does THC occasionally, maybe every 10th night or so. Knocks her out. I always sleep very well camping or hunting, almost always by a creek. I've given some thought to having recorded brook running water for a night or two to try. Good luck!

I've never had chronic insomnia, so I can only hope your experience and education in this is more than mine. But in the past few months one little tip that has helped me is the *timing* of my vitamin D supplement. I take 5000mg of vitamin D per day, but it's taken with a meal and it's taken no later than 3PM otherwise I get goofy dreams and restless sleep, which is not uncommon. I'm not the best sleeper and I am no expert, but maybe this is something that may help.
And lots of outdoor exercise. I've re-discovered the local ice sheet, and 30-60mins of hustle on skates outside most evenings is working wonders for the sleep. Plus staying off the social media/stopping the doom scrolling.

I have been plagued with insomnia at times for years but cope. Coping strategies seem to change with time.
Cannabis does not help, makes it worse. :-(
Things that have helped in the past:
magnesium
melatonin
Breathing exercises when you walk up, belly breathing
move to another area to sleep when you wake up
sleep hygiene: dark , cold, no electronics before bed
orange glasses before bed time when watching TV
get up, get cold then go back to bed
get up for 30 minutes then back to bed
don't look at the clock when you wake up
short term meds
tums if it is acid reflux (even though if does not feel like heart burn!)

I've always had a problem with sleeping and at times, insomnia. 2020 has been a hard year for so many people. I've found that taking magnesium, 200 mgs twice daily (morning & evenings) has really helped along with meditation. The magnesium helps with sleep but it also helps to alleviate stress. If you try magnesium make sure it's the glycinate or bisglycinate as it's easier on the digestive system and absorption by the body.
