Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center

Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Centers (PRRCs) are a key part of the VA's pledge to your care when you are recovering from a serious mental illness. PRRCs are designed to help you recover and get back your life. The VA is creating new PRRC programs.

Serious mental illness can include:

  • Schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Severe posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in some cases

  • Severe major depression, in some cases

Recovery helps you to live, work, learn, and have good relationships. You can fully be part of your community while managing your symptoms. VA is rolling out PRRCs to help you in your recovery process.

What treatments are there for Veterans with serious mental illness?

Mental health treatments include:

  • Outpatient services

  • Intensive outpatient services

  • Residential services

  • Inpatient services

Every VA Medical Center, Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), and Vet Center can link you to mental health services. VA treatment for serious mental illness has greatly improved over the past several years. You can reach your recovery goals. And you can maintain your recovery.

What is a PPRC?

All people have the ability to learn and grow. You are capable of recovering and having meaningful roles and goals in your community. The PRRC program will empower you to work toward defining your role and goals for a better future.

PRRCs provide:

  • A program that helps you learn and reclaim your life, gives you hope, validates your strengths, teaches life skills, and helps you find your place in the community in meaningful ways.

  • A place to define and pursue a personal mission and vision for your future. This mission will be based on your strengths, values, interests, roles, and goals.

  • Access to support, education, and treatment that help cause positive changes in all parts of your life.

  • Access to recovery interventions and local support that helps you live, work, learn, and contribute to your community.

  • PRRC staff who work with other providers to make sure your mental health care is a part of your VA health care services as awhole.
