The John Paul Jones (DDG 53) is the third in the Arleigh Burke-class of Aegis guided-missile destroyers and is named after American Revolutionary War Captain John Paul Jones. The construction began on August 8, 1990, at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; Christened and launched on October 26, 1991. Mrs. Connie Jeremiah, the wife of Adm. David E. Jeremiah, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, served as sponsor of the ship. Cmdr. John M. Kelly is the prospective commanding officer.

October 27, 1993 The Pre Commissioning Unit (PCU) John Paul Jones arrived at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia; Ammunition onload at NWS Yorktown, Va., from Nov. 3-4; Departed Norfolk on Nov. 9; Port call to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Nov. 16-20.

November 27, The guided-missile destroyer pulled into Rodman Naval Base in Balboa, Panama, for a two-day visit, after transiting Panama Canal, to take on fuel and supplies.

December 7, DDG 53 arrived at its new homeport of Naval Station San Diego, Calif., after a four-week transit from Norfolk, Virginia.

December 13, USS John Paul Jones was commissioned during a ceremony at Broadway Pier on NS San Diego.

January 12, 1994 The John Paul Jones arrived at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Calif., for ammunition onload; Underway from March 14-18 in the SOCAL Op. Area; Underway again from March 28- April 1 for shock trial preps; Underway from April 5-8 and 12-15th for FEP; Underway from May 4-5 for OPPE preps. on May 18; Underway for Shock Trial Explosive Malfunctions from May 30- June 1; Underway for Shock Trials from June 6-10; 15-16 and 25-26th; Ammunition offload at NWS Seal Beach from July 5-6.

July 11, USS John Paul Jones entered the Southwest Marine shipyard in San Diego for a Post Shakedown Availability (PSA); Departed dry-dock on Aug. 9; Returned to Naval Station San Diego on Sept. 15; Underway for sea trials on Sept. 19; Magnetic deperming from Sept. 20-22; Returned to homeport on 27th after final contract trials.

October 11, DDG 53 departed San Diego for Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) and Combat System Ship Qualifications Trials (CSSQT).

October 21, USS John Paul Jones pulled into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a three-day port call; Another visits to Pearl Harbor from Nov. 2-7, 11-12 and 16-17; Returned home on Nov. 23.

December 3, The guided-missile destroyer departed Naval Station San Diego for a Dependent's Day Cruise.

December 7, Cmdr. Peter B. Opsal relieved Capt. John M. Kelly as commanding officer of DDG 53.

December 12, USS John Paul Jones departed for a week-long underway period, off the coast of southern California, to participate in COMPTUEX 95-2.

January 9, 1995, The Jones arrived at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach for a three-day ammunition onload; Underway for FLEETEX 95-1A from Jan. 23- Feb. 5; Underway for final ammo onload and acoustic trials from March 6-9.

April 13, USS John Paul Jones departed San Diego for a maiden deployment, as part of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Battle Group.

April 25, The John Paul Jones pulled into Pearl Harbor for emergency dry-dock repairs after suffuring a starboard shaft hub seal casualty; Underway again on May 3.

May 14, The guided-missile destroyer arrived in Singapore for a five-day port visit; Transited the Strait of Hormuz northbound on May 28.

May 29, USS John Paul Jones anchored off Sitrah, Bahrain, for a 10-day visit to Manama.

June 18, The John Paul Jones pulled into Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, for a four-day liberty visit to Dubai; Port call to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., from June 30- July 3, after participating in exercise SHAREEM 110.

July 26, The John Paul Jones pulled again into Jebel Ali port for a two-week upkeep; Port call to Dubai from Aug. 16-23.

September 4, USS John Paul Jones arrived in Muscat, Oman, for a two-day port visit; Transited the Strait of Hormuz southbound on Sept. 9.

September 29, The guided-missile destroyer pulled into Pearl Harbor for a four-day port call.

October 9, USS John Paul Jones returned home after a six-month deployment in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility (AoR).

January 15, 1996 DDG 53 entered the Continental Maritime of San Diego shipyard for two-and-a-half month Selected Restricted Availability (SRA); Underway for sea trials from March 28- April 2; Ammunition offload at NWS Seal Beach from April 30- May 1; Underway for TSTA II from May 13-17 and 20-24th.

May 29, USS John Paul Jones departed San Diego for a Comprehensive Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX).

June 5, The John Paul Jones arrived in Portland, Oregon, for a five-day port visit to participate in Fleet Week festivities during the city's annual Rose Festival.

June 14, USS John Paul Jones arrived at Naval Submarine Base Point Loma for repair availability with USS McKee (AS 41), as part of an experiment to determine the ability of submarine tenders to provide servise for surface ships; Underway for TSTA II from July 8-12; 22-26; and July 29- Aug. 2.

August 10, The guided-missile destroyer departed Naval Station San Diego for a Dependent's Day Cruise.

August 20, Cmdr. J. Bruce Hamilton relieved Cmdr. Peter B. Opsal as the 3rd CO of USS John Paul Jones during a change-of-command ceremony held at Pier 7.

From August 26-30, the Jones was underway for a Tailored Ship's Training Availability (TSTA) III; Underway for Final Evaluation Problem (FEP) from Sept. 10-12.

September 17, USS John Paul Jones entered the Steadfast floating dry-dock for a 10-day hub changeout.

October 18, The John Paul Jones departed for a two-week COMPTUEX 96-5A; Underway for Integrated Training Assessment (ITA) from Nov. 5-7; Underway for COMPTUEX 96-5B from Nov. 13-20.

January 16, 1997 DDG 53 departed San Diego for a 10-day underway to participate in FLEETEX 97-1; Underway for CSRR on Feb. 4; Port visit to Catalina Island from 4-5th; Ammo onload at NWS Seal Beach from Feb. 5-6; Underway for JTFEX from Feb. 10-21; Underway for a Friends and Family Day Cruise on March 26.

April 1, USS John Paul Jones departed Naval Station San Diego for a scheduled deployment with the USS Constellation (CV 64) Battle Group.

April 24, The Jones arrived in Newcastle, Australia, for a four-day port visit; Port call to Fremantle from May 3-7; Arrived in the Arabian Gulf on May 19.

June 7, USS John Paul Jones pulled into Dubai, U.A.E., for a two-week port visit; Port call to Manama, Bahrain, from June 23-27.

July 20, The John Paul Jones arrived again in Manama, Bahrain, for a three-day port call after participating in exercise Red Reef, July 11-18.

August 7, The John Paul Jones arrived in Karachi, Pakistan, for a brief port visit before participating in a multinational exercise Inspired Siren '97, Aug. 9-12; Participated in exercise Bold Departure from Aug. 12-15; Port call to Singapore from Aug. 23-26.

August 31, The guided-missile destroyer arrived in Hong Kong for a four-day port visit; Port call to Kagoshima, Japan, from Sept. 7-8.

September 25, The Jones pulled into Victoria, B.C., for a two-day port visit to embark "Tigers" after participating in exercise Northern Exposure, from Sept. 17-21.

October 1, USS John Paul Jones returned to San Diego after a six-month western Pacific and Middle East deployment.

November 15, The John Paul Jones arrived in Mazatlan, Mexico, for a three-day port visit; Underway in support the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Battle Group's ITA, as part of oppositon forces, from Dec. 8-12 and Dec. 15-18.

January 14, 1998 The guided-missile destroyer entered the Steadfast floating dry-dock for a Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA); Moved to Southwest Marine shipyard on March 10; Underway for sea trials and returned to Naval Station San Diego on March 20; Underway for a Friends and Family Day Cruise on March 27.

April 2, Cmdr. Edward L. Brownlee relieved Cmdr. J. Bruce Hamilton as CO of the Jones.

June 2, USS John Paul Jones arrived in Monterey, Calif., for a three-day port visit to host a multinational conference on Theater Ballistic Missile Defense (TBMD).

June 5, The John Paul Jones pulled into San Francisco for a three-day port call; Ammo onload at NWS Seal Beach from June 18-19; Underway for TSTA I from July 7-10 and 21-24th.

August 13, USS John Paul Jones moored to Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego for a Fleet Week.

The John Paul Jones was underway for TSTA II from Aug. 18-21 and 24-28th; Underway for TSTA III from Sept. 30- Oct. 2; Underway for Type Training from Oct. 5-7; Underway again from Nov. 3-5, 10-12, 16-19 and 23-25th; Underway for FEP from Nov. 30- Dec. 2.; Underway for TYT from Dec. 7-9; Underway for a Friends and Family Day Cruise on Dec. 15.

From February 19 through March 3, 2001, the Jones was underway off the coast of southern California for a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX).

March 31, DDG 53 arrived in Eureka, Calif., for a three-day port visit; Underway for Type Training from April 9-12; Ammo onload at Seal Beach from April 30- May 3.

June 4, USS John Paul Jones departed Naval Station San Diego for a Middle East deployment, as part of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Battle Group.

June 22, The John Paul Jones pulled into Apra Harbor, Guam, for a brief port call; Anchored off the coast of Dili, East Timor, for a two-day visit; Port call to Darwin, Australia, from July 2-3 and July 6-9; Moored at Changi Naval Base in Singapore from July 14-17.

July 19, USS John Paul Jones anchored off the coast of Phuket, Thailand, for a four-day liberty visit; Transited the Stait of Hormuz northbound on July 30; Port call to Manama, Bahrain, from Aug. 1-3.

August 3, Cmdr. David F. Steindl relieved Cmdr. Thomas F. Carney as commanding officer of the DDG 53.

August 27, The John Paul Jones moored at Mina Salman Pier in Manama for a three-day port visit.

From September 15- Nov. 1, the Jones was underway in the northern Arabia Sea in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and was one of the first ships that launched Tomahawk missiles on Taliban forces in Afghanistan, from Oct. 7-8.

November 3, The guided-missile destroyer arrived in Diego Garcia for a brief port call to refuel; Brief port visit to Darwin on Nov. 12.

November 16, USS John Paul Jones arrived in Cairns, Australia, for a three-day port visit; Port call to Pearl Harbor from Nov. 29- Dec. 1.

December 5, USS John Paul Jones returned to homeport after a six-month deployment in support of Operation Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom.

February 28, 2003 Cmdr. Roy I. Kitchener relieved Cmdr. David F. Steindl as the 7th CO of John Paul Jones.

May 9, The John Paul Jones departed Naval Base San Diego for a Friends and Family Day Cruise.

June ?, USS John Paul Jones arrived in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, for a scheduled port visit; Inport Seattle, Wash., for Fleet Week celebration from July 30- Aug. ?.

October 20, Cmdr. Charles R. Hill assumed command of the John Paul Jones during an exchange of command and crew ceremony at San Diego. Cmdr. Roy Kitchener and DDG 53 crew were airlifted recently to United Arab Emirates to relieve the crew aboard USS Higgins (DDG 76).

November 19, USS John Paul Jones comenced a four-month Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) at the Southwest Marine and Continental Maritime of San Diego shipyards.

December 12, Cmdr. Andrew F. Cully relieved Cmdr. Charles R. Hill as CO of the John Paul Jones during a change-of-command ceremony on board the ship.

April 12, 2004 The John Paul Jones departed for an 11-day underway period, off the coast of southern California, to conduct routine training; Underway for Group Sail from May 3-7; Underway for CART II from May 11-14; Underway for TSTA from June 7-10.

June 21, USS John Paul Jones departed Naval Base San Diego to participate in exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2004; Port call to Pearl Harbor from June 29- July 5.

July 23, The Jones pulled again into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a three-day port call; Returned home on Aug. 2.

August 20, The guided-missile destroyer departed homeport for a Friends and Family Day Cruise; Underway for TSTA from Sept. 13-15 and 24-30th.

October 4, USS John Paul Jones underway for a Trident Warrior experiment and to participate in San Francisco Fleet Week from Oct. 9-14; Underway again from Oct. 19-22 for FEP preparations and Oct. 25-28.

May 17, 2005 USS John Paul Jones arrived in Sasebo, Japan, for a routine port visit. The ship is scheduled to participate in exercise Talisman Sabre, a combined exercise between U.S. and Australian forces in the U.S. 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility.

October 11, DDG 53 departed Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, after a routine port visit. The Jones is currently assigned to the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Carrier Strike Group and will participate in ANNUALEX 2005, an annual exercise with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force.

December 2, Cmdr. James J. Housinger relieved Cmdr. Andrew F. Cully as the 10th commanding officer of JPJ.

June 8, 2006 USS John Paul Jones pulled into Portland, Oregon, to participate in Rose Festival's Fleet Week, an annual event in which ships from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian navy transit up the Columbia River to take part in the festival.

October 7, The John Paul Jones arrived in San Francisco, Calif., to participate in Fleet Week 2006.

December 10, USS John Paul Jones is currently underway for a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), off the coast of southern California, with the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Carrier Strike Group; Completed a Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) on March 2.

April 2, USS John Paul Jones departed San Diego for a scheduled deployment in support of the global war on terrorism.

June 10, The John Paul Jones departed Brisbane, Australia, to participate in exercise Talisman Sabre 2007.

July 22, Cmdr. Christopher K. Barnes relieved Cmdr. James J. Housinger as CO of the USS John Paul Jones during a change-of-command ceremony on board the ship in Apra Harbor, Guam.

August 14, DDG 53 concluded its participation in exercise Valiant Shield 2007, off the coast of Guam, during the joint photo exercise (PHOTOEX).

September 30, USS John Paul Jones returned to Naval Base San Diego after a six-month deployment in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility (AoR).

January 24, 2008 USS John Paul Jones departed homeport for a surge western Pacific deployment, as part of the USS Nimitz CSG.

February 28, The guided-missile destroyer pulled into Busan, Republic of Korea, for a scheduled port visit.

April 24, DDG 53 departed Apra Harbor, Guam, after a four-day port call.

May 3, The John Paul Jones arrived in Seward, Alaska, for a brief port call before participating in the two-week exercise Northern Edge.

June ?, USS John Paul Jones returned to Naval Base San Diego after a four-and-a-half month deployment.

November 7, Cmdr. Sam R. Hancock, Jr., relieved Cmdr. Christopher K. Barnes as commanding officer of the USS John Paul Jones during a ceremony at Naval Base San Diego.

November 24, 2009 USS John Paul Jones returned to San Diego after a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet AoR. The ship also made visited Manama, Bahrain; and Phuket, Thailand.

September 7, 2010 The guided-missile destroyer departed dry-dock after an 11-week period. USS John Paul Jones was the first Arleigh Burke-class destroyer to undergo modernization at BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair facility, receiving the hull mechanical & electrical portions of the upgrade.

March 4, 2011 The John Paul Jones concluded sea trials, marking the completion of the first phase of the DDG Modernization (DDG MOD) upgrade.

March 25, USS John Paul Jones returned home after a two-week underway period for routine training in preparation for a deployment later this year, which will be followed by the Combat Systems portion of DDG MOD beginning in the summer of 2012.

April 15, DDG 53 departed Naval Base San Diego for a Friends and Family Day Cruise.

June 10, USS John Paul Jones anchored off the coast of Malibu, California, to celebrate "Navy Days". This is a first ever port call by U.S. Navy warship to this city.

August 12, The guided-missile destroyer returned to San Diego after a week underway period for routine training, three days filming for the movie Battleship and ammunition onload at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach.

September 19, The John Paul Jones departed homeport for a two-week certifications.

November 29, USS John Paul Jones departed Naval Base San Diego for an independent deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility with a primary focus on Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD).

December 5, DDG 53 arrived in Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for a brief port call; Inport Apra Harbor, Guam, in Mid-December.

December 27, USS John Paul Jones anchored off the coast of Phuket for a four-day liberty visit to Thailand.

January 9, 2012 The guided-missile destroyer recently pulled into Manama, Bahrain, for a week-long port call.

March 1, Cmdr. Jonathan C. Duffy relieved Cmdr. Christopher A. Cegielski as CO of DDG 53 during a change-of-command ceremony on board the ship.

March 8, USS John Paul Jones recently departed Jebel Ali, U.A.E., after a week-long visit to Dubai.

March 15, USS John Paul Jones, along with U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Baranof (WPB 1318), rescued 24 Filipino mariners from the Liberian-flagged chemical tanker M/V Stolt Valorin, that was caught on fire, approximately 50 miles southeast of Farsi Island, Iran. The destroyer is currently assigned to Combined Task Force (CTF) 152.

May 17, The John Paul Jones pulled into Khalifa Bin Salman Port at Hidd, Bahrain, for a three-day port call.

June 7, The guided-missile destroyer pulled into Hong Kong for a four-day port visit.

July 3, USS John Paul Jones returned to San Diego after a seven-month deployment.

September 12, DDG 53 entered the BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair facility for a 12-month Extended Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (E-DSRA).

June 21, 2013 Cmdr. Andrew J. Thomson relieved Cmdr. Jonathan C. Duffy as commanding officer of the John Paul Jones during a pierside ceremony at Naval Base San Diego.

July 19, USS John Paul Jones completed the second of three combat systems testing and sea trials, in support of the first-ever integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) destroyer Aegis Baseline 9C combat systems upgrade. Underway again on Sept. 9; Underway for routine training from Sept. 25-26; Underway for CSSQT in early February 2014.

May 29, The John Paul Jones departed homeport for a day-long Career Orientation Training for Midshipmen (CORTRAMID) Cruise.

From June 18-20, USS John Paul Jones successfully conducted a series of five live-fire tests, off the coast of southern California, for the Baseline 9C Aegis Combat System during Combat Systems Ship's Qualification Trials (CSSQT) and Naval Integrated Fire Control Counter Air (NIFC-CA) capability.

June 27, Cmdr. James L. Storm relieved Capt. Thomas P. Shaw as Commander, Afloat Training Group San Diego, during a change-of-command ceremony on board the John Paul Jones at Naval Base San Diego.

August 15, USS John Paul Jones arrived in its new homeport of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, after a nine-day transit from San Diego, Calif.

October 16, The John Paul Jones, positioned west of Hawaii, successfully detected and tracked the medium-range ballistic missile target, launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) Barking Sands at approximately 9:08 p.m. HST. No SM-3 missiles were launched during the Flight Test Other (FTX) 20.

November 6, USS John Paul Jones fired and guided an SM-3 Block IB missile that successfully intercepted a short-range ballistic missile, fired from the PMRF Barking Sands at 12.03 p.m. local time. The ship also launched two SM-2 Block IIIA guided missiles to successfully engage two low-flying cruise missile targets. Flight Test Missile (FTM) 25 marks the 29th successful intercept in 35 flight test attempts for the Aegis BMD program since flight testing began in 2002.

November 12, DDG 53 departed Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in support of national tasking; Moored at Wharf B22 on Nov. 16; Underway again on Nov. 2?.

December 12, The John Paul Jones returned to homeport after underway for routine training in the Hawaiian Op. Area.

December 17, Cmdr. Matthew H. Hall relieved Cmdr. Andrew J. Thomson as the 16th CO of USS John Paul Jones.

July 27, 2015 USS John Paul Jones departed Pearl Harbor in support of national tasking west of Hawaii; Participated in four flight test events using the SM-6 Dual I and SM-2 Block IV missiles, on July 28, 29, 31st and Aug. 1; Returned home on Aug. 2.

November 1, The John Paul Jones fired and guided an SM-3 Block IB missile that failed to intercept an extended medium-range ballistic missile, launched by a U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft southeast of Wake Island, as part of Flight Test Operational (FTO) 02 Event 2a.

December 10, USS John Paul Jones is currently moored at Pier B18 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

January 15, 2016 The John Paul Jones is currently assisting in a search and rescue efforts for two CH-53E Super Stallions, assigned to the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 463, that collided mid-air with 12 people on board just before midnight, about 2 miles off Haleiwa, Oahu, on Thursday.

January 18, USS John Paul Jones fired and guided the Navy’s new anti-surface warfare (ASUW) variant of Standard Missile 6 (SM-6), that hit and sink the ex-USS Reuben James (FFG 57), during the operational test at the PMRF Barking Sands.

March 26, The guided-missile destroyer is currently moored at Bravo 17 Pier in Pearl Harbor.

April 21, Cmdr. Scott A. Rosetti relieved Cmdr. Matthew H. Hall as commanding officer of the John Paul Jones.

May 17, USS John Paul Jones, positioned west of Hawaii, successfully detected and tracked the medium-range ballistic missile target, launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) Barking Sands at approximately 9:02 p.m. HST. No missiles were launched during the Flight Test Other (FTX) 21.

May 30, The John Paul Jones is currently moored at Wharf B24 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

June 24, USS John Paul Jones recently departed Pearl Harbor to participate in a trilateral ballistic missile defense (BMD) exercise Pacific Dragon, with the USS Shoup (DDG 86), JS Chokai (DDG 176), ROKS Sejong The Great (DDG 991) and ROKS Kang Gam Chan (DDH 979), off the coast of Kauai; Moored at Pier B17 on June 30.

October 11, DDG 53 is currently moored at Pier B15 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

December 2, The John Paul Jones recently moored at Wharf B25 after underway for routine training in the Hawaiian Op. Area; Underway again on Dec. 9.?

December 14, USS John Paul Jones, positioned west of Hawaii, successfully fired a salvo of two SM-6 Dual I missiles against a complex medium-range ballistic missile target, demonstrating the Sea Based Terminal endo-atmospheric defensive capability; Moored at Pier M3 on Dec. 1?.

January 20, 2017 The John Paul Jones moored at Wharf W4, Naval Magazine Lualualei for a brief stop to onload ammo before underway in the Hawaiian Op. Area; Moored at Pier M2 on Jan. 2?.

February 3, The John Paul Jones fired and guided an SM-3 Block IIA missile that successfully intercepted a medium-range ballistic missile, fired from the PMRF Barking Sands at 10.30 p.m. local time. SFTM-01 was the third flight test of the Block IIA missile and the first intercept test; Moored at Pier M3 on Feb. 5.

March 16, USS John Paul Jones moored at Pier B13 after a three-day underway in support of the flight test Vigilant Hunter; Moved to Wharf B22 on March 22; Underway again on April 4; Moored at Wharf B23 on April 14; Moved to Pier B17 on May 19; Moored at Wharf W4, Naval Magazine Lualualei for a brief stop to onload ammo on May 23; Underway again on June 16.

June 21, The John Paul Jones fired and guided an SM-3 Block IIA missile that failed to intercept a medium-range ballistic missile, fired from the PMRF Barking Sands at approximately 7:20 p.m., HST, as part of Flight Test Standard Missile (SFTM) 02; Moored at Pier B17 on June 21.

August 17, USS John Paul Jones moored at Wharf W4, Naval Magazine Lualualei for ammo onload; Moored at Wharf B23 on Aug. 18; Underway again on Aug. 24.
