University of Melbourne ranked 37 in world by Times Higher Education

High scores in four new indicators have driven the University of Melbourne’s performance in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings released today.

The University of Melbourne has been ranked 37 in the world by THE and remains the highest ranked Australian university across the three major global rankings – Quacquarelli Symonds (14), Academic Ranking of World Universities (35) and THE.

The University scored over 99 in three of the four new indicators introduced this year – Research Excellence, Research Influence, and Patents – and nearly 90 in a fourth new indicator, Research Strength. These gains were offset by a change in the methodology for the calculation of scores for the reputation indicators, which has had an impact on the rankings of several Australian universities.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell said the University’s standing as one of the world’s leading research universities has been enhanced by the THE rankings.

“The University of Melbourne’s exceedingly high scores in all of the research-related indicators reflects the outstanding work of the staff at the University and its affiliated institutions,” Professor Maskell said.

“Our staff’s pursuit of research excellence is why the University of Melbourne continues to be recognised as one of the world’s finest research universities.”

Professor Maskell said it’s important to acknowledge the different approaches to rankings and how they’re measured.

“There are many surveys that are released during the year that rely on different methods to determine university rankings,” he said.

“Changes to these methods which often increase or reduce the weighting applied to specific indicators can have a positive or negative effect on rankings.”
