Master of Science "Environmental Management" as double-degree

In order to facilitate international and interdisciplinary studies, the Kiel School of Sustainability at Kiel University offers the MSc. "Environmental Management" as a double-degree in cooperation with the Irkutsk State University, Irkutsk, Russia.

About the programmeBaikal1

The management of natural resources is increasingly under impact of global processes and is in need of efficient and sustainable concepts.

Therefore, the development and the study of potential management concepts and the development and the study of transferable evaluation systems for such management concepts have become global tasks. Consequently, international cooperations, especially in the educational sector, are crucial to tackle this task.

The Christian-Albrechts-University (CAU) in Kiel and the Irkutsk State University (ISU) in Irkutsk have decided to join forces and to offer a double-degree in the MSc. programme "Environmental Management" from the winter term 2012/13 on. During their exchange semester, students will gain wide knowledge on natural diversity and expertise and experience in a variety of state-of-the-art methods.

Within the study programme design, students at the CAU have the possibility to focus their studies on “Ecological Modelling”. Students of the ISU have the chance to focus on ”Integrated Management of Natural Resources” at the CAU. All study content is provided in English language. The master thesis can be conducted either at the CAU or the ISU.

The programme design allows students as well as lecturers of both institutions to closely cooperate in teaching and practical courses. This facilitates professional and methodological synergetic effects:

  • Mathematical methods and development of analytic models is traditionally a major emphasis at the Russian partner university in Irkutsk, for which it is nationally and internationally renowned.
  • At the CAU students are offered several key competences, which enable them to handle complex, interdisciplinary problems on a regional, national, and international scale, both within the economic sector and public authorities.

 

In 1990 the ISU and the CAU started their cooperation, which has been intensified in the field of landscape ecology and limnology in 2004. Since 2005 a regular exchange between students as well as lecturers takes place. Since 2007 an alternating summer school is conducted in Irkutsk and Kiel, respectively.

Structure of the programme

Within the double-degree programme MSc. "Environmental Management" students have the possibility to study both at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany and at the Irkutsk State University in Russia, in order to gain the MSc. in "Environmental Management". In every term, modules are offered at the universities in Kiel and Irkutsk similarly organised concerning topics and content. The modules offered cover the basic knowledge and concepts of general natural sciences, the communicative and cognitive skills required in today’s world of sciences, environmental impact assessment (EIA), theory of random processes in ecology and nature management, basics in methods for environmental assessment (e.g., GIS, modelling), sustainable development, economics and nature management together with methods of managing different ecosystems.

About Irkutsk

Irkutsk (Russian: Иркутск; IPA: [ɪrˈkutsk]), founded in 1661, is one of the largest cities in Siberia and the administrative center of Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. It is situated at the river banks of Angara River, which forms the single outflow of Lake Baikal 72 km north-east of the city.
Irkutsk is a lively university city with roughly 590.000 inhabitants (14th of October 2010). Located at a historic route between Russia and China, Irkutsk is referred to as the "Gate to the Far East". The Irkutsk Railway Station links the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway with the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Manchurian Railway and thus offers a direct connection to Moscow, Beijing and Vladivostok.
With the increasing trading activities in the 18th century, Irkutsk became a hot spot for science and culture. Here, the first expeditions of Vitus Bering started in 1728, and several theatres, museums, and universities are evidence for Irkutsk's cultural activities.
Yet, compared to cities like Novosibirsk and Ulan-Ude, Irkutsk could keep its natural charm, with old-grown urban-quarters, winding alleys, and squares.
 

 

About Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal (Russian: о́зеро Байка́л, tr. Ozero Baykal; IPA: [ˈozʲɪrə bɐjˈkal]; Buryat: Байгал нуур, Mongolian: Байгал нуур, Baygal nuur, meaning "nature lake"; Kyrgyz: Байкол, meaning "rich lake") is the oldest lake (about 25 million years), deepest (averaging 744.4 m) and the clearest of all lakes in the world.
It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Located in the south of the Russian region of Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast, it is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water.
The lake harbours a vast diversity of species, many of which are endemic (e.g., the Baikal Seal, the Omul). At Lake Baikal, the Russian Taiga meets the Mongolian Steppes and arid zones. The area has a very diverse culture with Buryats and Russian culture groups meeting at the shores of Lake Baikal.
