Joseph Cataldo (1837–1928), an Italian-American who arrived in the Pacific Northwest in 1865 as a Jesuit missionary to the Native Americans, founded Gonzaga University in 1887. To serve the children of the Upper Spokane Indians, Cataldo constructed a schoolhouse in 1880 on the Peone Prairie, around 10 to 12 miles (16 to 19 km) northeast of Spokane.
Concerned about the impact and growth of Protestant education on the local aboriginal people, Cataldo started chatting with other Jesuit officials in 1881 about the potential of founding a Jesuit college.
