Members were sworn into office on January 3, 2021
After winning their elections and weeks of preparation, Members-elect were sworn in as Members of the U.S. House of Representatives after the 117th Congress was gaveled into session at noon on Sunday, January 3, 2021.
Representative Nancy Pelosi (CA-12) was re-elected Speaker and will preside over the chamber for the next two years. Representative Steny Hoyer (MD-5) was elected Majority Leader, and Representative Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) was elected Minority Leader.
“As Speaker of the House, it is my great honor to preside over this sacred ritual of renewal, as we gather under the dome of this temple of democracy to begin the 117th Congress,” Speaker Pelosi told the chamber. “In all that we do, let us be for the people – recognizing the beautiful diversity of America, so that no one is left out and no one is left behind.”
Speaker Pelosi also remarked on the historic nature of the 117th Congress: “It gives me great pride to serve as Speaker of the most diverse House in the history of our country – with a record-shattering 122 women,” she noted, after the 116th Congress set the last record with the largest number of female Members.
After she concluded, Speaker Pelosi then swore in the rest of the lawmakers, including 59 new freshman Members.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the first day of the 117th Congress was modified to accommodate guidelines from the Office of Attending Physician, such as social distancing, reducing the number of guests and staff allowed in the chamber, and mask wearing.
