The Undertaker used to be a top contender for being a fan favorite of the Black Butler series, sometimes even overshadowing the #1 fan favorite Sebastian Michaelis. However, with the passage of time and with more and more being revealed about Undertaker’s past and his deplorable actions, he’s found fewer and fewer fans.

Manga fans know more about him than anime fans, obviously because the anime has yet to cover many manga chapters. Needless to say, this article will explore hidden details about the character, and will have multiple anime and manga spoilers as well.

11 He Used To Be A Grim Reaper

In the beginning, Undertaker was simply used as comic relief and fans would only get minuscule details as to how well connected he is. However, all of this changed when the Book of Atlantic movie aired, which showed that he actually used to be a grim reaper and the most powerful one at that.

No one knows why he left, but it’s often been theorized it has something to do with his mysterious connection with the Phantomhives.

9 His Disregard For Ciel’s Well Being

Throughout the manga, it can be seen that as a result of the Undertaker’s selfish actions, Ciel and his servants have consistently faced danger. In fact, if it weren’t for Sebastian, Ciel would have been dead multiple times over.

All of this was done deliberately by the Undertaker, where he once even confessed to putting Ciel in harm’s way because he knew Sebastian would always save him.

8 His Relationship With The Phantomhives

Both the anime and the manga have clearly established that the Undertaker’s relationship with the Phantomhives goes way beyond his relationship with Vincent, Ciel’s father.

In fact, the manga has teased that he knows a lot more about the Phantomhive family than he is letting on. This is quite selfish, considering how Ciel is always looking for answers about his family, his lineage and how all of that is connected to the night his manor and his family were burnt down.

7 He Deleted Cinematic Records

One of the many duties of a grim reaper is to collect and go through every dead soul’s cinematic records, aka all their life’s actions and details. This duty is sacred as it is these records that decide whether a person will go to heaven or hell.

However, to Undertaker these are nothing but a joke and he’s shown to have altered and even completely deleted people’s cinematic records, just for the sake of it.

6 He Doesn’t Mind Experimenting On Kids

In the manga, Undertaker is shown to be the principal of a school where young boys have consistently disappeared. It is later on revealed that the Undertaker colluded with some of the students of the school and made them kidnap children so that he could later on experiment on them.

5 He Reanimates Ciel’s Twin

In one of the most shocking revelations of the manga, it was revealed that not only did Ciel have a twin who died during the night of the fire, but the Undertaker managed to revive him from the dead.

It is then that the readers of the manga realize that his experiments with the school children and the bizarre dolls were nothing but a summation of his final experiment – to reanimate a Phantomhive.

4 Agni Is Dead Because Of Him

This is again one of those incidents where the Undertaker is not directly responsible. However, it is heavily implied in the manga that Ciel’s twin was the one who killed Agni, seeing as to how Soma slapped Ciel immediately when he was unlocked from his room (he assumed Ciel was the evil twin Ciel).

3 He Does Nothing To Stop The Evil Twin

One would think that for all the times the Undertaker had talked about having a relationship with the Phantomhives and how he feared losing “another one”, the one that he would bring back from the dead would be a model Phantomhive.

But this was far from the truth. Not only did the twin kill Agni, he accused Ciel publicly of being an impostor and banished him from his manor, along with his servants. The Undertaker does nothing but look smug in the background while all of this happened.

2 He Is Stronger Than Sebastian

On multiple occasions, such as in the Public School Arc, the Undertaker has always been shown to be ahead of whatever it is that the master-butler duo have been planning. Sebastian himself says in a frustrating monologue that the principle of the school (who he doesn’t know yet is the Undertaker) is always one step ahead of him, no matter what he does.

This would also explain why the duo never managed to catch him, even when he was caught red-handed by them.

1 He Created The Bizzare Dolls

Well, he didn’t create them himself, but he was definitely the one who orchestrated for their existence to take place. This fact is revealed in the movie, where Ciel and Sebastian are trying to find out what certain mysterious cult members are doing onboard a Luxury Liner ship

In the chaos that ensued when the undead ravaged the living on the ship, the Undertaker confessed to having been responsible for them from the get-go.
